40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch

That's right, the GH1's MJPEG encoder produces 30fps videos, regardless of whether you select NTSC or PAL modes.

thanks . the footages are looking much much better after hacking ..even when i used slow ultra 2 sd card. but i already order now sandisk 30mbits speed card . thx lpowell

Try Lpowell's settings with Native 24p checked with the Overall Bitrate set to 86000000. You'll need a class 10 card though because this results in a write rate of almost 14MBs, I haven't had time to test other cards yet. I'm sure others will do some testing too.

Chris

My results using these settings have been reliable on my usual windy foliage torture test. No crashes yet. I'm using Sandisk 32gig 30MB/s class 10 cards. I always shoot at 1/50 shutter. I'm starting a major documentary with the GH-13 (at least until I can get my hands on the AF-100) so I've been following this thread closely. I very much want to shoot native 24p at a maximum reliable bit rate and these settings seem to produce the best results yet. I've determined to run all my footage through the time sucking 5DtoRGB software for maximum image performance. It fixes the weird upper field issue with the GH1 native 24p setting and also assures that the file is 23.976 and not 23.971. I can't risk failing a broadcast spec test so I'm not taking any chances with oddball file formats. That has been my main concern about the native 24p patch but 5DtoRGB fixes that. The image quality is absolutely outstanding. No moire. No aliasing that I can see. Beautiful! I think this is a good route for a cinematic look. My work is pretty composed, compressed DOF, not wide angle run and gun, so if it crashes once in a while on B-roll that's ok. Look forward to hearing the results of others.

Hey Raster-Is that just the BETA version you are using, or is there a package for sale?

If you prefer, you can delve into the individual patches in the PTool INI file I've provided and alter any of them to suit your needs. Regardless of which combination of patches you use, the GH1 should report its patched version number as 0.0.

The Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch INI file sets Version Increment to one, along with the Prevent Version Compare patch. This combination of patches allows you to revert back to the original Panasonic firmware and reinstall the patch any time you like.

You can download the Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch INI file here:

Unable to access the download to your patch:( It keeps asking for my log in info, don't have enough privileges to access it? Any other way to download it? Thanks.

im a bit confused . analyzing avhd footage in adobe premier in the properties panel i have 1. 6 MB/ sec for original version clip. And for version 0.0 even less: average data rate 1.2 MB/sec . 1 MB = 8mbits right? but in fact video for 0.0 version looks better . what i missed ?

Finally, it worked today, I was able to download the patch... so testing Lpowell's patch tomorrow:)

Same problem while using one of the 3.40d versions of ptool, now using 3.50 version and it seems to be working... testing more tomorrow with lpowell settings.

im not sure that i used some wrong version of ptool. if u notice pal is available ... so i think the patch has work. i heard story about using old version of ptool but one i used it was downloaded from this link http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=2039780&postcount=5

Tested mpeg lpowell in lowlight

Tested mpeg lpowell in lowlight

Ran a quick test on lpowell settings...
It was night time so I used mpeg (better than AVC in lowlight supposedly)
GH1 not hacked reads 20.6Mbps on Mediainfo, GH13 reads 30.0Mbps on Mediainfo.
Much less banding with lpowell settings than on non-hacked GH1.
I used the 20mm 1.7, f2.2 iso 200 1/60. The only problem is that in France we have 50hertz so I'm getting a bit of flickering so I guess I'll have to go with 1/100 next time.

Will run more test later with AVC and mpeg and will provide screen shots.

So far so good... THANK YOU LPOWELL! And of course TESTER13!

here is the clip. it will be very helpful for me if somebody will download and analyze the footage. download original link ( 18 mb ) http://dl.transfer.ro/transfer_ro-02oct-60c60ab1cab7f4.zip . the issues is low average rate for avhd . about 1 mb . checked with adobe premiere . mjpeg works fine at 32mbits. ( anyway even that happens with avchd .. the footage looks better with this patch vs original 1.2 fabric version..anyway is strange cos i did everything by the book, ptool and patch loaded from here http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=2039780&postcount=5 )

Any ideas how to tweak the patch setting to allow for reliable spanning across 4gb files under all circumstances? I did some testing and the recording stops if I'm focused on a printed high res test pattern when the camera attempts to span from one 4gb file to the next file. If the scene is not high res the spanning works just fine. I'm using a 16GB SanDisk VideoHD class 6 card. Could the card be the problem?

AVCHD file-spanning beyond 4GB has always been rather fragile and difficult to test thoroughly for reliability. I've seen it fail both at high bitrates and at low bitrates with a tripod-mounted camera focused on static scenery.

For recording long-duration 720p60 videos, The Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch provides a 24Mbps bitrate setting when you select the "H" mode (instead of SH). Unfortunately, the camera doesn't provide a way to select a lower bitrate for 1080p24 videos.

A question that's come up recently is whether the GOP-length of the 720p60 AVCHD mode in the Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch can be made any shorter. The standard 30-frame GOP in 720p60 mode records one key frame every half of a second. In my 50Mbps AVCHD Fast Action Patch, I was able to reduce its 720p30 AVCHD mode to a 3-frame GOP, with a key frame every tenth of a second.

Unfortunately, there's a reliability issue with short GOP-lengths in the AVCHD encoder. Under extremely dim illumination, video bitrate can fall below 5Mbps. If this condition persists for longer than about 7 seconds, the AVCHD encoder may terminate the recording, leaving a zero-length file. This malfunction can occur with any AVCHD patch that uses a reduced GOP-length, and the only way to guard against it is to make sure your subject is adequately lit at all times.

Since the Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch uses the standard 30-frame GOP in 720p60 mode, it is not afflicted with this problem, and will record without failure at any level of illumination.
