40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch

Each version has build date now in caption.
So it is easy to identify specific version.

I DID NOT WRITE THE ABOVE MESSAGE. Vitaliy Kiselev deleted my original message and arbitrarily edited it without my consent.

I am seriously alarmed that you see fit to insert your own opinions into my post without any attempt to communicate with me in advance. In the future, is it asking too much to expect you confine your comments to your own messages?

BTW, you may find some helpful procedures in the following article:

Vitaliy, it's better to just post a response then to change the words and content of user posts. That's the standard protocol for the rest of the site and should be followed here.

Sorry I did it by error.
If you look at text it is clear that this is just meant to be my reply.
Without any prior intent (see the part of original message in quote).
Look at the Modify and Quote buttons. Slight mouse move and you get exact same edit screen as in quite case.
Sorry again.

Major Problems after loading j settings ini

Major Problems after loading j settings ini

I had major problems after loading the "J settings" file with p-Tools 3.40d.

My GH1 displayed a number of weird behaviors including refusing to capture any video at all and refusing to turn off.

I had previously tried two hacks (minor change B settings and then exciting but unstable C settings), so not sure what went wrong, as the J setting should have been more stable.

My GH1 has been returned to original 1.32 firmware, so not a catastrophe...just trying to sort out what happened and get back to a setting that works.

Thanks and please advise...

As I attempted to explain earlier, the number "3.40d" does not indicate that you have the latest version of PTool. There were numerous versions of PTool released with this number that are now obsolete and they will not work properly with this patch.

The only reliable form of version control in this case is to download the latest version of PTool before installing the patch, using the following link:

They are suggested settings from the PTool program. You see them when you click on or hover over certain settings.

Hi
What do the Bitrate Preset changes do, i have not changed these before?
Cheers
Paul
Current using stable 38 | 40 | 42

i think ipowell patch settings sounds good for me . but i didn't proceed yet.

i did not open Ptool yet, i have only macs, so i cannot see the settings and make an correlation. so far i found this : ipowell settings sims closer than perfect : no 24p- not stable- camera could freeze , , all the bitrate ranges and settings i'll find here posted in attached files http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.p...80&postcount=5 Right ?

also i need some answers before i go to the next step , the main one :) no need full hd - coz gf1 sensor, image will be scaled to 1080i. 1920 per 1080 its checked in this patch settings ? if yes it's works if i simply unchecked ?

Got everything working in Winebottler now.
So all set to load these settings into my camera.
Just checking one thing....
In the lpowell j settings no box is ticked in the AVCHD Movie settings except AVCHD Compression. Same with MJPEG settings. No tick in FPS or Size Adjustments boxes?
Right?

ok. i found ptool winned for mac. i've place in the same folder ipowell setl.ini settings .. then i load the settings on J buton... the buton become green. anyway i dont figured out how its works.. i mean all the boxes are unchecked. i suppose that sooner i'll load the settings on J some boxes will be checked automatically , but they aren't .

As I found out, you need to use the latest version of Ptool. Then you load the official Panasonic firmware into Ptool. Then you click once on the J button and a dialog box should tell you it's loaded the j settings from lpowell.
On my computer there are checked boxes, just not all the ones I expected.
Waiting for confirmation before installing on camera.

ok, thank you. i think i used the latest version. PTool_Wined_app.zip on top i saw write `ptool v3.40d i think is last one . for double check can you show me the link where i can find the latest version for mac .

( ps like i ve said i've clicked on j button and nothing happened with the boxes.. but in a dialog boxes appears Load Settings.. not even an word about ipowel settings. so that's way i ve tried the second option shift+ click.. and the j button it was colored in green .. the settings is save.. but im not sure what that mean exactly.. and i cannot undo this now.. even after i've removed from my computer the setj.ini ( ipowel settings placed besides the Ptool app. )

ok thank you . it works .. not fine but it works.. i run ptool.exe directly coz it failed to be saved for mac trough winebottler, took to much time to complete this action. then i manage to open the application and load ipowell settings.. and it seems to be okay . but less that i didn't found the settings for resolution size=> up to 1980... i dont need that anyway but i want to be sure about it. i want the res to be unchanged in the end and remain 1280 x 720p .

Doco shoot done with this patch

Doco shoot done with this patch

Well finally, today I shot something that will hopefully be helpful to the cause. I installed the AVCHD High Reliability patch (along with the suggested MJPEG settings) and took the camera out on a doco shoot for a project one of my filmmaker friends is doing. First off, everything worked fine, no problems, no freezing, just like it's supposed to.

Shot this at an ISO of 200 in a mixed lighting environment with a manual WB of 5200k. We just used the bar practicals, the light from the front windows and a Chimera as a "natural" wash for the talent. The shoot involved a DVX 100a, an HVX200 and my GH13 (used as the wide shot). Shot using the SH settings to better match the SD footage. I'm going under the assumption that the patch works in the SH setting (or I'm going to feel pretty dumb!).

I used a Tamron 17-50 2.8 with a screw type Nikon adapter, so I can't give an exact exposure, but it was relatively open. On import I used ProRes LT in FCP. I normally do my shooting with an EX1 (great all around camera) and I know where I can push it in post. Part of what I wanted to accomplish here was to see how well the image would hold up to color correction, which I normally do on my projects.

My finding was that it did pretty well, but you don't want to go too crazy or the image starts falling apart (especially when crushing blacks). I notice this mostly in darker gradients. Before you jump on that statement, I know I need to do a lot more testing with different settings in acquisition and import, this is just an initial impression. More to come as I take it out in the real world.

So anyway, here are three images from screen grabs, first is the original, the second is with mild CC using the 3-Way CC in FCP and the third is with CC and the addition of Magic Bullet Looks (Edge Noise Soften preset). Overall, I'm very pleased with the settings (Thanks LPowell!) and the camera so far. I'm going to stay with these settings for awhile and take them out on my shoots so I can give additional feedback on how this will work on actual gigs. I know we all need to feel confident when were out there (especially on paid jobs).

Hope this helps give those who are thinking of using this patch a sense of what's possible.
