40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch

I've actually had 24p NTSC be completely stable. With this patch and 24p, I haven't had a failure since I installed this patch.

Yes 24p, but I am talking about 24pN, LPowell's J settings but with the Native wrapper tickbox checked. It can lock up, and will on high bitrate (deep focus) locked off (still) scenes.

Yeah, I meant 24p Native. I haven't gotten it to lock up on deep DOF high-detail shots yet.

I have had very good results with one of my 24p settings and have used it for several broadcast pieces in the last 5 months.

I also have this patch with native 24p and have shot several broadcast pieces with it. Good stuff!

That good to here CColton.
The 24p is not perfect as it resolves at an odd 23.971 as opposed to 23.976 but it seems to import into Avid and AE fine. I have notice that my onboard sound would be offset by -1 frame, most of my clips are short lengths so its not to hard to match in post and we do film with dual sound whenever possible. Sure wonder if some of the high detail freezing problems are related to the odd framerate amongst other things. I'm currently experimenting with a 60 Mbps, 2 GOP, 24 fps 1080P patch which has been holding up pretty good so far.

Ok I'm pretty stupid with the hack instructions. I'm trying to upload the 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch. I downloaded the version of Ptools off the thread and also the lpowell-Reliable in-camera playback patch.zip file. I unzipped them in the same directory and in Ptools I loaded in the GH1__132.bin. After that I didn't know how the file is to be installed. Could anyone direct me to the proper way to load this file? Also can you see the changes within Ptools? Thx

hey voss4330

1. Download the zip file (setj.ini) for the 40Mbps patch and place it into the same folder as the Ptool.exe.

2. Open Ptool, click load firmware and select the GH1__132.bin file, Ptool has now loaded the 132.bin file.

3. Here is where you can either enter manual settings or in this case select a preset patch file from the A-J icons at the bottom.

4. The 40Mbps patch you downloaded (setj.ini) and placed in the Ptool folder should be selectable on the J icon, it should be green.

5. Once clicked it will automatically enter the desired values into the fields within the expandable menus, have a look within the settings but don't edit anything.

6. Then click save firmware and enter GH1__133.bin (be sure to increase 132 to 133 to keep the original, each time you hack or apply a new patch you always work from the GH1__132.bin file so keep it safe!

7. Format your SD card from within the camera then remove from camera and pop it into your computer, copy paste the GH1__133.bin you just created onto the SD card, place it next to the DCIM, MICS & PRIVATE folders (not within them)

8. Eject the SD card from the computer and put it back into the camera (PLACE THE CAMERA ON THE DESK, DONT HOLD IT!) and power on, when the playback button is pressed the camera reads the SD card and will find the GH1__133.bin file, it will ask if you would like to install new firmware, select yes! a green progress bar will appear and will take around 1-2 mins to complete (IF ANY BUTTONS ON THE CAMERA ARE PRESSED WHILE THE GREEN PROGRESS BAR IS PROGRESSING YOU MAY BREAK YOUR CAMERA SO I SUGGEST PLACE IT SOMEWHERE STURDY AND DO NOT TOUCH IT UNTIL ITS COMPLETE) once complete the camera goes back to normal function... turn off the camera.

9. Turn the camera back on, go into the menus and select format to erase the hacked firmware from the SD card as it is now in the camera.

10. Locate version display within the menus and the cameras body firmware should now read ver.0.0 (if so it has been successful)

BEFORE YOU HACK THE GH1 BE SURE TO CHARGE THE BATTERY FULLY, IT WILL ONLY LET YOU HACK ON A FULL BATTERY.

BEFORE YOU HACK CREATE A FOLDER WHERE YOU WILL STORE THE ORIGINAL GH1__132.bin FILE AND INCREMENTS OF THIS FILE.
MY FOLDER LOOKS LIKE THIS...
GH1__132.bin (original file i work from each time)
GH1__133.bin (1st time you hack)
GH1__134.bin (2nd time you hack)
GH1__135.bin (3rd time you hack)
GH1__136.bin... AND SO ON.

I keep a manual record of what hack is associated to what .bin file for future reverting.

THANKS Terra1, WOW!, that made it crystal clear. The hack went in without a hitch.

How does one know what settings will render 1080i or 720p? With my EX3, I shoot 1080/60i, it would make it easier to get the same out of the GH1 and GH2. Adobe will allow all types of formats on the time line, just would like it to be the same if possible.

Thanks again.

Dan

no probs voss4330 glad the hack went on smoothly

AVCHD FHD is 1080 - 24fps (ntsc)/ 25fps (pal)
AVCHD SH is 720 - 60fps (ntsc)/ 50fps(pal)
MJPEG is 720 - 30fps (ntsc & pal)

with any footage imported into CS5 a good trick is to right click the footage in the project window and select interpret footage... can be confirmed to a new frame rate, great for true slow motion with the 720 60/50 fps footage, ie: 60/50fps... interpret footage... confirm to 24/25fps... drop on a 24/25fps timeline gives you true over cranked slow motion.

not sure if thats what your asking tho.

as this thread is for the 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch we better not wander off topic any more, feel free to post in the workflow section tho so we can keep this a dedicated 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch thread pure as possible for future reference.

terra1 thanks for the easy to follow instructions for downloading the patch. I've been through a ton of threads and just bought a GH1 with the thought of hacking it and your explanation as voss4330 said is "crystal clear", so many thanks!

Also many thanks Vitaly and lpowell for their hard work and success!

how do you guys preload A or B or C settings? I pressed "j" for preload in ptool 3.510 but i cannot see options for A B or C??

i guess it;s the new 1 2 and 3???

btw..ticking the 24p wrapper option...will it kill the reliability of this patch?

Hey everyone, I am having problems with avchd on my gh13. I recently hacked the camera and could not get the avchd bitrate to go any higher than the standard 17mbps. The mjpeg works great and I have been achieving up to 62mbps! But for some reason the hack does not work for avchd!?! I have never heard of it just not working like that. It is getting kind of frustrating! I have tried several variations but it never works. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

So far, any and all settings with the GH1 have been unreliable with 24p Native (wrapper removed); along with 25p Native.

However, lpowell is currently taking a look at forum member Blackout's settings. Blackout has reported a high level of stability with 24pN; not 100% reliable but very close.

Let's hope something good comes out of the collaboration.

I've had good results with this high-reliability patch AND 24p native. I have tried to break it many times but have seldom succeeded.

That sounds great. The airport clip from Blackout is really amazingly clean and detailed. I look forward to such a patch.

Hi there,

right now, I am using the 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch.

I tried to use it in combination with the 24/25p feature. So I used the PTool to load LPowell´s patch. Than I checked the 24/25p Box and installed the firmware on my GH1.

But the camera is still producing the 50/60i wrappers ( at least the vlc players shows framerates of nearly 50 and 60 fps at a resolution of 1920x1080 ). So am I missing something ? Isn´t it possible to combine LPowell´s patch an the 24/25p feature or do I have to change more settings with the PTool ?

Thanks a lot and greetings,

Tasnal

40 Mbps patch not working with water shots

40 Mbps patch not working with water shots

I have had recent success with most of my shots using the 40Mbps patch, but I ran across an issue shooting water scenes. The example shows what I'm talking about.

I'm using a class 10, 16 GB Transcend SD card. The interesting thing is I've use it with surfing shots and had no problem. e.g.

I'm thinking the direct reflection in a closer shot is the problem. Maybe too much information to process? Then again I have both close-up surfing shots and wide angle snorkeling shots and the surfing ones are fine but the snorkeling ones are not. I'm using a ND fader for both shots. Using the 14-140 and the 20mm Lumix lenses. 720P 60fps.

Any thoughts/insight would be most appreciated as I for the most part am really happy about the results possible just not sure I can reliably count on the patch for my shooting needs.

Since you didn't mention any recording failures, I assume your problem with these two videos is the choppy image quality? If so, this level of image quality is to be expected when shooting highly detailed scenes with complex motion. In these cases, the camera needs to use a higher maximum bitrate to encode all the details in the image. For this purpose, I'd suggest trying my 75Mbps Peak Performance Patch:

What I was trying to point out was is more clear at the beginning of the 1st clip. You can see a deterioration in the image. I can post another example to show more of what I'm talking about. These clips are just random shots I was just browsing though to give examples. The second clip is fine but I would like to try the Peak Performance Patch and see the difference in results. Most of shots will have action and water shots are common as well, so I'm just trying to find what I can and cannot not do with this hack/patch. Thanks for the quick reply and the effort into making the patches available.

Here's another clip of what I'm talking about, http://vimeo.com/21084517
