$375 for GH1 with LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm Lens w/ Panasonic EPP !

I just placed an order for the deal at $375 through Facebook.

Originally I was having the same problem as you, Lake Films, with it showing as $375, then jumping back up to $499 at the payment page.

For me, I had previously registered an account there without the Facebook link and without an EPP account. I was still trying to use that account.

What I did instead was click through with the Facebook link, add the package to the cart, checkout and when it asked me to log in, I clicked Sign Up instead. I registered through that, and when it completed the registration, I could go through with the $375 price.

I've given them my credit card info, and have an order confirmation number now, but it's been over an hour and I haven't received an order confirmation email... Still crossing my fingers on this one.

Edit:
I spoke with the customer support and my order went through, but the body is back ordered till February. I should probably get the lens in a week or so though...

YOU are my new hero! Lol...It worked, thank you for the advice....

Hi folks! Another newbie about to enter the world of GH1 photo/filming. This is my first DSLR and will be shooting videos on it. I'm literally hours away from getting off work, going to the bank to deposit money and completing my order at Panny's(just learned that nickname - I feel so part of the gang already) site. I got the 375 deal and can't find any reason not to jump on it... except for this hack issue. Does anyone have links to pre & post hack GH1 videos? I am nervous about getting the deal and not being able to appreciate it. I mean, I might be at a novice level but the audience I want to show these videos to aren't. Is it an acceptable quality, say if it were projected on a 60 inch screen?

*I saw a bunch of videos on vimeo already and I have to say, hack or no hack, this thing looks like a rockstar!

Sorry, I'm referring to stills. It's worse in video.

well that´s not good - I´d be talking to pany repair or maybe a quick return - you have 30 days and they should honor regardless if the 375 is available or not - iso 1600 shot should be alittle noisy but you shouldn´t have any fpn - now I´m depressed ( not ) ....ah those chinese !

Official Response from Panasonic about the Facebook Store!

Official Response from Panasonic about the Facebook Store!

Hi All,

This is Alana - social media editor at Panasonic. I run the official Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and Ustream accounts.

I see some of you are having issues with our Facebook VIP store. First of all, the price should never be jumping back up. It should stay at the discounted rate. IF it IS jumping, it's probably because you have a REGULAR Panasonic.com account that you created a while back and that you are signing in as.

---> In this case you need to create a NEW Facebook account. <---

So, when you go to purchase, click SIGN UP instead of LOGIN and create a new account. Does that make sense? I apologize for the confusion.

There's a lot of demand for the GH1 & GH2 cameras, so we are doing our best to ship as quickly as possible, but do understand that every now and then we run into delays. (And remember, we only ship to US zip codes).

I try my best to keep up with the photography forums to answer any questions, but please do reach out via Facebook and/or Twitter. It's much quicker for you guys to get answers that way!

Thanks for being LUMIX customers :)

I was kind of freaking out about the vertical and horizontal lines but I have learned to deal with it over time. There is a huge 50+ page thread on this forum about the issue. There is also another thread that talks about settings to use to reduce it to a minimum. Coming from a pro video world this camera is a bit tricky to get right at first but I'm really getting the hang of it. I still think my HMC40 shoots better video minus the low light performance and depth of field. I have found the camera to be very clean in decent lighting with iso's up to 800.

I also wasn't as impressed with the low light performance of the camera when I first got it on Monday. I have now learned to like it and take into consideration the lens only goes to F3.6. F3.6 on my HMC40 is pretty darn dark as well. I think getting a good F1.8 lens or better would spank my HMC40.

Finally I think the video quality is killer considering I paid $375.00 for it. I mean what the heck do we expect for a camera this cheap? Remember this is not a pro video camera so do not expect it to beat one. We do not live in a fantasy world where a $400.00 camera is better then a $10,000.00 video camera. It just is not going to happen. I think this camera will have it's limitations just like the Canon DSLR's have their limitations (aliasing and moire).

I love this camera and I am glad I bought it.

Don't fall victim to everything you read on internet forums. Remember, it's not a professional camera, it cost $375, and I think a lot of the complaining comes from people that do not know how to manually operate a camera, how to use lighting, or are expecting too much after upgrading from a $200 palmcorder.

When you turn up the gain/ISO on any camera, you get noise, that's just how that works...something has to give...nothing in life is free. Taking ISO1600 pictures with the GH1 is pushing it. If lower noise/high ISO shooing is important, buy a Nikon D700....but be prepared to spend a big chunk of cash. If like me, most of the pictures you take are of your cats, then the GH1 works great...then again...I also own a flash. ;)

If you are forced to shoot video at ISO1600, then light your scene for ISO1600. It will still be noisy, but it will look worse if your lighting setup sucks and the image is underexposed. I shoot weddings, where 99% of my work is in terrible lighting, and I have little/no control over lighting at all. But despite all the doom and gloom posts about some massive defect in the GH1 FPN, which Chinese manufacturers purposely install into GH1 cameras as a conspiracy to antagonize no-budget amateur film-makers in the west, the sky has yet to fall on me. :)

If the GH1 fits your budget, and the GH2 does not, then go for it! Just take into consideration other costs like software (for pulldown removal/transcoding if necessary), and lenses...which can be cheap for manual lenses...or very expensive for Lumix lenses that were made for your camera.

Forget about the "hack"...they quit selling hackable cameras a LONG time ago, unless you want a used GH1.

It's not a D700, it's not a Panaflex, but it's an all-around pretty cool little camera...especially for $375!! If you get one, just spend more time using it, then reading internet forum posts telling you all about what they think is "defective" on your camera. Good luck!

Hi All,

Any chance you can put in a good word for those of us who recently ordered and get older stock cameras with older firmware that are hackable or maybe tell your team to release new GH1 firmware?

totally agree...however you shouldn´t have fpn at iso 1600 in stills mode , imho - and wow to having a panasonic rep visit - that´s one of the qualities about panasonic that have set them apart since the dvx100 days - let´s hope everyone who wanted this camera but just couldn´t get it when it was more expensive can now throw down the bucks and have the system work - I personally had to make a few compromises because I live in mexico and had to ship to a friends house - I won´t get the camera until march and I won´t have the 30 day limit of return but it was well worth the risk and wait for the price and I want to thank panasonic for this generous offer - I was waiting to jump on the videodslr bandwagon trying to keep using my z1 and make that investment pay , and the gh1 is not a perfect camera when looking at all the competition at the moment , but it is a perfect choice for 375 dollars and I think there´s obviously alot of agreement with that opinion. It will buy me the time to allow the perfect hybrid to arrive ...i.e. maybe two years away at most - thanks pany !

First test of the $375 Panasonic GH1 with Lumix G Vario 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH Mega OIS Lens walking in fresh snow. Manual video settings were F7.1 , 1/125sec, 100 iso and AWB in 1280x720 @60fps.

well, that looks fine to me - I´m researching cheap fd adapters as I´ve got an old canon lens collection , and nd filters , and cards of course - I´ve read that people are even using class 4 cards w/o problems

can you get any shallow depth of field with the kit lens?

I ordered this package on Jan 24. I received a call from Panasonic today stating that their system only allows USA issued credit cards. My credit card is Canadian, but I have a US shipping address. I am so frustrated right now. I shop online (US sites) reguarly using the same Canadian Visa and this is the first time I have encounter this problem! I cannot believe it does not work with such a large company.

I'm too am very tempted to pick up this camera. I'm waiting on a GH2 (backordered) and am itching to compare the Panasonic's to the Canons (currently using a T2i).

I don't really care about the 14-42 lens (too slow), but I already have some FD lenses and an adapter waiting for my GH2, so I could use them on the GH1 in the interim.

The fact that it's not hackable (afaik) and thus harder to sell off without a loss when the GH2 finally arrives makes it less of a good deal and decided to take it off my radar today.

Still tempting though.

Hmm, maybe if I sold both lens and cam I could recoup my costs.

Do yourself a favor and get a 16GB class 10 card. They're so cheap these days ($25-30) and you can be assured that the card will work well in any camera (such as Canon's that choke on class 6 cards).
Here's a link to a card that I (along with a lot of others) use and have had no issues with: Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10

If your budget allows, have a look at the 32GB card as it's currently less than 2x the price of the 16GB card (better cost/GB).
