$2K Asus vs $4K Apple - Adobe Premiere CS6 Benchmark and Hardware Test

GPU RAM and Striped SSDs, of course, jump out as significant factors in the test.

Plus, I have the Asus at $2600 with that GPU and adding about $800.00 for the Crucial M4 SSDs.

The retina display on the Mac contributes nothing to performance, but adds about $400.00 to the price.

Tax is about another $300 or so.

That being said, not sure what the point of this thread is.

If a PC works for you, then that's your choice.

If you prefer a Mac, go for it.

They're just tools, and these threads seem to always turn out bad.

At least that's my experience in seven years of being here and moderating.

Just built the best of both worlds for me. Built a hackintosh. PC parts running Mountain Lion, and Win7. Its screamin fast too. I think I spent about $1600, in a Mac pro I would have spent near $5000.

MacPro is long in the tooth.

Wish I had the capability to build a Hackintosh. Better GPUs, faster processor, onboard USB3, 6GB SATA III, and I'm on board.

Macs are pricier, no doubt about it.

I think that's what they run. The one in question had the 3G video card, and dual M4 Crucial 512 GB striped SSDs, which a/t Amazon, runs about $1K or so more.

wonder how much dropping the SSD's would save, and if it would make sense to then purchase and install your own. I'm torn between my next computer being the new model or just building a dedicated tower and use both for batch renders... where possible.

I think that's what the testers did.

Drop the stock 1.5 TB plattered drive and installed the after market Crucial M4 SSD pair.

Love to give dual striped SSDs a try, and suppose I will when I eventually build my next system. I'm thinking that'll probably be sometime in late 2014, so 2 years from now. Hopefully by that time the prices will have dropped so much that I won't have to think twice about it.

I think just about anyone can build one. It was quite frustrating the first day with the software hoops I had to jump through. I went to tonymacx86 for all my info. Of course I did a lot of thread reading to make sure I had all the compatible components. I have built a dozen computers before this. But I must say this took alot of work. It was worth it though.

I am using a gtx680, 240GB SSD for my OSX and all aps, with 4TB internal storage, not running raid as of yet though, 32GB ram, Front usb 3.0 and 2.0 finally got my firewire working too, got a toaster running on my esata for swapable hard drives to bring to work or home. Running the 8 thread i7 3770K at 4.5GHz Also just plugged in my old 10,000rpm HDD from my old windows machine and can boot to that for windows.

I have the asus g-74, obviously the predecessor to the g-75, Put it this way, I think I have used my mac (27" inch IMAC) maybe three times in the last year, the asus is a beast. The only issue that I have had is with the touchpad, but I usually use a mouse anyways. If I were you, I would go with the asus hands down. But thats me, I prefer adobe over finalcut, i run cs5.5.

I've found a few sellers on eBay selling Dell & HP servers, I got a dual Xeon 8GB server for a mere £300 and alarmingly it's a similar performance to my dual Xeon 24GB Mac Pro 2009. For the record the 2009 was very much the same spec as the 2010, in fact you can firmware flash a 2009 Mac Pro into a 2010. The 2009 model still sells on eBay for above £1000 so even in second hand equipment there's a disparity.

I've got a Windows proper dual boot on the Mac so this is Windows rating both as PCs.

Are you running Mountain Lion?

Any editing apps?

Any issues at all?

I have not tested audio extensively, and my external esata needs to be turned off if I turn the computer on, otherwise it doesn't start up. Thats about all I have to complain about. It runs like a dream right now. I use a 16 core 32GB ram mac pro at work, and I think this one runs smoother as of now. But mainly I think that is due to the SSD drive.

Editing apps I use are:
Final cut pro x 10.0.6
Adobe CS6 suite

so I have used Premier pro, after effects and photoshop without issues.
I have most of the Andrew Kramer third party plugins for After Effects Including Element and Optical Flares.
So far so good ;)

I figured if worse comes to worse when trying to install Mountain Lion, I could always revert back to a windows clean install and still work and have the brand new computer. But I REALLY wanted final cut on my home machine.

This is still new to me so like I said I have not done extensive testing such as the audio or creating a blue ray disc from my old windows based burner, however I did create a dvd on it no problem... created a few pro res videos for presentations and .h264 for uploads.
