"...in regards to video performance, the ASUS G75VW-DS73 absolutely crushed the Apple MacBook Pro Retina by margins of 400-500%."

Having switched to PC's years ago, I was not surprised to see a PC at half the cost of a Mac perform the same. I was surprised to see it dominate by that much though. I still can't understand why people say Macs are better :-P The Retina display certainly is gorgeous though.

Some of us still earn paychecks from Final Cut. That'd be why. Otherwise, I'm ready to jump off this fruit wagon next upgrade cycle.

Wasn't the ASUS running a raid SSD and the mac not, makes a big difference.

The point is Bang for the Buck. And this point goes to Asus.

Looks like you not only need a lot of money for owning an Apple, but also some extra time on your hands.

Thanks for this. I'm in the process of switching to PC and this confirms what I'm finding to be true - that the Macs cost a lot more than the PC's for comparable performance.

It's in the Cafe, so why not (as long as it stays civil of course)? Some of the most amusing things get posted in threads like this.

Yeah, unfortunately we've seen enough derail to mud slinging to know better, regardless of where the thread is placed. Nothing positive ever seems to come of it.

different hardware, different results. they also posted no info on codecs used.

The CUDA on the PC will perform much better with the higher speced PC video card, which makes a massive difference. RAID does as well. Yes Macs carry a cost premium and most of what you're paying for isn't in CPU/GPU, but other features (magsafe, unibody, 5 year battery, retina, etc.) Some people think its worth others think it's rip off, but there are a million threads on that....

I use both :)

I'm not going to rag on Apple, because they make nice stuff. I will say that I have a $500 ASUS and I love it. It's become my main editing machine.

I built a 2nd to state-of-the-art PC last year... (buy the 2nd to the best of everything for the best value)... and I've owned a macbook since 2006. I've built 5-6 PCs in my life... including those that went to other people.

My next computer will be a mac. I run photoshop on my PC and I'm surprised how often I see the little blue circle spinning... considering my machine is 16gb 222 ram with 2gb EVGA (was top rated) fermi-cuda 460 card... on top rated gigabyte board... with 2700 intel chip... even got the special "costa rica" batch... and of course caviar black drives throughout. I checked compatibility charts as usual... on paper, my PC should be pretty damn awesome.

Do I like my PC... yeah, it's fine... but whether I regret it or not... I'm definitely trying a mac for photo/video next time around. I've always had experience in both... and I'm surprised at the emotion on either side. I see a lot of people breezing through stuff effortlessly on their macs... and my own macbook experience has been pretty uneventful... in a good way.

Just saying... I think the haters on both sides probably have little experience with both platforms.

Very envious of your setup. However, I'd like to suggest the slowness you're seeing is partially the HD. After I installed an SSD as my primary drive (running PS off of it, and using it as the scratch disk), I saw a dramatic decrease in wait times vs. the 7200RPM drive I had been using. Of course, I still use HD's for most storage, but if I'm working on project, I'll put all the work (or as many of the largest and most accessed files as I can) on the SSD. Huge difference.

I'm currently working on a 200+ page book of photography using LR, PS, and InDesign, and have 106GB of images on my SSD. Had them on the HD before and always got the circle (especially in LR). Very rare to see it now.

Not trying to discourage you from moving to a Mac, but if you haven't tried using an SSD, it's worth giving it a try. (This is the one I use.) You m ay find it solves your problem.

Edit:

I'm using an old NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275, an i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz, and 8GB or RAM. Built the system back in late 2009. I was about to do a new one earlier this year because it was feeling so sluggish (even after doing a full re-insallation). In researching the latest components, I decided I'd go with an SSD. Then I thought, why not add the SSD to my old system first to see if that would help, especially since I'd be able to use it in the new system when I built it. But the SSD gave me a performance kick to give my aging system that fresh new feeling!

Here's my Windows Experience Index after installing the SSD. Before, it was something like a 5.6 because of the Primary hard disk. Not scientific, but still might be of interest. :

You may be right... my machine is all 7.6 and 7.8... except the Primary Hard Disk, which is 5.9.

I was tempted to look into an SSD before... maybe I'll give that a shot.

I have the Asus g74sx-3de and I love it, blows my (very)old mac pro out of the water. Makes working with HD or 4k content relatively easy, I love macs unfortunately I just can't afford them or justify the purchase at this point.

Anyone trying to get in with a slightly budget system I would highly recommend this series of laptops, obviously they are HUGE but that can be managed if you treat it almost like a desktop. I purchased it mainly to run resolve as my old mac(real old) could not take a cuda card required to run resolve.

The other nice thing is the ram and HD's are easily upgradable, and it has a usb3 slot would be nice if there was more but it's better than nothing. In fact it's inputs are seriously lacking but once again you pick and choose what you can and can't live without.

edit: some negatives other than size, battery life is not very long, built in speakers are horrible as is the track pad(aren't they all), I'm not a fan of the display and many of my attempts to properly calibrate have failed, I would recommend an external monitor for grades... that's all I can think of for now. It's been going strong for under a year now even after having a full cup of coffee dumped onto the keyboard!
