24p for skiing?

So this year is going to be my first time using my DVX with shooting skiing. I've mainly been shooting 30p with it, but I want a more filmic look, but at the same time I want to be able to slow mo any clip I feel like without having to shoot in 60i to get that smooth looking slow motion. Also if I shot 24p what would I have to set the shutter, im guessing somewhere around 180? What would be everyones suggestion?

I think in the manual it states that 1/60 shutter speed is appropriate for 24P. I confirmed this myself by adjusting the shutter speeds to see how they looked different, and I preferred the look of 1/60. Purely by coincidence I read it in the book later that was a good setting.

You'll love 24p for action sports. I've shot a lot of mountain bike stuff in 24, it looks amazing. This will be my first year using 24p for skiing as well. What I reccomend is to not go above 1/60 for realtime unless you want the high shutter look. If you plan on doing slow motion, make sure you shoot the shots you want to slow down in 60i with a 1/120th shutter or higher, then drop them into a 23.976fps timeline and slow them by 60 percent (or, for a 29.976fps slow to 50 percent).

Good luck!

I use 1/120 shutter occasionally with 24pa. Just follow your subject :)

And you're not getting away with slowed down 24fps footage unless you become a master at twixtor. Even then, you should really just pick your shots and go 60i.

All the info sounds great guys! I'll be shooting a descent amount of follow shots too with my fisheye, so do you think it would be a good idea to shoot that in 30p, or should I up the shutter in 24p? I've only ever shot 30p with my dvx but I heard its not good to mix 24p, and 60i on a tape, is that true? Also what timeline should I be working in if I shoot 30p?

30P is for teh noob (like kidwoo back in the day, he's seen the light now tho). 24p/pA all the way. Haha I made a rhyme, I'm clever.

I only use 30p for shots where I want just a tad of a slo mo effect.......IE I still use a 24fps timeline and slow the 30p shots to 80%.

I mix 24p, 30p and 60i all the time. Your NLE should have a capture setting where each clip gets separated and interpreted individually.

Hopefully I am not hijacking this thread too bad, but I have a question in regard to all this. I, too will be shooting action sequences (off road racing) in slow motion. I just bought the Firestore FS-4 HDPro and plan to use the Quicktime 24p setting. Will I need to change that setting to shoot 60i for slow motion or does it remain the same and I just switch to 60i in the camera settings? Thank you in advance for your time.

XH-A1 question on this but it may be a general question. Is it ok to mix shooting 24p/f and 60i on the same tape or is it better to change tapes when changing the frame rate? Thank you.

Someone smarter than me may have a better answer, But I have switched on the dvx before, and the only problem (in FCP since it doesn't have scene detect) is knowing what mode you shot in. Wouldn't be an issue with 60i, 30p, or 24p modes on dvx, but it would be an issue with 24p ADV (only because of how you have to import the footage differently, and work in different timelines). I don't know how the XH-A1 records, but putting it on the same tape wouldn't hurt, as long as you gave yourself a visual cue on the tape to know when you switched from footage that dropped in a 29.97 timeline to footage that had to be imported and dropped into a 23.98 (or 24) FPS timeline. Hope that this made sense. If not let me know and I'll try to explain better.
