I've switched to the Arri rig.

The Letus was awesome but I had a couple of shoots were I was on the shoulder for nearly an hour at the time (documentaries) and cause it is so solid it started getting heavy hahaha defeats the purpose of a light camera. Also if you're trying to look inconspicuous it would be the wrong rig as it looks pretty impressive and always got comments on set.

I have more docos coming up and the Arri is more lightweight and just as solid.

Keen to test out desaturated c-log thanks Marvin.

Great images James lovely stuff.

One of my favourite features of the camera (besides 4k and c-log obviously) has been been able to change the sensor size in HD. I mainly stick to the s35 for extra sharpness but on a project last week in a cramp sound recording studio i just kept jumping from s35 to FF when I needed to go wider rather than changing lenses (24-70mm 2.8 L), plus also been able to get some slow mo at the same time. Also FF has become my ClassicSoft filter on some shoots as it has a very pleasant beauty feel to the skin particularly for CU women while still been sharp. Plus changing between the two to enhance the depth of field for different shots has been great.

I have found that recording externally in 4k really takes care of the compression artefact and banding that is found in the MJPG but I only use it on shoots that don't require 4k and were I find the need to carry the added gear/weight.

Has anyone noticed the over-heating warning sign coming on while shooting? It came on once for me when recording simultaneously externally/internally mirroring the lcd, it wasn't a hot set or day but after about 2-3 hrs started getting the warning sign so turned it off to cool down. It came on once again soon after so I let the camera rest a bit longer and didn't get the warning again after that.

Cheers guys keep up the great posts!

BTW if anyone is interested I am putting up my Letus Cinema Master Series rig for the 1DC on ebay.

Hi José
Just wonder how to record 4K on external for 1DC?

As for the over heating I find hand holding the camera are more to over heat, also changing CF card seems to be able to solve the problem too( or blowing the CF card compartment and the card usually col it down), some CF are hotter than others when use hard.

Could have been CF card as it was a brand new 1000x card I used on that shoot.

You can't record external 4k on the camera however when the camera is in 4k the external 8bit Prores 422 image is exceptional. It's sharper, wider and much nicer than s35 mode plus you don't get any compression banding that happens sometimes with MJPG. To me it seems like 4k downsampled to HD, which is perfect for shoots that don't require the benefits of 4k or don't have the budget or time to deal with all the data involved.

James have you done any tests with C-Log saturation all the way down? i see you were using -2, but I had a feeling that -4 might be better for avoiding banding issues and more compression friendly.
I have not, I will try that.

I am curious your shooting style for docos. After shooting on the road a bit, I found conventional rigs to be cumbersome, and butt-stocks to be too simple.

Filmic seems to be the holy grail of digital imagery. But that means many things to many people. Now that digital is maturing, I find myself comparing cameras less with the ideal of film.

The 1D-C does not look filmic to me. Though, I feel it can. But it's default imaging has a real rich and saturated look. Especially the still jpegs(vs. video)...

(original jpeg still, not post processed)

That looks wonderful!

Working with JPEGS, grading and natural light.

Just finding the range from 'digital' to 'filmic' in grades.

The 3rd and 4th ones have a BW filter applied which affected the contrast, and added detail to the highlights.

The last one is going with the popular trend to raise the black levels and add contrast, which gives a dynamic yet soft look, similar to film, but I have never been able to fully embrace the look, as it is 'degrading' the image, so to speak.

I wish I had grabbed some 4K footy for this shot. But glad that it could look fairly similar regardless of jpeg or mjpeg.

Wow, those look really nice. Post one of them bigger though so I can like it more.

(the third one)
Other than brightening the eyes, I try to grade the still frames as I would motion, with power windows and such. The jpeg was shot to mimic c-log. little shadow, and long roll off in the highlights.

...Anyway, for me it's minimal enough to not worry about it. Sure, 10bit or even 12bit is really nice on paper, but I don't even want to start thinking about file sizes. RED has an interesting thing going with RED code and that might be the best route really.
It might be nice to have 10/12bit 1080 s35 though. =)

When you say 'jpeg shot to mimic c-log' what picture profile you have it on? Also how come you prefer jpeg over RAW?
Just shot an underexposed Neutral. It is in post that I graded it in a way that mimic'ed C-Log. Nothing scientific, but I boosted the mids, and dug into the shadows a bit, creating most of the contrast in the lower mids, and rolled off the highlights. The shot was quite under exposed to allow an endless roll off. But that means the shadows are not as rich.

I prefer RAW when it matters, but I was shooting a lot, and didn't need the files taking up my hard drive space. The JPEG files emulate MJPEG workflow better, as the shadows and highlights are less forgiving with heavy grading, and that challenges me to get things right, down to a stop.

Would be cool to have a picture style which favored the highlights and had the same color palette as C-Log.

It is by no means as comfortable or easy as shooting with a proper shoulder camera but I have adapted to it, it really depends what I'm shooting because I need a rig that can be built up for commercial shoots, etc but stripped down quickly to be as compact as possible. First on the list I need rails for handles and matte box (when needed) and a top handle for carrying and getting the camera down for low shots. I'll post a picture up of it when I get a chance.

My background is in drama and ENG cameras so I prefer to work on the shoulder and absolutely detest shaky handheld DSLR shots it's my pet hate haha.

Very cool. I am too tall to shoot from shoulder all the time. Part of the reason I love smaller cameras. I am over 1.8 meters, and about 6'2". How tall are you?

Hehe... yes, for sure.

And especially if the uncompressed 4k-->1080p via HDMI could be at least 10bit 422. That would be a nice reward for hooking up an external recorder.

Canon's 8bit HDMI is limited at circuit board level. HDMI port on Canon DSLR cameras was originally intended only for TV playback, they didn't bother adding 10bit capability, neither did consumers at that time.

Haha I'm about the same 6'2, that's why I love the top handle makes it so much easier. It's so rare but how good is filming people of your own height? haha
