AC160 1080 60p cometh

$100 under that. I was amazed. I don't think I am allowed to say where I got it am I? I was going to buy from Texas Media and Phil was very helpful, but they didn't have any in stock so I went back to my old standby and was blown away by the price. A dealer here in St. Louis had it for $4445, but they had no stock either. I needed the camera by Tuesday.

Wow, what a great deal. I've always assumed that the big mail order firms like B&H generally had the lowest prices available.

Many online forums have rules against people engaging in marketing for their own benefit. Some have rules against posting info like phone numbers, email addresses, or web pages for vendors. I have not noticed anything posted regarding doing that here. But I admit that I am pretty new to these forums.

I would honestly be surprised if there was a rule against people saying where they bought their equipment from. That would be rather extreme, in my opinion.

Maybe someone else could clarify for us what the rule is here regarding this subject.

I think it's generally acceptable for you to say where you bought something, but going over the top about it is probably gonna get your posts TOSSED unless the vendor is a sponsor on the forums.

So while "I bought this new fancy thing from ABC Camera Corp" is probably fine, posting about it 100 times or saying something like "ABC Camera Corp has the best deals and prices, you should visit their website at www.abcwebsite.com" is not acceptable.

I would assume twice the size..

Nope, about the same size. The only file size differentiation occurs between modes like PH, HA, HG, HE which run at different bitrates (which is essentially what defines file size over the recorded duration).

Both 720 and 1080 run at the same bitrate in PH mode, so same file size. You might see some differentiation depending upon what you're shooting at the time (it is VBR recording) but generally speaking, if you shot a plain, unchanging white wall for 1 hour in 720 (PH mode) and 1080 (PH mode) then you should technically end up with exactly the same file size.

Read Barry's book (at least on the HMC book) where he explains the sweet spot shooting modes. To borrow a bit, 720 has more bits to work with in a smaller area, but 1080 has better color reproduction, but generally speaking, both are pretty close to one another and you really just shoot the mode that works best for you because - again - there is no file size difference.

I think it's about an average of 21Mbps more or less for it's 60i or 30p mode and judging from the TM900, it'll probably be an average of about 25Mbps for 1080 60p.

Panasonic says that as well but when I looked at the average bit rates, I think it was closer to 25 to 25.5 on average. Some clips would be as little as around 24Mbps and other clips would be around 26Mbps. I think I might have seen one clip around 27Mbps. Now who's to say it wont be higher on the AC160.

Still waiting for the AC160 spring 2012 promised free upgrade to 1080/60p. November until now was a long time ago, beginning to have doubts, no further mentions, no one asking, maybe no one cares...but I'll buy the AC160 if they do.

Spring hit about 1 week ago, so there's still about 3 months of spring left in 2012. Personally, when they said "Spring 2012" I read that as "NAB 2012." It's the ideal springboard for any important news that a professional video products manufacturer might want to unleash.

NAB is just a couple of weeks away. If NAB comes and goes with no news about the AC160 update, then that would be valid cause for doubts. I presume that NAB will bring some clarity, however.

Maybe they are still working on it.

Saying that they "have no news" doesn't mean there is nothing to say, only that they cannot say anything about it regardless of whether there is development or not. This is made a bit more obvious by the fact they expect an announcement in about 2 weeks. :)

Still, Panasonic - and most companies - don't make a big announcement about their plans to do something if they're not planning to do it. They were awfully specific about the timeline.

I mean, c'mon, this is Panasonic, not RED. ::::ZING!!::::
