••Fujinon TV Lens on GH-1...Don't Drool••

Long Vimeo wait time resulted in a late night for me here in UK!! But worth it.

The lens has a unique soft look to it - it really does LOOK like TV footage.

TV footage I have seen so many times - looks exactly like this. If you want that look creatively then this is THE lens. I feel it's an interesting lens if not the most cinematic, amazingly bright and with an incredible range. Good DOF. But it still looks like TV.

To have this softer lens on a pin sharp HD picture is interesting, but I have a feeling there will be times I will miss the incredible sharpness of other lenses, in particular the Zeiss and Leicas of this world... or should I say, out of it.

The last two shots seem waaaay sharper. Same lens?

I am also a bit confused when you say you don't need to refocus the lens when zooming? How does that work then? Also what's the F stop range through the zoom range on this one?

No noise at all from the zoom mechanism... were you using an external boom mic?

The original footage does not look at all like this. I noticed when I did my export on FCP of the interview part that it looked incredibly soft. I must check the settings. All the footage was shot with the Fujinon. It puzzles me that the last three shots are exactly the same as the original, yet the interviews look like poop!

We had the lens at F1.2 through the whole range...of course you got to add the 2x converter. Manual zoom, smooth as can be

The lens has a back focus...so when we correctly set our focus, we zoom in on the subject and when we zoom out, everything is still in focus.

We used a Sennheiser K6-C and ME66 Kit for audio......

Well the last two shots are stunning.

Strange about the interview clips!

On the basis of the last two shots I decided to take the plunge and a buy a similar one... the 12.5 to 75mm F1.2

I love the fact it has a constant aperture through the zoom range and a constant focus. Then, I guess it is DESIGNED for video after all.

I downloaded the full file from Vimeo in 1080i format, and you have some interlacing going on, so maybe that is why the interview clips didn't work out as intended in the final Quicktime file?

Something is not right. i downloaded the Vimeo clip to compare and it looks like garbage...yet the last 3 clips look identical...something is up. SO you bought a Fujinon lens too? C-Mount?

Those last few shots are incredible. I can't wait to get this camera and start experimenting with different lenses.

The interviews looks a little too soft to my eyes. That is just a preference though. Is interesting to see this concept. Keep up the good work and info!

First of all, thanks for all the great info Super8... it's been VERY helpful, and my wheels have started turning:Drogar-Love(DBG):

So, with the 2x extender, how wide can you go without a vignette? At 14mm, with the extender (equaling 28mm, or 56mm in 35 terms, right?) there is no vignetting going on?

My main concern at this time, after a bit of research, is going as wide as I can, stahying as fast as I can, and not spending 1-2k on a lens. What I've seen so far is the online spreadsheet that's been going around, and this helpful info from DVXuser Upshot:

Out of all the 25mm c-mounts I've amassed... I'd put them in this order:
1. Macro Switar 26mm F1.1 (full sens coverage @ 16:9, Joy to use, exceptional performance, lovely bokeh)
2. Cine Ektar 25mm F1.4 (full sens coverage @ 4:3!!, easy to use, great performance, butter bokeh)
3. Soligar 25mm F0.95 (vigettes but my best @ F0.95 (from what I've seen the Berthiot 25mm F0.95 beats it though), little challenge to handle but not bad, great performance, decent bokeh)
4. Schneider Xenoplan 25mm F1.9 (full sens coverage @ 4:3!! easy to use after I did some modifications (focus grip), wonderful performance, so so bokeh)

With the 2x extender I can go full wide with absolutely no vignetting. That 1.5 extender might just work fine as the C- mount lend is closer to the camera mount than my Nikon mount. It might be one of thise things were you just have to try it.

Just to be clear. You have a Nikon mount on the lens, then a x2 extender that enlarges the image circle x2 and then a Nikon to m4/3 adapter?

You are correct...with perfect focus to infinity and beyond!
It sounds like a lot...but it is not. by the pictures you can see that it is not a monster setup

Super 8, great thread and thanks for all the info. Interesting to see one of these zooms at work on the GH1.
What is the light loss like on this set up, I presume you're loosing a stop or 2?

I was going to post some tests on c-mount extenders but I'm waiting for my c-mount prime lenses to come back from being overhauled.

Basically, c-mount extenders do not work. I bought the computar 1.5x and vivitar extenders and you get a very small peep hole image circle smaller than what you'd see from your c-mount lens without the extender.

Perhaps super 8 found something unique by using a nikon extender and machining the fujinon to the nikon mount. Many folks on other forums with the G1 tested c-mount extenders both 1.5x and 2x and they don't work so I wouldn't waste your money on the c-mount extenders.

Basically, it's been a crap shoot. You have to go through a number of c-mount zoom lenses to find one that will work well with the GH1.

I have a few Fujinon and Angenieux zooms and they all have varying image circle sizes. Definitely my Angenieux zooms are very sharp but I still need to engage the 2x digital zoom on the GH1 to get a usable picture with out any vignetting.

Again, this is putting c-mount zooms on a c-mount to a m4/3 adapter and maybe there is some advantage machining a c-mount lens to a nikon mount and using a nikon extender.

Super 8 thanks for the great results. I'm sure soon we'll be able to figure out what other c-mount zooms will have great results and the best mounts and extenders to use with the GH1 as well so keep it coming.

I also use a 26mm switar 1.1 with my GH1, BUT I've just bought a c-mount Fujinon 12.5-75mm 1.2 but it does not fit with this adapter (the fuji is 5,5 cm and the adapter is up 4,9 cm), and there is terrible vigneting, and seems to have focus trouble at some range. Do you have a solution ? :)

here is an example with my 26mm :

I just got my C-mount adapter and was all excited to use my Fujinon 12.5-75mm and I hit the same issues you did. Doesn't fit and even if you make it fit the image is only a small circle.

If you unscrew the black part you can thread polished metal piece in, but then there is nothing holding it to the rest of the lens. In any case, it still produces only the small circle image in the center. Not what I was expecting, but I guess the lesson is that there is a lot of variation in the results when using these C-mount lenses.
