••Fujinon TV Lens on GH-1...Don't Drool••

Ever since I got my GH-1 I have been crazy busy with too many projects to count.

I have been searching for a good zoom for my camera and been testing several zooms out there. Finally I came across this Fujinon TV lens 14mm-150mm. I just absolutely love it. It was designed to be used 16mm cameras as it has a C-Mount and it came from a Arriflex. I just machined it to a Nikon mount and viola! I love the images it gives out and I am incredibly impressed with the smooth silky zoom.

The images are stunning. I used the camera and lens over a 5 day shoot and my director of Photography (in the picture) was more than impressed with the images.

Here is the little lens in action

The crop factor is typically reversed, ie: they don't cover the entire GH1 sensor. Do a search in this forum for "c-mount" and there are some pretty examples.

I have a couple of c-mount lenses and they all goes pinhole on the GH1. This setup looks very fine but I wounder what advantage this have compared to great Nikon/Canon primes?

Zoom is nice but since the GH1 light weight I can move the tripod.

14mm-150mm seems like a good advantage? 14mm lenses aren't easily found. Also, TV lenses are often very fast (Apertures of f1.2 up to f2.0 aren't uncommon). Also, you can zoom.

These lenses are usually pretty cheap on eBay.

PLEASE POST SOME FRAME GRABS!!! Or even better a clip on Vimeo.

The c-mount adapters are widely available and dirt cheap. No need to machine a Nikon adapter or similar to have these kinds of lenses work on the GH1.

Looks great with the set up you have there. Can't wait to see the pics - so frustrating having this teasing carrot with no pics.

Does it vignette at 14mm? Do you get circular bokeh?

Yes aperture of F1.2-2.0 range is a very desirable feature in a zoom. Then there are the trade-off of pinhole, vignetting and circular bokeh which just looks weird IMHO.

I would like to see some material from that lens. It looks very tasty :)

Guys....just uploaded some quick clips from the shoot...not a lot of stuff...but I specially put some of the zoom ins for you to look at. I don't know how it is going to look in VIMEO but I can guarantee that in our HD monitor it looks fantastic. More explanation later....

If this looks good, I'm selling my SGpro and D80 to pick up this setup. I'm excited to see the vid, but it's still processing...

Long Vimeo wait time resulted in a late night for me here in UK!! But worth it.

The lens has a unique soft look to it - it really does LOOK like TV footage.

TV footage I have seen so many times - looks exactly like this. If you want that look creatively then this is THE lens. I feel it's an interesting lens if not the most cinematic, amazingly bright and with an incredible range. Good DOF. But it still looks like TV.

To have this softer lens on a pin sharp HD picture is interesting, but I have a feeling there will be times I will miss the incredible sharpness of other lenses, in particular the Zeiss and Leicas of this world... or should I say, out of it.

The last two shots seem waaaay sharper. Same lens?

I am also a bit confused when you say you don't need to refocus the lens when zooming? How does that work then? Also what's the F stop range through the zoom range on this one?

No noise at all from the zoom mechanism... were you using an external boom mic?

all I can say is that Vimeo looks like crap...I can guarantee that it does not look like that in our original footage...hmm. I guess I need to find a way to re-compress. All shots were done with the same lens....

baffling....

Don't mean to be obtuse but the zoom is controlled by hand/FF? Or is there a motorized zoom, and if so, how is it powered?

Thanks.
