As the end result for many of us is a SD DVD, one often wonders whether it is worth shooting 720p or 1080i when SD is the end result. Barry was kind to provide some comparison shots in another thread demonstrating how downrezed 1080i and 720p compared to native SD footage. This was a useful...
Thought this might be an interesting story given the whole film vs. digital debate.
Last night I was cleaning out my room and I came accross one of my old 16mm films from college. We'd shot it regular Black and White 16mm (not super), and then transfered it to Beta SP for editing and then...
Ok, finally got a movie up. Had to encode in MPEG4 since H264 messed up the colors and made it much brighter. The colors look good but it distorts with the motion. You can see the JPEG stills on the other thread which look much closer to the actual camera output...
Visiting relatives in D.C. and headed down to the Kennedy Center for an hour. I wanted to see how close to the "golden" look I could get in camera so these are completely without CC. The ones inside are my favorite as they kind of have a Godfather under-exposed quality. Of course the JPEG...
From Avid, what is the best way to export a sequence that will retain the sharpness and color information most accuratly from your timeline? What compression. Also, should one do RGB or 601 (which does the footage start out in?).
For the last couple of years at my Film school, I've been working with the DVX100A and using a Cartoni Laser with it. I liked the setup quite a bit.
After graduating in May, I purchased an HVX200 and just recently got a Cartoni Focus. I like how the Focus's camera plates is locked on...
Several people have mentioned that even when shooting to mini-DV, the HVX200 looks better than the DVX100 in SD. I'd love to see how big a difference we're talking about but my only friends with DVXs are out of town and won't be back for another month or so.
If anyone on the board happens to...
I've been playing with some of my 720 24pN footage in Avid Xpress Pro HD. After a little CC, I tied to export it. I first did same as source (which would mean the Avid DV100 codec since that's how Avid handles DVXProHD) and then tried uncompressed. To my suprirse, the same as source looked...
I'd like to get a Focus head but don't have much to spend. The Focus will run me around $800. Are there any well made 2 stage legs that can support it for $400 or less?

I've heard it suggested that one can find good used stuff cheap. I personally am looking for a Sennheiser 416 and have heard that they can be found used for $600-$800. Where is a good place to find used stuff (besides E-bay)?
Ok, I'd like to get an AT4073a since so many have recommended it but I can't find a good package.
At B&H, they have two packages with the ME66. One is a "basic kit" for $750 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=421933&is=REG&addedTroughType=search)...
I need to get a boom mike and these are the two in my price range (under $700). I've heard the AT4073a is better. Anyone can attest to this. The need for phantom power kind of bugs me but will be worth it if it gives better sound.
Ok, I'm aware that the HVX200 actually has 960x540 chips that are pixel shifted to a resolution of 1440x810 which are then converted to either 1920x1080 or 1280x720. Now I just read that the image is actually 960x720 in 720 resolution. What exactly does this mean? Is this the case of all...
I'm in D.C right now (well, Annanndale which is 20 minutes away), and figured while I'm up here I might pick up some equipment. Any good places with professional equipment? In particular, I'm looking for somewhere that carries a Cartoni Focus, a decent shotgun mike, and a good bag (don't like...
I saw a post where someone claimed the HVX200 was on its way out because of poor sales. Considering how hard it seems to be to find this camera, I doubt that's true but I'm curious if anyone has sales figures for the HVX200, XLH1, HD100, Z1, or even the various DVX100 models.
Over summers I teach a short film course for the Advance Program for young scholars (a credit based program for gifted high-schoolers kind of like the Duke program). In the process of the course, we produce a short film. Even though i have an HVX200, I decided it would be best not to try to...
