Sales figures?

I saw a post where someone claimed the HVX200 was on its way out because of poor sales. Considering how hard it seems to be to find this camera, I doubt that's true but I'm curious if anyone has sales figures for the HVX200, XLH1, HD100, Z1, or even the various DVX100 models.

You've Got to be Kidding

You've Got to be Kidding

Either you've got to be kidding, or someone is pulling your leg; or.... someone from one of the other camera manufacturers is spreading a rumor, because their is NO WAY that HVX sales are poor.

I'll bet that the HVX is outselling all of ita competitors combined.

Panasonic saw its electronics business grow 4% during the year, with audio-visual (AV) equipment sales up 6% and IT equipment sales up 2%. Plasma TVs and digital cameras helped the AV sector, while the IT sector offset lower handset sales with higher sales of PCs and automotive electronics products, the company said.

Net profit rose 164% to ¥154 billion and net sales grew 2% to ¥8.9 trillion. That sales figure easily beat Sony, which on Thursday reported sales of ¥7.5 trillion for the same period, confirming Panasonic's position as the world's largest consumer electronics company on a revenue basis.

There you have it

Manufacturers can claim outlandish sales figures like 100,000 Z1/FX1s all they want, doesn't make it true.

Call a few dealers and ask for yourself. I have. HVX is outselling all comparably-priced HDV units combined. Whoever is spreading the rumor is either grossly mis-informed, or is outright lying, one of the two.

""HVX is outselling all comparably-priced HDV units combined""

Not in Europe for I can see... And yes manufacturers are claiming wrong figures for sales, Panasonic does that too, and 'count down' tricks are marketing tools, they use that also for selling cars. Like: Still 367 Micra's to go with free airco!

How many HVX's are really sold in the EU?

I can't comment on Europe but they've not been an outstanding success down here, I think we've had one, maybe two calls for one, much more interest in the XL-H1 and of course the Z1s are everywhere. I'd go so far as to say the DVX100 is probably still doing better than the HVX 200.

The rumour could have some vague inkling of truth behind it, given that Sony and Panasonic are working on a next generation prosummer HD camera using a new codec. Just how pro or consummer it'll be I don't know.

Regardless of all the merits and sales of any of these cameras there's still a huge perception that HDV is too hard to work with out there and all the chaos over recording formats and decks and NLEs is not helping one bit.

Instead of all the players fighting over their share of the pie we'd all be better served if they focussed on making the pie bigger. That Sony and Panasonic might be doing something together is a small step forward now they need to get JVC and Canon on board. And while they're all fighting amongst themselves I suspect the upstarts like SI and Red could well steal the show. Both of those teams know how to do it, listen to the prospective customers, tell them what's coming and make their products easy to use.

I was skeptical that the HVX would sell. We reluctantly preordered 5 back in August of last year. After many delays, we PRESOLD all 5 units and have continuously been selling since January. I can say without a doubt that this camera has saved our business and is poised to be the best camera deal on the market for HD OR SD.

All I can say is that in my little neck of the woods , Marin county near San Francisco, an awful lot of professional cameraman have bought them. I don't have any friends who own Z1 or JVC and one who bought the Cannon. That's despite the fact that producers still seem pretty leary of the P2 workflow. Off the top of my head I know at least 7-8 cameraman who've bought the HVX and my local professional rental house bought 3 HVX's and no HDV.

It appears that most producers are weary of P2 and all the directors, d.p.'s, and operators are undermining them and rushing to buy. :) (And they are the ones who know a good camera when they see it).... seems to be the common theme

he he ;)

Sales have been excellent on the HVX200, it has no danger of going away due to low sales. This is actually quite laughable. It has been accepted and being tested by some of the best in this industry.

What I'm curious about is if there's any independent group that gives actual sales data. Rueters or something?

No company would give that direct information but public companies report total sales (which is what I posted earlier in this thread).

Suffice it to say that Panasonic as a company is doing quite well and the HVX as a product, well, time will tell. But remember, a LARGE part of the profitability of this camera is in the add on's. Panasonic has done a great job of sustaining exclusivity on these add on's. That's the sign of a product that will last.

Hi,

Not to be in your face on this Carlone but the only add-ons we have the market share on is the P2 cards, the matte boxes, filters, rails, and other paraphenalia sometimes equal the cost of the camera. ;-)

Best,

Jan

Part of that is because Panasonic Australia is just now formally launching it. They're bringing it to dealers this upcoming week, as part of the same tour where I'm doing customer training seminars. Once it's launched we'll see how it does.
