Is it possible in the admin settings of the site to remove the time limit for searches? Even after the upgrade, I still sometimes get this message: "This forum requires that you wait 20 seconds between searches. Please try again in 17 seconds" (or please try again in x seconds, however much...

Any fans of Columbo? Yesterday the BBC posted an article, Why the world still loves 1970s detective show Columbo: "there is a statue of Columbo in Budapest; in Romania, Columbo was so popular that when the show ended, the government asked Falk to video an address to the nation . . . " Unlike...

What kind of light do you think was used in this demo video for a Lafeeca French Press? I think it is just one light. It looks like it is set at the classic 45-45 angle --- 45 degrees vertically and horizontally to the subject. I see this in portraits. For example, this one of Steve Jobs for...

Because of Red's patent, Kinefinity will remove the RAW codecs from MAVO LF, MAVO 6K, TERRA 4K, and the upcoming MAVO Edge. https://ymcinema.com/2021/03/01/kinefinity-removes-raw-codecs-from-its-cinema-cameras/

Find two things that are the same price, one from the world of audio-video production, and one that is not.

Cartoni, Miller, O'Connor, Sachlter, Vinten. Yeah, we're not getting any of those. We probably can't even afford a Manfrotto. In fact, we can't even afford a knock-off of a Manfrotto. I'm looking for something less than $50, preferably around $25. As laid out in another thread, my brother...

How do y'all compare the brightness among lights when you're shopping? There seems to be inconsistency in units in their reported specs. One light was in lumens. It would be straightforward if they all just used lumens. But then I saw a bunch in lux, each at different distances. One was lux at...

Nikon in "Dire Straits" as its Slump is Particularly Untimely Smartphones and the pandemic are only partially to blame. Nikon had already been weak for a few years. operating deficit of almost half a billion dollars fear of conflicting with its DSLR camera sales made the company reluctant to...

Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound is free right now on Amazon Prime. It includes interviews with the greats like Walter Murch and Ben Burtt, as well as famous directors. I thought it did a good job stepping through history in a coherent way (when it doubt, explain it in chronological...

I don't. However there is evidence to suggest that not everyone feels that way. Disagreement causes in me a visceral response that is like a mild form of PTSD. I'm naturally diplomatic. I believe personality is partly genetic, the Myers-Briggs system seems uncannily accurate, and I most...

I have been saying Bayer filter wrong. It's pronounced like buyer, because that's how Bryce Bayer's name was pronounced. In the Wikipedia article for Bryce Bayer, you can see, "/ˈbaɪər/; pronounced BYE-er". Also in this video explanation of the filter, the speaker pronounces it so. At first I...

1998-99, in a 15-month period, famously there were at least 5 movies about simulation: Dark City, The Truman Show, The Matrix, Existenz, and The Thirteenth Floor. How many have you seen?

I was wondering what you all thought of this quote by cinematographer Gordon Willis (The Godfather, Annie Hall, All the President's Men): "I don't like blue in movies, especially period movies. I don't even like it in contemporary movies. I think it's a vulgar color on the screen. I don't hate...

I'm looking for a camera to recommend to my nephew, who's interested in doing Youtube videos about camping. I doubt his budget is more than $1,000, and he was probably hoping for something around $500. One of the better cameras in that range that I found is the Canon M50. But it lacks a...

My brother's son, 11, wants to make videos about bushcraft. The perfectionist in me wants to recommend a shotgun mic, boom mic stand, and XLR. But the cheapest set-up would be around $2,000 (Panasonic GH5, XLR adapter, Audio-Technica AT875R). Plus I'm not sure he will put up with the work...

For all the frustrated writers out there, Throw Mama from the Train is free to watch on Youtube:

One of the funnier series on Youtube: Kevin James (The King of Queens) started his own Youtube channel a few months ago. I can see he's a really good actor, although comedy actors are routinely underappreciated. Don't get me wrong, his channel is hit or miss, but they are uniformly well made...

In high school, while my friends were listening to U2 or Pearl Jam, I was usually listening to James Horner, John Barry, and Ennio Morricone. All three are gone, now that Ennio passed away today. Here is one of his most beautiful works, which you can't buy on CD new. Used copies are rare and...
