In high school, while my friends were listening to U2 or Pearl Jam, I was usually listening to James Horner, John Barry, and Ennio Morricone. All three are gone, now that Ennio passed away today.
Here is one of his most beautiful works, which you can't buy on CD new. Used copies are rare and were selling for $100 for a while. I finally found one but for a bit less. (I would not recommend the movie, though)
The man is legend and might possibly be legitimately crowned the greatest film composer of all time, neck and neck with John Williams.
So much of his work is beautiful. Lots of foreign films I haven't watched but have listened to the music. All of Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns (I think?) and also his mobster movie set in New York, Once Upon a Time in America, which is also one of my favorites.
A quote from Hans Zimmer, which perfectly sums up his music for me too: "Ennio taught me that the simplest, purest and honest melody is the hardest to write." --- https://www.facebook.com/hanszimmer/posts/10159882855379128
