Search Time Limit

Is it possible in the admin settings of the site to remove the time limit for searches?

Even after the upgrade, I still sometimes get this message: "This forum requires that you wait 20 seconds between searches. Please try again in 17 seconds" (or please try again in x seconds, however much time is left).

The delay may have made sense 20 years ago, when server hardware was weaker. These days, as a web developer myself who has run his own servers, even the cheapest, $5/month shared server can handle hundreds of requests per second.

Insidiously the limit doesn't apply just to what you might think of as searches. It isn't that I am typing things in the Search box and searching for various things all of the time. Instead, certain links on the home page are considered by the site as "searches". For example, clicking the link for New Posts counts as a search, as does clicking my username and then in the menu clicking My Recent Posts.

I know this because the new site has forced me into that habit, in what I would consider a lesser experience. On the old site, the New Posts list included posts even if I had read the last post. It just was a list of the latest-replied-to threads, regardless of my personal interaction with them. On the new site, in what was surely meant as a personalization convenience, a thread will disappear from the New Posts list after I click it. This is inconvenient for my fallible human nature, wherein I often change my mind or otherwise want to read part of that thread again.

Often the thread is also one I have replied to at some point. So to get back to the thread, I quickly click My Recent Posts. But if I click My Recent Posts within 20 seconds after clicking New Posts, I get the message to please wait. This happens surprisingly often. Maybe I'm just fidgety :)

Anyway, I guess this is two complaints in one:

1. Please remove the time limit
2. If possible, make New Posts like the old site, where it shows threads even that I have read.*

* Actually that's not totally true. The old site's New Posts list was based on my interaction, but it was cached for like an hour. So I had an hour to click around New Posts before it "got wise" and decided it didn't think I wanted to see those posts anymore. Regardless, the simplest solution is often best, and I think we all would just need a mere list of the most recent 100 posts (or even just 10) regardless of our own personal interaction with each thread.

Usually when software tries to get automatic and artificially intelligent and second-guess what I want, it's worse. This was true with Clippy, back in the days of Window 95, and it is just as true today.

I changed search timeout interval from 20 sec to 5 sec.

Sounds like you are looking for TODAY'S POSTS which shows posts from last 24 hours to a non-logged in / guest user. I will see about creating a new search option for new posts.

Thanks. That has always been an irritant.
