Sandwich cutting: vertical or diagonal

Totally not trying to create disharmony and chaos here, but do you cut your sandwiches vertically or diagonally and why?

I think the bigger question is, why does anyone ever cut a sandwich? Unless it's for a kid with small hands. But as an adult? Is it really so much easier to grip half of a sandwich instead of a whole one? I have medium size hands and I have never come across this issue. Or is it just a way to convince oneself that you might not eat the whole thing in one sitting? Yeah, right. Not me!

How on earth are you going to avoid eating the crust if you can't cut it in half? This is why pizza is cut as well. It's about crust avoidance.

Another political sand trap from Coughlin...
I figure if my topic can get John Brawley banned then I can start targeting other respected forum members like Charles Papert and Mitch Gross, until eventually all the respected forum members are banned leaving, well, me, the most respected forum member. Even JPNola will love me then because there won't be any other people left to love.

Anyway, anyone notice how Donald Trump and Joe Biden cut their sandwiches?

I’ve become used to UK/US differences so I thought I’d try this vertical thing but I have wrecked a whole loaf. My loaf was 125x125mm and as it was sliced, each one is 9mm thick. I’ve tried doing it vertically so I get 4.5mm slices, but either my knife is dull or it’s me. I now have crumbs. What am I doing wrong?

If you play cricket and have cucumber sandwiches - then the ladies (never the players, always partners or girlfriends) make the refereshments at local and county matches. The rules are strict. Thinly sliced whit bread, crusts on and ALWAYS cut diagonally. No cricket team sandwich maker would dare to offer four sided food. Ever.

100% correct Squire! And strongly supported by a study performed by the Department of Culinary Science at The University of Vermont :)

"In every single category, people vastly preferred all three cut sandwiches to the uncut sandwich, but the diagonally-sliced sandwich was the standout winner against its competitors."

Totally not trying to create disharmony and chaos here, but do you cut your sandwiches vertically or horizontally and why?

The implicit marginalization of an entire demographic (those who cut their sandwiches diagonally) is disturbing, and I have reported this entire thread to the moderators.

That was actually a typo. "Horizontal" was meant to be "diagonal" and I got my terms wrong. It has been remedied but I'm sure the horizontal advocates will now be out for blood.

I pan-fry my pizzas. I love the crust.

Being from the Detroit area, crusts are kind of the thing our pizzas are known for. But for some reason that has recently turned into this all corner thing. Which is weird to me. I usually avoid the corner pieces because I only want some crust. So it was strange to me to find out people wanted pizzas with all corners and even stranger they were calling it Detroit style.

This is a Detroit style pizza to me. Jet's Pizza (large square). In this case a tasty Chicken Parm. I'll take one of those middle pieces.

I have answered this before. The correct way to cut a sandwich is as follows. Do the math, this cut gives you an extra 10% more sandwich....THEcorrectSandwichCut.gif

The diagonal cut allows one to insert a pointy end into one's mouth, thereby avoiding condiment-scrape on the sides of the mouth opening, a real issue when faced with a flat wall of sandwich. One must think like and engineer when considering the proper geometry of sandwiches.

And then there's this.
