"FALLING UP" a Flyin' Monkey Films production

Puck, I thought the concept was phenomenal. Just a few things:

I noticed the ADR, and I think it took away from the performance of the actors. The opening scene with the camera moving is great, but then the films pacing drags as the opening credits begin. Opening credits for a short shouldn't be that long I think, it would be better if you just got right into the movie and started at the door, or just cut some of that out altogether. You got the music right most of the time, but in some scenes it was stealing the spotlight.

Keep up the good fight! :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I gotta address this one: there were no opening credits. every scene there added to the movie, setting up the characters and the situation. Without the notes on the ceiling, and around the apartment, you have no idea of what his life is like and the adjustments he;s having to make. The opening credits just go over those parts. There is absolutely nothing to cut from there.

I know you've been beaten up about the ADR, and if it weren't for that, this would be a very charming piece. If you DO ever need ADR in the future. AT LEAST record it in a room, or THE room it was shot in. It sounds like a VO booth.

Ok, now I'm done venting. :)

I really like how you shot and edited this one. The girl is too cute and so likable. He's likable too. Just like in KOTL, nice colors and lighting all around.

The only thing I was missing was a good shot of the falling up. We never saw his whole body when flying, and I think when you take on a concept like this, you have to deliver the payoff. It's an unwritten contract you sign with the audience. Of course we will know it's fake, nobody can fly. (Except my dude in Again to return :) he he) One easy way you might've done it is to mount a ceiling fan or light fixture on the wall so it looks like a ceiling, then had him stand there like he's stuck up there. Better yet, stand him on the dolly and you can "float" him up and down. Movie magic buddy.

You busted out two cool concepts, and I commend you for that, big-time. This one felt like a 90 minute movie compressed into 6, and that made it hard to buy the whole, "I'm mad at you and I storm off, then later forgive you when you're in a silly predicament" thing. If you could sell the flying, this could be a feature, easy.

Way to go!

Next time, I'd love to see one movie, only one entry, where you have 1) great audio, 2) trim the fat off your script, 3) use that cute girl again :Drogar-Love(DBG):, and 4) do everything else like you have been. You'll have a winner. Cheers my friend!:beer:

You can bet we'll see Jessica again, but she might not be as cute next time around. We're trying out new looks and characters for her, even some where she is not so much in the foreground. This fest is definitely my last double entry and I;ll be able to focus much more time and resources on getting everything as perfect as possible.

I promise, any more effects and you'll have the payoff. This is solemnly swear.

Thanks for the honest review and glad you were able to see the quality of the work despite the ADR problems.

Rodney:

Just watched this and I loved it! It's got a real sense of style, something that was lacking from my entry. There's something very carefree and natural about the acting, the look, the music.

The ADR didn't bother me at all. Does that make me nuts? I don't know, it just seemed to fit in just fine with the feel of the movie.

I loved the acting! Jessica was great!

Definitely do another comedy. You certainly have the talent for it!

I learned quite a bit by watching this movie, and would like to emulate some of the techniques in my future work.

I can't vote so it doesn't matter what I think. Not that you care but I will, of course, give my opinion anyway.
Some of your pictures are really beautiful. You use the Cinevate to really good effect, although that's probably pretty common on dvxuser (I’m new around these parts). I love those things. I wish I could afford one. That said it’s worth mentioning that your shot composition is really nice.

Apparently enough folks have mentioned the ADR problems so no need to dwell on that.
I didn't read all the comments but has anyone mentioned that the aspect ration is kinda strange? It struck me as me as odd. Maybe extra long pictures are the cool thing these days and I'm just not one of the hip kids...so if that's the case just proceed with your odd long pictures and take no notice of this comment. (I work in educational television and we still work in 4X3 - 16X9 is still a kinda new and exciting thing to me).

Finally, I liked the story a lot. It was cute, concise and effective. It has likeable characters, a funny story (in a romantic comedy way), and a good ending. Really, it has all the things you could want in a short and barring the distracting audio and (I think) odd aspect ratio, it’s a slam dunk. Great job, seriously.

I think I would have enjoyed this movie a little if the sound would have been ok.
The beginning was awesome!

Puck, Puck, Puck, what the ... Just kidding, that was so much fun. One of the few entries that I'd love to see a full length feature on. The ADR, though a little off, actually gave it a special charm that helped instead of hurt. Love the shooting and love the performances, keep yourself outside the box, can't wait to see more from you.

This kind of humor is very refreshing, which is fortunately not too flat. The Idea of the story is hilarious. Compliments and go ahead with your work. I love to see more of it.

Thanks for the feedback John. I'm recently getting into the groove with my filmic style, so I'm glad it's coming across well. You have a great style as well and it will be cool to see how it grows.

Jessica is just loving all of the compliments, especially since she never believed me when I tld her how good her performance really was. Silly girl thought I was saying it to make her feel good. Tsk.

One of the things I did on this movie that may be useful, especially in terms of style, was to do a quick walk through with the camera once the blocking was done, just one logn shot all handheld. I used that as my master and went back and viewed it in terms of editing. A lot of it was rough, but it did allow me to see what was really htere and make noters on specific shots that I hadnt thought of in storyboarding.

Thanks Chad, next one is definitely out of the box.

Thanks suzanne. Glad you could make it and very glad you enjoyed it. I hope it provided some chuckles for you.

It's a lot better with the audio fixed. Really a shame you caught it too late.

I have much sadness. When I export to H264 from Adobe Media Encoder, the audio is way off. When I export as a quicktime file and then export to h264 from Quicktime Pro... the file is perfect.

UGH. MAJOR UGH

Puck, that's more like it. A lot better than the ADR. I'm sure a dedicated sound person will put your mind at ease. Just make sure he or she knows what they are doing.

This time, after watching FALLING, I get the impression that you really enjoy making films.

it's an obsession... but a good obsession. besides what other kind of artist gets to have this much fun?

You are spot on. This is fun stuff.

The two orthodontists I collaborated with on my LOSS entry are dying to do another. They say it pales the work they do in every sense. I told them they have to sit this round out. They are depressed to say the least, but I'm sure they will get over it. :)
