"FALLING UP" a Flyin' Monkey Films production

You had an interesting premise. You nearly pulled it off, too.

I found the ADR so distracting, though, it was impossible to keep my attention on what you were doing. In some places the sync was not even close. It's also hard to say anything about the acting since most of the time the emotions you were able to achieve with the ADR didn't feel live...the felt read.

But on the plus side, it was an original concept.

somewhere in the compression the sound got screwed up even and misaligned completely. I'm NOT that bad with aligning ADR. I;d thought that people were complaining about the sound mix (which is way too clean) but mein GOTT! no wonder people are complaining.

I liked this one. The sound was a little funky in some places, but overall it was well shot and directed. Sometimes the music overpowered the dialogue, and sometimes the music didn't really fit the mood of the scene, but, again, overall it was very well done.

Cool concept with this one! Decent acting and way to keep our attention even though there's a lot of talking. Didn't quite feel the technicals were as good as your other entry, but I may have liked this one more due to story and concept.

Thanks for sharing.

Dammit Geoff: you're exposing me! I merely HID all the talking and now I'm outed! Now I'll have to find another way to distract people from the fact that there is a heck of a lot of talking going on.

Thanks for the review. Some of the technical aspects were definitely different on this one, mainly because it's a different kind of film than what I usually produce. "Keeper of the Lost" was more in line with my usual movie making sensibilities, but for Falling Up I was definitely learning and rethinking every single shot. It may have made for a slightly disjointed viewing style and a darker mood than I wanted.

Definitely points to consider.

But it's good talking! :)

To add... it's always good to have different styles of production. Versatility is a directing strong point, to adapt to the script and needs of the story and compliment it thoroughly. In that regard I think you definitely succeeded as both of these films have a different feel to it and each compliments the needs of their own story rather well.

Thanks. Dunno if I'll do another comedy again though... This one was quite a challenge, especially trying to keep it light and REAL at the same time. After the first edit when I sat and watched everything together I just sat and shook my head because it seemed I had ventured closer to drama than I had intentioned.

I don't think I could ever write a comedy in the vein of "Brand New Kitty" or "Losers in Excess", or even direct one. I'd end up throwing away half of the script because for every line of dialog, i always ask myself "why". I can't lose myself in the idiocy of a situation. Every line has to be motivated and serve a purpose (either of advancing the plot or developing character), and it was hard to put in lines just for a laugh.

Tell you man: setting up a joke and then hitting the punchline in 3-4 lines of dialog/action is HARD, so kudos to those guys for bringing the funny.

I'm trying more for the kind of humor that will mug you in the middle of the night, hours or days later when you least expect it, and next time you see a balloon or the Macy's Day Parade, you'll smile fondly at a distant memory.. and hopefully find yourself cracking up while everybody around stares and wonders if you've lost your mind.

Puck,

Great concept! As for the camera movement, there was one dolly shot or steady cam where the lead actor is at the computer at the beginning of the shot. He ends up answering the door at the end. It was a well blocked shot, good job. I might of changed a few thing in the shots, but it help tell the story. Best camera move I have seen so far.

Good Film.

I liked the setup for this early on, gave me a few chuckles right off the bat.
Rodney, you seem to be improving every Fest and that's what I really like to see. I'm sure you will take what you have learned from this Fest and wow us even further next Fest.

What I really liked about this one was the story/writing. That and the fact that you were able to fake the flying effect with some good old fashioned creativity.

Good luck in the Fest!

Thanks Adam. That particular shot gave us a bit of trouble to do and we must have filmed it about 9 times before I was satisfied. The blocking kind of grew over each of those shots since I knew I wanted movement, and in this one case was only able to articulate what I needed to see and when... as the scene progressed.

Thanks Mike. Means a lot that you can see my growth. I guess all thshis practice is finally paying off. Now gotta solve one final equation of sound, and start cranking out some more thought provoking and cool looking films...
