Short film. Let the cutting down begin!

Ryan,
I thought that was great! Good look to it, hard to shoot that night stuff and make it look right. You got me at all the right spots. Good stuff. Don't be so hard on yourself. What preset, etc?
Bill

really nice.... very cinematic great shots.. felt like a real film. I'm from Las Cruces. Good to see there is some talent hanging out in that town to make it entertaining... nice job.

Thanks Bill! I didn't use any presets actually. All flat, then did post work of course.

pretty sick.

What adapter and settings did you use?
I used the Letus Extreme. Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. No presets in camera. Thanks.

Thanks man! Oh yeah. If your ever back in town we should hang out and film.haha.

I thought this was excellent. It really looked like a real film. I loved the subtle camera moves. And I liked that you didn't go crazy with the shallow depth of field. It didn't scream "I'm using an adapter" like many digital movies do. Nice work.

haha thanks man!

If you want some minor criticism, some of the sound effects seemed heavy-handed, ie. when he's pumping gas. (door slam, lifting pump) I am listening thru headphones though...

Something doesn't seem right around 4:57 There seems to be some crossing of the line, ie. both characters are framed up on the left. Left me confused...in a sense it feels like they are both in front of the counter, rather than the cashier being behind.

I think overall, everything needs to be cut down, the shots go way too long. Not they they don't look nice, but it's overkill in regards to telling the story.

That being said, the adapter is nice, and you got some great nightime shots, which is no easy task, I'm sure. It's nice to have a location like this at your disposal. If I may ask, what kind of lights did you use for the interiors?

The shot around :49 is great, with the moon, everything is glowing.

Nice work, solid .
but I do agree with snacksack and deepfocus,
a few cuts are distracting .It's way better the the 48th hour.
The shot at 3:20 @ the gaspump was that also shot with the xha1 ?

I always wanted to do a movie with a french title , is it hard coming up with a french title ? :)

Overall there is nothing really bad about this, although I agree with some of the previous criticisms.

I would say that it is a little long in the set-up, but be careful not to cut it down too much because it could kill the rising suspense.

The clerk's dialogue was hard to hear. I do like your sound design though. You used silence very well and the tinny distant radio added a nice dimension to the sound without being overbearing.

Cinematography was nice. A few parts had some soft focus issues. You said you used an adapter so I'm going to assume you had your lens on a very shallow DOF setting. The opening jib shot was great. A little bit of the wiggles at the end of the movement but overall a really smooth boom down. I know how it is with cranes/jibs, mine does the same thing sometimes towards the end of a movement. What brand of camera crane did you use?

Your film worked well as a short piece. I would just try to tighten it up a little, especially in the beginning.

Thank you! I really appreciate your input. Definitely will help out in all my future work. Lights was all natural. I had no lights. Thanks once again.

Haha you watched "the 48th Hour"?
Yeah, that shot was with the A1. The whole short is an A1.:)
And as for french title no it wasn't hard. I mean i speak a little french and all my influences in films (Cinematographers,Directors, films, etc) are French. So i've watched quite a few subtitled French films. :)

Thank you. The dolly is a home made dolly on PVC track. As well as the crane. Can't afford the brand name systems haha.

Cool, but did you make your crane out of PVC as well? That seems like it would be unwieldy.

A lot of the lower priced cranes are a bit overrated in my opinion. Probably better to save until you can get a really good one someday, or rent a good one when you need to.

haha no. I wouldn't dare perch my A1+LEX on unstable PVC pipe 15 high haha.
We used very strong aluminum.

I don't use cranes a whole bunch but when i do i probably will want to rent one just to get that extra touch. :) no wobble either haha.

really enjoyed this. yeah, the age thing will always pop up...and i guess it's not relevant to the discussion, but i always wondered how you young guys aquire these fine instruments...i don't remember ever having money until i was well out of college haha
