SINAMON PRODUCTIONS presents "FALLING"

Hey Susanne! Thanks for your review! I guess you meant 180° :D Yes, I did! But I think I didn't use puzzle elements from other films. I had no other films in mind actually. And the good thing about filmmaking is, you can change for every film.

I have to admit I am very late, but you are right 180°. Very embarassing on my side using an expression on a wrong way! 1:0 for you. :Drogar-Thinking(DBG :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG :Drogar-KnockedOut(D

Susanne :)

Nice job Simon. I was actually surprised at the amount of action and how well it was pulled off.

Like some others, I'm not sure I fully followed it, but it was an entertaining ride!

Hey man,

Just caught the flick. I thought this was a very fun entry. Lots of good stuff in here. The location was great. You got a horse???? Very very cool. The FX worked pretty well. The leg cutting and gun shots I liked. Maybe some better foley work on the gun shots, but otherwise I dug the FX.

For my money, the "claw" of the guy's chest didn't feel real. Maybe it was the amount of blood on it or maybe it was the fact that whenever he touched it he didn't seem to be hurting but rather running the motions of being hurt, so that didn't work for me.

Also, what is going on with your lead character? Not the acting but the story. I don't think we learn or know anything about him (aside from the fact that he doesn't think he needs help) and in the end he had his eyes opened? I don't think I caught the significance of that as it pertains to either him or the story.

Otherwise, I also loved the music and the make-up. Great stunt work a nice look to the piece. The story just left me a little dry. But thanks for showing and it's fun to see the difference between this piece and No Air. Can't wait to see your next piece.

Hey guys,
just came back from a short holiday in holland over the weekend. Will reply to the reviews tomorrow. Thanks alot already :)

Man, have to catch up watching and rating all the entries. But I am quite far already. So it should be no problem to finish. And then I can comment on them after the deadline.

Yep I think with this film the let down is primarily with the story, however not enormously so but just in comparison to the great visuals and slick action!

I enjoyed this film, its one of the few i've come back and watched a few times - it has a clasic Hofer girl close up too! I'm going to have add one of those to mine i think (you romantic hofer...)

For me the FX ect was excellent, someone mentioned the claw effect not looking as real (i don't know personally it didnt raise an eyebrow with me!)

So it works overall, the VO if taken out, would let this piece act as a great promo for a post apocalyptic er vampire/demon movie ;)

So Hofer your maintaining a good standard of filmmaking imo (this and your Timefest entry Aetas were excellent.)

Thank you for all the praise! :) I have to correct you a little bit though. You seem to confuse me with "Shawnous", the director of "Aetas".

My timefest entry was "No Air" (Got no romantic closeup btw :D). But I take that as a compliment, because "Aetas" was a nice film aswell :)

Carrying on the tradition from Timefest, the AIM sessions have returned, a live stream of whatever may come out of our heads as we watch your films. Here are Ben Sliker and Brad Mates thoughts on "Falling."

11:50:08 PM Ben Sliker: alright falling.
11:50:11 PM Ben Sliker: rdy?
11:50:14 PM Brad Mate: yep

11:50:34 PM Brad Mate: i keep forgetting what site to go to tho.
11:50:39 PM Ben Sliker: it is teh awesome.
11:50:52 PM Brad Mate: ugh, abrasive narrating voice
11:51:03 PM Brad Mate: ....
11:51:12 PM Ben Sliker: FLYING HORSES AND shi*, now that's scary
11:51:18 PM Brad Mate: pwned
11:51:22 PM Ben Sliker: bad ass skin effects.
11:51:38 PM Brad Mate: we're two wild and crazy guys!!!
11:51:46 PM Ben Sliker: HEY HEY
11:52:15 PM Ben Sliker: no choice huh? ... he actually gave you a choice there ...
11:52:21 PM Brad Mate: lol
11:52:38 PM Brad Mate: the music is a bit much
11:52:43 PM Ben Sliker: this is so ridiculous
11:52:54 PM Brad Mate: and by ridiculous you mean awesome
11:53:00 PM Ben Sliker: LOL
11:53:07 PM Ben Sliker: UNNECESSARY ROLL.
11:53:32 PM Ben Sliker: LOOK. ZEE GERMANS! ZEE GERMANS!
11:53:59 PM Brad Mate: quick! before ze germans get here!! wait...we are the germans!! *high five*
11:54:10 PM Brad Mate: wtf
11:54:22 PM Ben Sliker: KILL HIM!
11:54:22 PM Brad Mate: oh snap
11:54:34 PM Brad Mate: you just got poo pooed the f up
11:54:46 PM Ben Sliker: i never knew it hurt so much to tap someone with an axe.
11:54:54 PM Brad Mate: LAME LAST LINE
11:54:57 PM Brad Mate: GOOD GOD
11:55:10 PM Brad Mate: ooo witkam music
11:55:58 PM Ben Sliker: i had something ...
11:56:05 PM Ben Sliker: my mind went blank
11:56:09 PM Ben Sliker: derailed.
11:56:10 PM Brad Mate: i enjoyed this film. but i cant help feel disappointed by what it could have been. it had great things slammed against awful thigns.
11:56:56 PM Brad Mate: it looked good, but the editing between scenes didnt feel right. especially with the music it really felt stilted
11:57:26 PM Brad Mate: and the narration made it like a trailer instead of a short which was how it played out
11:57:28 PM Ben Sliker: yeah, it was definitely treading the line between bad-funny and bad-bad sometimes.
11:58:29 PM Ben Sliker: with all of the rest of the effects rocking so hard, i was really disappointed with the axe hit.
11:58:52 PM Brad Mate: yea i was expecting a lot more. at least make the swing better. that was really lame
11:59:17 PM Ben Sliker: just use a plastic bat ... you can beat someone all day and they'll only get severly bruised ...
11:59:43 PM Brad Mate: lol exactly
11:59:50 PM Brad Mate: they're just actors for god's sakes
12:00:49 AM Ben Sliker: alright, that's all i got in me.
12:00:57 AM Brad Mate: k

If this AIM session doesn't make much sense Simon, it's because Brad and I went back and forth between bouts of "AWESOME!" and "WTF?" while watching your film. It was absurd, over the top, ridiculous, and we loved it. We wished that the whole thing was absurd and for a more pleasing axe hit. Regardless, good work.

Very nice. Good to get some action and blood going in this fest. Great FX, nice location, engaging actors, cool stunts. It's an ambitious undertaking and it turned out well. Kudos to you and your team on a well made brass tacks action/horror flick. Great job!

Thanks a bunch!

Wow simon. I just stumbled upon this short and I have to say I'm really impressed. The action was very well directed and your fx work was really good too. I thought you had a very ambitious idea and for the most part actually managed to pull it off.

It was a really enjoyable little short! I could nit pick technically but this shows huge potential in the way it was shot, the beats, the edit, very nice.

Herman's score is outstanding and really adds to this piece.

I like a director who doesn't mind throwing himself around a bit in the name of art ;-) well done.

Thanks for your thorough review!

This was one of the first ones I watched and you delivered the goods!

I was constantly saying, "Cool... awesome...etc" The look of it was great. Lots of nice shots, and of course as everyone has been saying, the FX and stunts were rockin', and the best of the fest IMO.

The only thing I didn't get was why they had to get to the bridge? Was this some magical bridge or something?

Music and sound was excellent, as expected.

Great job. Very entertaining!

Thank you :) Well, the meaning of the bridge was left out intentionally.

very well done, production wise, lot of good camera work imo. just thought the story was not quite understandable (just my brain perhaps).

:dankk2: Well, not much story going on... but this film is not made because of a great story :D

Simon... I'm not sure I got it, but I dug the look of the film. Definitely in the pile to watch again.

Then again, "No Air" was 'out there' too

congrats on entering the fest.
/j

Thank you Justin! Going to leave out the next fest though, I think...

Lots of cool things going on here. Loved the stunts, the special effects, the sound. Very entertaining all the way through. The pace lagged a little near the end as he messes with the angle and the other guy climbs the bridge, but this is a minor nit pick. I think the story lacked a little bit in strength- all fairly ambiguous. However, you made up for it in gore, fighting and fun.

Thanks for sharing your movie with us.

JC
Glad you enjoyed and were entertained. Achieved my goal!

Very good film, different than all the rest as far as story goes and some really great stunts and special effects. I loved the fight scenes and the movie as a whole. Great Job!
I always try to be different, thanks man!

I have to admit I am very late, but you are right 180°. Very embarassing on my side using an expression on a wrong way! 1:0 for you.

Susanne

Hehe, don't worry Susanne, will be forgotten soon.

Nice job Simon. I was actually surprised at the amount of action and how well it was pulled off.

Like some others, I'm not sure I fully followed it, but it was an entertaining ride!
Thanks Neal! I achieved my goal when you were entertained!

Yeah, I am not completely happy with the wound either. Something to improve the next time.

Also, what is going on with your lead character? Not the acting but the story. I don't think we learn or know anything about him (aside from the fact that he doesn't think he needs help) and in the end he had his eyes opened? I don't think I caught the significance of that as it pertains to either him or the story.

Well, as said before, the story is not the strongest part of my film :D

Otherwise, I also loved the music and the make-up. Great stunt work a nice look to the piece. The story just left me a little dry. But thanks for showing and it's fun to see the difference between this piece and No Air. Can't wait to see your next piece.

Hey Daniellus, thank you for this really thorough review!

I enjoyed the CC and FX quite a bit. Good work, Simon, and good luck!
Thanks man!

hehe - You must have had pretty bad weather over there :)

Well, actually the weather was quite good. It only rained on the last day, so we were really lucky :) Was great to regenerate. Especially for my eyes... not staring at a screen is sometimes quite good.

From the first appearance of the "dvxuser" bumper I was enthralled by the score. Herman once again has hit one out of the park. Amazing score from start to finish. Beautiful work.

I know most people commenting haven't dug the VO, but my quibble is mainly the content. Starting out with a somewhat trite and ironic "It was definitely not Frank's best day ..." really made me expect something campy and possibly comedic. I think it does a disservice to what is an amazing heavyweight production. I do get the fact that this is a slice of something bigger. However, I think a VO at the outset could set that up nice for the viewer and avoid confusion on the part of those expecting a turnkey plot. I'd recommend an opening narration that is more enigmatic and serious ... one that clearly implies that entire acts of this film have already taken place.

Opening scene with the horse: OMFG!!!!!!!!!!! I had to get clean pants after she dismounted and I saw those effects. Absolutely the best scene of the whole fest. Seriously. What an opening. I see that you are going to comment about VFX soon and I would request that you send me a PM when you do because I'm anxious to hear! Beautiful work. Simply beautiful.

Then we get to the first battle and I'm out of control! I'm yelling at the screen "F*ck yeah!" I was stunned with how great this is on so many counts. The editing is paced wonderfully and the VFX of her falling/being shot are incredible.

I liked the guy's accent a lot and especially liked the little touch of him blowing the barrel of his pistol. Great line ... "Yeah ... you would have kicked her ass in a minute." Fabulous. But, as I mentioned, in my first viewing the VO had me thinking this was going to be totally campy and the humor of his "I told you beeetch ..." and this exchange twisted my expectations that direction so that the rest of the film was last satisfying when you didn't inject more humor.

No need to tell you how much I'm in awe of these locations. Jeeeez Louieeeeez, this is an incredible sumptuous production. I know that you have specifically said that you blew off the story intentionally to focus on the aspects of the project important to you. However, I'm going to kick your ass if the next fest does not concentrate on story, dude, because this would be competing for the big prize, in my opinion, if you had crafted a complete story arc. Your camera work, editing, score, stunts, VFX and grading are top drawer. I cannot say enough about how impressed I am with you, Simon. This is simply an amazing piece of work.

Great leg chop off dude! Whoa. Once again you have really pulled out all the stops.

Would have preferred seeing a different shot for them emerging from the deep forest rather than the reverse with so much bright sky. Feels like you're shooting at a different time of day and in a different location rather than conveying that they are coming out of a dark forest. Minor point, but I was so into your location and the dark lighting that I think a better transition would help between these scenes.

You astound me with your physical stunts dude. I want to push you off a cliff just to see you fall.

The transformation of your guy into the 'monster' is incredible. That you did this on a few hundred dollars is astounding. You need to get your reel together and go make some serious bucks shooting commercials dude. I had no idea you were this accomplished at VFX.

The reveal of the girl with the axe is priceless. I'm yelling at the screen again; "HOT DAMN!"

Just a slight disconnect for me in that she does this great windup and with the guy in the foreground we're quite oriented in space so that we know she needs to take another step to bring that sucker into his skull. However, you cut to the impact and we get none of the delivery of the blow. Your "strike" shot is a lockdown so I would have loved to see you rig something up for her to actually strike and then composite in the dude. He's completely motionless so it would have totally worked and I think people would have gasped to see her physical motions as the blade actually impaled something. Still totally works for me, but I just would love to have seen the actual blow through that means or another.

Pretty nice particle effect when she pulls the blade out.

All in all this was astounding, Simon. You are ready for the major leagues with your production values.

And, no dammit, I haven't found the socket yet. Don't give that away yet. I want to find it on my own.

DO give a VFX breakdown, though. I am very enthused to see that. Gorgeous work.

Herman did an amazing job! It adds so much to the film! I was listening to the Pirates of the Carribian soundtrack all the time while editing and working on the VFX. So i was really thrilled when I got Hermans score!

Interesting thoughts you've got here Mark. There are so many things I would change now.

Will do so. Going to post a bit about the VFX soon. It is not that complicated, but alot of work, because it is repetitive. Took me like forever. Lots and lots of motion tracking and masking.

Then we get to the first battle and I'm out of control! I'm yelling at the screen "F*ck yeah!" I was stunned with how great this is on so many counts. The editing is paced wonderfully and the VFX of her falling/being shot are incredible.

Definitely one of my favorite scenes :) Especially proud of that!

I will only enter the next fest if I am completely confident that my story is strong. And you've got every right to kick my ass if the story is not any good :D

Once again a very good eye Mr. Johnson. Definitely something to improve.

You astound me with your physical stunts dude. I want to push you off a cliff just to see you fall.

Haha, you didn't even see the really cool stuff :D I'm working on a "Trinity wallflip" right now. Look this youtube link at 1:20min. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dgutDMPIMU&feature=related Just without any wires :D

The problem is to implement stunts right into a film. And I actually don't wanna act myself. It was a disaster on this one. I was not prepared, because I had not time to do so. My delivery was aweful. I am so glad I could impove it with ADR a bit.

The transformation of your guy into the 'monster' is incredible. That you did this on a few hundred dollars is astounding. You need to get your reel together and go make some serious bucks shooting commercials dude. I had no idea you were this accomplished at VFX.

I wish I could dude! I would be all over it, but I think I am not experienced enough at all.

The reveal of the girl with the axe is priceless. I'm yelling at the screen again; "HOT DAMN!"

Coming soon.

The Dude

Thank you very very much for your review Mark! Much appreciated! You are the best :)

Hey, sorry I didn't get here sooner, but this one got one of my highest ratings so I wanted to make sure I dropped by.

Really liked this one. Sweet effects, cool look, and the slo-mo axe run was fantastic.

Loved it!

Thank you very much! I stilll have to comment myself on quite some entries...

Ok guys, I'll talk about the VFX work soon. But here is a small demo video I made to trick people into my production :D It consists of a stunt and VFX tests I did in the development stages of "Falling".

How it all started:

Because of this stunt I actually made "Falling". It made physically no sense, so I changed it to the bridge fall off later on. :D

I also wanted the axe hit sorta look like this, but it didn't work out on the shoot itself and later on we had no time to reshoot it.

Ok, here is a before and after picture:

1227105907.jpg
1227105923.jpg

Ok, here is a basic breakdown for what I did:

I tried to achieve a realistic looking disgusting skin. To achieve this it needed a somehow scarred surface. To get this look I had to attach a Texture to the faces and also curves/desaturation and such. This is a really painstaking proces that takes forever.

Here are some of the steps I did:

1. Motion tracking the faces:
Which is a pain in the ass, especially with quite some motion blur. And the characters were also moving ALOT! Turning their faces and such. Meaning I had to do multipe tracks. For the horse scene I made 3 different tracks. Almost every face track had to be adjusted and tweaked by hand. Quite a few were completely made by hand.

2. Masking:
You may think, now that I've got the tracking, so I can just make a mask and stick it to the track. Far way from reality. This is where the fun starts. The mask on the face is in almost every single frame different. Yes, I animated about 70% of the masking frame by frame by hand.

3. Texture:
I took the texture and applied lots of CC. I used Displacement mapping to make it look like it's really on the face. I used CC glas to get a kind of 3D look of the texture. And I also used lots of CC on the face itself. Contrast and desaturation.

Here is a screenshot of the Project above:

Another example:
1227107889.jpg

Similar technique, just some additional tweaking on the texture and CC. This one was also a ***** to mask, because of his hair flying all over the place.

This is the texture I used:

Sorry if it's a bit messed up guys, but that's how it is :D

Hey Simon,

That was pretty much how I thought you pulled off the effects. I was hoping you had found some other less painful technique! Thus, I'm really impressed with your devotion. You know, the guy who is really the rotoninja is Nate Caauwe and I hope he comments. I've always suspected Nate has some secrets involving roto-splines and tracking that would make this less of a chore. Perhaps he can enlighten all of us.

GREAT work. Truly truly outstanding. Your tracking was superb and the first time I saw this film I realized you had VFX chops beyond what I ever dreamed you did. ... now where's the friggin socket. I am tired of looking!
