64 gb P2 Card

Hi guys,

While I could not say exactly what the read write number is on CF cards, there is a read write number on all memory. And it looks at when the card is full and then emptied. So if you are typically only recording half a card, and the read write limit was 40, it would feel like 80 because it looks at filling the card for a complete cycle. On the P2 card it is 100,000 cycles, so pretty much it will be a big surprise when it finally gives up the ghost and won't record anymore.

I tend to look at the price of the card on a per usage basis. If you reocrd only once and put it on the shelf, that is pretty expensive. If on the other hand you record 100 times ona card that costs $900, that card is now $9, record 1000 times and it is $.90. And because it is equipment it can be included in the lease package.

All the best,

Jan

Hey Jan,

Wouldn't Panasonic make a bigger profit if the price was lowered? I've been holding off becase of it. How much does it cost to make those things?

You really would be very surprised to know how little we make from the cards. I could make more money delivering newspapers. Ha Ha.

The cards are assembled by hand and there are 5 QC points in the process. The are made in a clean room, and if you don't know this, a clean room is very hard to keep clean because people keep walking into it. I would post pictures but they told me I couldn't take the picture I was about to take. Point is that they are pretty expensive to make, but in comparison to tape, they are so much more environmentally GREEN, you would't believe it. There is a study being done right now, that is looking at the manufacture of tape vs solid state.

So yesterday one of the guys came back from Japan and he had with him a 64GB card. First time I have seen one. It was highly coincidental that at the very same time I was walking around with a 64MB SD card in my hand testing out a set of files that I have made for metadata. Well at least I found it amusing. So I bought that card back in 2002 when I moved to NJ from LA. Don't you just love Moore's Law?

Best,

HD video production doesn't have to break the bank.

It doesn't. It just costs what it costs.

It may cost too much for a particular person or particular entity, but that doesn't mean it costs too much as a general matter.

If a particular system costs too much for you to use it, then it's probably just not the right system for you. Purchase something else which fits your needs.

That's why I use a Firestore drive.

I just think if the prices on the cards were dropped, more people would buy not just the cards, but the cameras. I've had many conversations with people who were interested in P2 cameras, but didn't care for the high cost of the cards, so they held off.

I'm no business expert, but if the price of cards drops significantly, I'm sure sales will increase and Panasonic will see a greater profit.

I'm sure if that were the case, then the people who actually get paid to make those kind of marketing decisions at Panasonic would have done so.

I really don't understand what ll this kvetching is all about.

I bought ALL of my P2 cards used when the new ones came out. A lot of people dropped their 8s for 16s, 16s for 32s. Etc. So did I.

Like others have said, if you haven't considered the cost of the media when you bought the camera, then maybe you bought the wrong camera, regardless of make or model.

Me, I pass the cost along to my customers over the course of the life of the camera. That's what smart business people do.

Have you factored in the cost of a DVCProHD deck?

Because when you consider the fact you don't need the deck nor expensive dvcproHD tapes, the p2 cards seem less expensive everyday.

Good point. We have two 1200s and a 1400 at the office and they are not cheap. Also, buy a few cases of DVCProHD 126 tapes and then tell me if P2 is expensive ;-) Pro tape formats are expensive!

64Gig cards officially on Panasonic Switzerland website

Price is 2'900 Swiss Francs ex. VAT. That is about 2'500US$.
But the street price will be much lower than that because it always is with Panasonic Switzerland :-)

I'm just sticking with my Firestore until the P2 prices drop....a lot.

Yes, I would probably buy a 64 GB card in that price point or two 32's at 1/2 that...

And I will wait until that day happens most likely.
