AG-HPX170 - Is It Real

Yea, I am really, really glad I held off buying the 200 - even the 200a, as I have no use for the tape drive.

Unless something negative crops up about the 170, this will be the perfect addition to our hardware lineup! And with the camera being smaller, smaller diameter glass, and no tape drive, I would be drop-jaw surprised if the 170 is not less money than the 200.

All true Brad, but it's eight months out or so.

That's ok. I think it's worth the wait. We have only had the 500's to work with since September and had to rent when we needed a hand-held. I can continue to rent until the 170 is out. (Although it will be a painful 8 months!:crybaby:)

it is still 7 months to go so they might implement it later. I would pay 300 USD more for the 170 if they would do it !!!!!

I think this might be where you get off the bus, David.
:)

So far all signs point to 'same ol' LCD.
And I can't help but think that if there were a higher res LCD she would have mentioned it as one of the 'highlighted' features.

According to an interview I saw with Jan, the price for the 170 is going to be the same for the 200a, $5995, list and the $5300 more or less street.

Interestingly, she said the 170 will have a flip function lcd for adapters, 3 focus assists (with the ability to manually turn the fa on and off), waveform, vetroscope, the ability to assign frame rates to user buttons, the ability to assign delete last clip to a user button, 6 pin firewire, HD-SDI ouput, cable lock hole.

Since both have the same chipset (better signal to noise ratio, 1/2 stop more latitude), you weigh those features vs. the ability to shoot tape at the same price point.

last note: I am not sure if the 200a has additional frame rates but the 170 definitely does.

Man, I just bought an HVX200. Anybody else here feeling buyer's remorse? Although I plan on using the tape deck until I can afford P2 cards, so I guess it wasn't a total waste.

Hi bosindy,
Yea, I saw the same interview. And they may very well choose to price them the same. But my guess is that Panny is not telling us everything regarding pricing, and my gut tells me the 170 will at least be moderately cheaper. But even if they are similarly priced, based on what I see in that camera, there is a 170 out there with my name on it!

If not an HPX500, this is the camera I'm grabbin' on the wait til Scarlet.

I'm very happy with everything I've seen reported from this camera, and it's exactly what I needed from Pana. Could've used a better LCD, but all things weighed this damned thing kicks ass. Not to mention all of us HVX200 owners can simply port over the accessories and keep shootin'. I'm very excited. =)

I know this has been asked, when did Jan say they were targeting release?

Yeah, I only wish they'd stuck with the 82mm lens.
The 170 has the same 72mm of the DVX.
But, that makes sense as I guess they're thinking people will jump from the DVX to the HPX170.

If I were a betting man I'd say the 200a is probably the last HVX we'll see.
Of course it's way too early to know for certain.

I remember I thought the same thing when I bought my last Mac.
I can edit 2K on it if need be... what more would I ever need?

Next thing I knew people were talking about RED and 4K footage....
still out of my league a bit - but it's a possibility.

Now this week we're talking about 3K footage for $3,000.
Amazing times we're living in right now.

That said - of all the news that's come out this week the 170 is definitely at the top of my list.
It will be the last camera I need to buy... until I buy the next one.
:)

It's cool for us Letus owners. All we need to do is grab the DVX ring and we're set. I do like the wider angle as well.

Plus, y'know... LESS NOISE AND MORE LATITUDE! Woot.

And not even that, the Latitude that existed but was unusable BECAUSE of the noise is regained, makin' this an even tastier purchase.

Add to THAT Barry reportin about a 500 ISO/ASA rating, snappin' the Ultimate or Extreme on gets us back to about 320/300 which is pretty darned good for an adapter setup. Gets better and better.

I think we should thank Jan who listened to all our wishes and translated (probably not proper English) them to panasonic development department. I think everybody is extremely happy with the specifications of the 170. Only thing missing is an improved LCD but that is more cosmetic since we have now 3 focus assist systems :-))) Can't wait untill the 170 hitts the marcket :-))

Jan did warn me to wait... and that all good things come to those who wait. I was to afraid to jump ship for the EX-1 because of it's mechanical issues. I'm glad I didn't.

Here's hoping for a September release date.

Well im still plugging away with a dual G5 and the trusty DVX cant wait to enter the world of tapeless without having to resort to a firestore. Was thinking about the 150 but now i dont think i want to be stuck with just the AVC codec.

Hey! Why's nobody talkin' about the 4:3 recording mode!!!

That's actually a really sweet deal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't this allow for some Anamorphic shooting? I think one concern with that was that you stretch pixels and lose resolution, but has it been tested?

That could be really awesome.
