Canon A1 $3,499

Im using Pana tapes in mine. Its the old stick to one brand thing and I had a bunch lying around from my DVX unused so I guess now I am stuck with them.

I know what you mean. I prefer to use the Panasonic MQ tapes but I already have 6 tapes worth of HDV footage shot with a Sony, on Sony Premium Mini DV tapes, so I will probably have to stick with the Sony.

Seems strange to record great HDV with a Canon A1 on a $3 Sony Premium MiniDV tape though...oh well. The tapes have been pretty good.

I've heard not to mix Sony Premium tapes and Panasonic MQ tapes, so I won't.

I'm pretty sure that current MIniDV tape formulations from both manufacturers are the dry kind now. I've used both Sony and Panasonic without problems, but for ultimate peace of mind it might make sense to stick with one or the other.

Or just get a Firestore and bypass the tape world entirely.

I am surprized to see you going Canon. But after checking it out it sounds great. Let us know how it works out for you. Go man-go!!!

Great advice!

So, when will the Firestore prices come down enough so it's not a joke anymore? Soon as we get 100GB for $400, we'll talk reality :)

C'mon with hard drives running at 30 cents a GB, these guys are in some serious need of competition. Yes, I appreciate that it's not just a hard drive, but c'mon... plus lower prices would enlarge the market explosively... they'll more than make up the slimmer margins with volume...

I'd love to get one, but sorry, I can't pay 25% the cost of the camera for 40GB... that's just totally unrealistic - and should be unnecessary in this age of storage prices going nowhere but down... something's screwy here.

Kind of feels like a chapter ending by moving out of the DVX. It was my first camera fully on my own and I learned so much with that camera. But now it's onto HD and the cool things to come! : )

Catch you around.

I couldn't agree with you more on this subject! I REALLY want a Firestore but it's so damn expensive, it kills me. Wish there was a way to hook up my external hard drive to the camera.

Why it's best to stick with B&H and avoid 1stopcamera.com

Thanks again, Coffee.

My camera shipped for $3518, and I expect it next Wednesday. Now all I need is to do is receive it and make sure the box is sealed! (And that it's a USA version as promised.)

All in all the transaction with 1stop was pretty easy, so far.

It's true that the camera has shipped, but something happened with FedEx Ground, (they lost my MacBook Pro so I'm out $2500), and now I can't afford the camera.

So I emailed 1stopcamera.com and was polite and all and basically asked if I could refuse the package I haven't even received yet, (giving them plenty of notice), or if I could send it back to them unused, (I said I'd be happy to pay for shipping, both ways), and all they replied back with was:

"Any refused or returned merchandise will incur a minimum 15% restocking fee."

Thanks, 1stopcamera.com.

I should never have strayed from B&H...

By the way if anyone wants a brand-new A1 for $3500 let me know. (I will post this in marketplace, too.)

That sounds confusing. What I'm saying is that even though I contacted 1stopcamera.com before my new A1 got here, they will not take the camera back without charging a 15% fee, no matter what, and will possibly charge more.

The fedex ground and macbook pro issue is something altogether different but it's the reason I can no longer afford the A1.

sorry to hear about your mac book loss.......

can u contact your credit card co and dispute the camera issue? just tell them something like you didn't order it but it was sent anyway....

fed x lost it they should be responsible for it.. also that is why you never ship anything without insurance

check with your state law sometimes you cant be charged a restocking fee unlesss its in writing somewhere on there site before ordering. i would call my card company on hold the payment put it in dispute

It wasn't up to me--it was a prepaid label provided by Apple that only covered it for $100. It was partly my fault though because it was a ground shipment that I dropped off at a FedEx Express box. I didn't realize it was a ground package, or that FedEx Ground and FedEx Express were totally separate.

As for calling the card company...1stopcamera.com makes you send them an email agreeing to the charge before they sell it to you.

Hey man that sucks, hope it'll work out in the end...
But that's indeed where a large amount of the extra money is going to with a really good company; the reassurance that they will take care of your problems and not the other way around.
