Sony Vs. Red? Sony's early response to Red?

Jim if you need me to I'll buy the Sony 4K under IMG Entertainment to throw Sony off. And then I'll drive it down and deliver it personally to you guys. You'll have to figure out how to get it over to Amsterdam or if you want me to I can get it over ther. You'll just have to wire me the cost of the projector to my account. I wont charge anything for the delivery or anything I'll just take it for the team. So let me know...

I would Love to see a RED 4k projector. Price it around $20,000 or maybe $5,000 just to piss Sony off. My home theater would rock. I would have to add a new wing to the house but thats tottaly cool for me.

IMO I think RED will deliver at IBC no matter what, I don't even doubt that, what I'm enjoying is the feeling of being in the front row of (unfolding as we speak!) cinema history. This is events are crucial to the film to digital transition and I can assure that lots of books will dissect what we are living today in the not so distant future. All of this even affects mass media, advertising and marketing history. Jim Jannard is teaching the world a lesson of how the internet (and the so called "viral" marketing) can be used as an alternative to marketing that can be free of missguided persuation and focus on facts rather than marketing hype. Again, Mr. Jannard, we salute you and your vision.

Now I'll have a shot of tequila in honor of Mr. Jannard and the RED team and what you are doing for this industry (specially the indies).

Salud!

Ok so here is what we are going to do. We are going to gather a crack pot team on here. Jarred has to come (we need the hight) Horse can play the drunk distraction, Mr. Blonde will try not to kill everyone at the end, and Briceman (He just looks like the kind of person that would be on a mission like this) He can also bring Jack Daniels Stanly with him. And we are going over there and jacking the 4k out of the IBC convention screening room. We will then relocate in an abandon warehouse on the out scerts of the RED light distric. Then we will spread the word about the screening by telling people to go to the red light distric after the show closes.(Not that that will be hard) and look for someone wareing a patch of the red logo on their arm, or tattooed on the back of there neck or something. Then we will have one hell of a screening. Then when no one shows up to Sony's booth in the morning and they hear about the amazing screening they will be so pissed. We will even have a graphic that says sponncered by Sony so they can't get to mad, we gave them credit for the projector.

Hey wores comes to worse I'll still say it could be done.
I thought something like theses mask would work out nicely.

What about NHK? They invent most of the stuff that Sony, Pana, etc, make...

They had UHDTV at NAB, what resolution is that? They might have some 4K gear.

Sony, if you be men/women of honor, clear your name! If not,...well...I never liked you anyway! So POO-POO on you! That's my mature, professional opinion on the subject!

NHK has 4320p that's equivalent to something like 8K or 7K. They invent most of the stuff that Sony and Panasonic make? What, high definition cameras? Well they did. Their UHD camera actually uses a CCD that is lower resolution than the Mysterium. It uses pixel shifting to make it to UHD. I am not sure if they got a 4k projector though.

You know, what you could do besides printing to 35mm is to print it to IMAX and show it in an external theatre in Amsterdam, I'm sure they have one, just rent it out for a day or two.

That would probably cost alot though and take a while, it'd have grain too.

I like the idea of the 2k projector, seeing as Superman was shot at that resolution. Also, Attack of the Clones was shot at 1440x1080 and I thought it looked great when I saw it digitaly projected.

Creating your own 4k projector would be great. You could even make a 2540p projector too. Dalsa would love it.

I just got caught up with all this...

Wow. If Sony is doing what it seems to be doing, then I think they're going to have some serious backlash, not to mention media exposure at their expense. I'm sure that the RED team will be able to pull through a stunt like this, though I wouldn't want to be in their shoes right now.

Not cool, Sony. Not cool.

Two things I do not understand:

* Why didn't Sony wait till the 7th with this announcement to give RED no time to work out an alternative?

* Why anybody here is surprised upon Sony's move? Do people have forgotten the ROOT KIT thing that happend here in Europe?

I think it would be better to wait for IBC and Sony's response to Red before pointing fingers anywhere.

Yes, it's interesting and has that whole cloak and dagger thing going on to feed the rumour mill, but personally I'll apply Occam's Razor until I hear the response from the Sony camp. Don't automatically attribute to malice that which can be explained by sheer incompetence :)

What I do know is you don't want your 150k camera smoked by a 17k one courtesy of your own projector.
Exactly.

I mean, what's in it for Sony? How do they win, by handing RED the rope they need to hang Sony by the neck?

Obviously pulling the plug is a bad PR move for them, and obviously in this Internet day and age it won't mean a thing -- it won't stop Red, it won't stop the story from getting around.

But I can see Sony doing something like this, I mean, if Rocketeer speaks the truth (and I have no doubt that he does), Sony was planning on introducing a $135,000 camera and were planning on showing the footage on their 4K projector. If RED comes in and shows better-looking footage from a camera that's 1/9 the price... well, how is it in Sony's interest to enable them to do so?

It's petty, yes. But I can see why they'd do it.

I believe Sony may be lashing out like a wounded animal. Their back is really against the wall, all across the board. Check out this article from Wired magazine, it's fascinating to see how the once-invincible Sony corporation is now, in Wired's view, betting the entire company on a strategy that probably isn't going to work.
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.09/sony.html

So is it conceivable that someone at Sony had had enough bad news, and finally said "ENOUGH!" and canceled Red's screening? Maybe.

Or, maybe it's a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing, and maybe all was well and good until someone higher up finally heard about it and said "are you crazy? cancel that!"

Either way, I have no doubt that Red's screening will go forward one way or another; if not at IBC then elsewhere.

But Barry, wouldn't more Red cameras mean more Sony 4k Projectors? If Sony cant sell there own cameras against Red, then they will be selling that many more projectors. And the projectors arent that cheap eiether. So why wouldnt Sony see that logic?

I prefer to think its just miscommunication...
