By the way are those 10mm rods?
10mm rods are generally way too thin and flexible.
15mm is the minimum size I would recommend for cinema accessories.

And what about using carbonfiber instead?
Per my ghetto scaling they seem to be even smaller than 14mm. More like 10mm. They may not have been thinking of using the cage bars for the lens support, I used them that way for convienience.

Nice Render! Now, this does show up how front heavy it will be. Time for a redesign of the cage, or a new one, that will allow for balanced shoulder mounting.

Yes, that was what my gettovision told me as well when coparing the size to the XLR connectors....

I took everyones comments and busted out another rendering for your viewing pleasure. This one doesn't look as good as the other, I think I lost the reflecty floor look somehow. Keep in mind that I'm a lowly Engineer type so my freeform modeling comes out a little choppy sometimes.

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! Shoulder mount, hand grips, eye-cup viewfinder towards the front. If this package could come it at under $30K, well, revolution indeed!

Sweet DUDE!! what program do you work with?

Also, how long does it take you to do this?

You should really consider making some parts for cameras or space ships!

:)

Love it..

George Lucas will buy a bunch.. Along with R2D2... :)

I use Solidworks. I've been using it for several years so I can usually model things up very quickly. I spent about a day doing the modeling/rendering for the image above. I do a little touchup in photoshop to put in all the decals and such.

As far as making parts, thats what I do for a living- I'm a consumer product designer (think ipod accessories/medical devices/computer cases etc.) My brothers and I have our own company making moco stuff, we should have our product ready in a couple months.

Funny that you mentioned making parts for space ships, I used to work at Lockheed designing satellites.
Looking at the design of the Red stuff you'd think that Jim worked there too. :)

Very cool design ideas. My girlfriend just came in and caught me staring out it. She asked me what I was looking at and looked to see if it was porn. I told it is better then porn she gave the your a geek look and walked out

just came back into town.. saw this post and freaked out, incredible stuff Curt.. your definately allowing us to visualize our systems as they just may be down the road.

CVB,

The view finder connector is stock in my ear.

Yeah, well thats easily remedied :) I was reading the specs for the camera and trying to figure out where all the connectors were going to go. Looking at the camera it doesn't look like theres enough room for all the connectors they are going to need. Should be interesting to see what they come up with.

I did a quick mock up with an add-on module on the under side... Gives a little more room for buttons by placing the connectors underneath. Another advantage it that its easier to upgrade than having the connectors in the body.

Another thing thats hard to see with the images on the red site is the scale of this thing... I made a beer-powered RED to let those of you who weren't at NAB see how small it really is.

CVB Very nice work! Keeps getting better and better. You seem to be a forward thinker. Red would do well to give you work! Keep it up as I enjoy it...

curt.. nice work. Like how your adding handles where they actually would be usefull, like on the beer keg red.

Brilliant.

Love the bottom cable bolt on as well, even though it screws with the cage a little, probally would be the best place for cables to be that low. Love your seperation of the "client side" HDMI outs as well, so the video tech only has one side and one port to deal with.

Thanks for the comments JT and Jarred. This forum is just awesome... I appreciate all the positive feedback and suggestions. The ultimate gratification would be to see some of these ideas in the final product. (with the exception of the six pack version, the beer cans block the view of the LCD screen)
