Zoom lense reservation

What about using something like the Zeiss ZF Nikon-mount lenses? There was a discussion over in one of the HVX/DVX Hardware sections asking about them and that reminded me of them. There's supposed to be new ones announced at Photokina on the 26th and since Zeiss is a good Cinema lens maker, I figured I'd keep an eye on them. Granted you could get a lot more bang for the buck with used Nikon Nikkor lenses, I know because I've got a 50mm 1.4 (that's what it says on the box anyway) lying around here that I used on my failed DIY 35mm adapter and it worked pretty nicely regardless (although I did break the [I think] aperature switch somehow when I tried to manually clean it, but since I'd ideally shoot wide open anyway it doesn't matter too much).

It sounds like we all might be fighting eachother to nab up good Nikkor lenses up so I thought it would be interesting to ask about these alternatives.

if you want a good Nikkor AI-S Manual Focus set I'll sell you mine for $3,500

24mm f/2
28mm f/2
35mm f/1.4
50mm f/1.2
85mm f/1.4
105mm f/1.8
135mm f/2.8

to quote Fanta (the carbonated beverage) "Don'tcha wanna?"

Okay, the zoom is aiming for under $10,000.

Could be $9,999. Could be $6,000.

What price would it need to be for buyers to scrap their still lens plans?

Let's talk the price we'd like and consider reasonable for a mass produced lens. Red are listening... You never know...

For me, under $6k is a no brainer, I'll add it to the shopping cart. $8k? I'll think about it. $10k? Stills for now and hire cine lenses for projects.

Considering that the Zoom won't be out until some time after the Red's release I'm going to hold off on the purchase because of the excitement of just wanting to go out and film once the camera hits my door step. I think around the $7,000 or below mark is what I'll be willing to go for.

Depends on the quality... but I doubt I could scrounge more than $5k for it. Gotta eat y'know.

It will be great if the zoom lens can come out in time for the later reservations among the Red 300s...

I would really hope to acquire only the zoom lens to do most of my work, and it will be good if I can save the rental fee for lenses and put them into acquiring the red zoom lens instead of having to rent lenses for the first couple of months when Red zoom arrives...

Food? I guess it's important.

Thanks for the input, guys. There are saving's in mass production. If Red believes that most of their camera buyers will be interested in their zoom, it may knock the price down. Certainly there will be a lot more interest than in the 300mm prime, due to its limited applications.

If they price the zoom right, they will sell heaps. But what is the right price?

$10K is a great price if the Red Zoom is equivalent in quality to a Cooke S4/i zoom.

However, if I need cine glass, I can rent in the interim. I plan to use my SLR lenses at the beginning just for my own testing purposes.
