Zoom lense reservation

I hope that they´ll post the information, pricing and reservation link online first.
Otherwise I´ll be "#855deliveryinaugust2009" in the reservation cue because of all those pesky ibc-people are in front of me.

Wouldn't it make sense if the reservations placed for the cameras were given first refusal on the accessories/lenses? So Mr Blonde for instance would be #194 so that the camera and lenses/accessories would arrive at the same time as his Red One? That is of course unless the accessories are released at a later date.

For many though I can imagine they will want to get Red Lenses for their Red cameras and if they don't have any other cine lenses the only option would then be to use still lenses until their reservation for the lense was complete... seems a bit backward though if someone with Red reservation #2023 could reserve #1 for a lense and vice versa - neither person would receive a complete Red package until late on lol.

Jims said that the zoom lens won't be coming out at the same time as the RED camera.

To shoot 4k, this would be the ideal option. He should just allow us to reserve one right now..to gauge demand =)

Did get this from the story... "Schilowitz also announced that the original $17,500 price is holding firm, good news for the 25 or so RED advance reservation holders sprinkled among the press."

I figure its a reporters misqoute... because I thought if you had a camera on hold the price was suppose to be held there as well...

That's long been suspected - many stating it as fact - but I don't recall any official statement from Red confirming it.

I'd also like to say that's a pretty sweet range for the zoom. Wider and longer is always nicer, but I'm not the one who has to make it.

Given 4K is suddenly a shooting possiblity for everyone, a serious lens is a must.

I think 10 gs is right on. This essentially will be the cheapest way to get an all around zoom for cine 4k shooting..unless someone knows of a similar super 35mm zoom for under 10 grand?

True that..for now my still nikon lens will be my best friend.

though this concerns me:
"There is no question that inexpensive great quality glass is available from the still photography marketplace. Nikon, Canon and others made fine manual focus/aperture lenses that will work on RED and deliver excellect images. BUT. You need to be aware that the focusing range (degrees of turn from close to infinity) is pretty short on most of these lenses. Given that one of the most difficult parts of being a "pro" with a large sensor is pulling focus, this needs to be called to attention. It can be done, but it is much easier with cine-style lenses. That's why they make 'em. I don't want anyone to be disappointed that they got caught by surprise with this fact while they were saving so much money."

buuut. Jarred mentioned a brilliant idea about "One solution for this though is to use a Follow Focus with increased gearing ratio, so when you turn the follow focus knob the gear on the lens rotates at a smaller rate. This of course will require a focus gear ring on the lens, which is an easy add on."

so there may be hope. besides... people are currently using still lenses with the adapters like M2 with pretty damn good results.

Yeah, we are using a set of Nikons on a Mini35 / XLH1 and together with a Redrock Follow Focus and this setup works quite nicely. So I will be using them for the RED as well until the RED zoom is available.

Estimated at a hefty $10k price tag, could someone explain to me what the quality difference would be between this Red Zoom Lens and a set of Still Camera Nikon Primes? and why the price difference is worth it?

Actually, in the presentation at IBC, when Ted Schilowitz introduced the RED 18-85mm Wide Zoom he stated that the target price was "under ten thousand dollars" not "ten thousand dollars". How far under, or if it will end up under, will remain to be seen.

You can find the answers to your lens questions in the massive lens thread on this forum, but in general, here's some input on your RED Wide Zoom, versus Nikon photo primes question:

RED says that the RED wide zoom will be engineered with cinema-grade glass elements. It will be pretty fast for a zoom at f2.8. For productions where you need rapid focal lengths and prime lens changes are not feasible, the RED wide zoom should be a real good tool. Even though its a zoom, if it's engineered with cine-grade components, it may have a better overall image at each focal length than the Nikon photo primes at their respective focal lengths. If its engineered for cine use, it should be more rugged and precise than the photo primes. My feeling is that I would choose the RED wide zoom over a set of Nikon photo primes for the usual kind of shooting I do. Don't get me wrong, I have the deepest respect for Nikon lenses. One of my photo cameras is a Nikon and I love Nikon lenses. I will use an occasional Nikon photo prime for specialty projects where it makes sense, probably with an inexpensive, gearless follow focus unit for shoulder mount and sticks work, and in a custom waterproof housing for watersports shooting.

Thanks for the clarification Gibby. Under 10 grand, not necessarily 10Gs as such...

This will be a popular accessory for the Red (what's a camera without a lens?), and I really hope they can deliver here price wise.

Could scrap my still lens plans...
