ZOOM H1/H4n Sescom Cable clarification help please.

Looks like they finally priced the juicelink ds214 @ 144.00. I believe I will get this for my run an gun and use the H1 for HQ audio for VIP projects where sound is more important.

That seems good price. But do you really want a preamp/mixer without XLR input and phantom power?

I'd get VMP if I plan to carry it without any preamp device. If I plan to carry a preamp device, why limit to VMP?

VMP might bite me down the road. e.g. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?228831-Sennheiser-G3-with-Rode-VideoMic-HISS

AT875R has a real XLR output. It can be self-powered with battery. XLR to line-input adapter might work for a simple setup without any preamp.

Disabling AGC.... I wouldn't worry about it with GH2.

H1 for VIP? What?

$144 seems like the right number. Props to juicedLink for that!

stonebat - if this is your only audio investment and you want better quality, going for a pro XLR shotgun and the necessary equipment to support it is a wise move. However, the DS214 still makes a lot of sense for people in other situations.

One of the reasons I ordered a GH2 is that it's physically smaller than other DSLRs. I recently bought a Rode VideoMic Pro for the same reason. The DS214 appears to be rather compact as well, which is appealing.

For someone like me, who bought a small camera and a small mic, having a little box that kills AGC and gives me headphone output is nice. It's an affordable problem solver. If I had the DS214, I could even run a Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N cable out of its headphone output into a portable recorder. This way I could create a second high resolution copy of the audio, and use the headphone output on the recorder to monitor.

It makes one hell of a formidable gun and gun documentary kit that could fit in fanny pack.

I'm not saying DS214 is a bad option. I'm going through the same decision process and am sharing my view.

Although VMP is small, it seems little more hassle to use it on a boom pole. I don't plan to buy a boom pole... but who knows down the road? Then some other forum argued about the practical purpose of VMP. It's really for run-n-gun style. Usually on-camera. It's 6" mic. AT875R is 7" mic. Adding a separate shockmount adds little more bulk. Just another option to think about. VMP & DS214 combo is definitely viable solution or run-n-gun ENG style.

No need for the Sescom attenuation cable. DS214 can add 40 db attenuation on line-in input.

as of now I'm just assembling a run and gun setup and a setup i could use for shorts. when I start doing more, instead of going with a preamp with xlr, I will do all audio seperately since I will most likely have an audio guy with a boom. that setup looks like it will be a H4n + RODE ntg2.

Right now I just don't need XLR inputs because I'm not really doing anything 'pro' ya know.

Frankly I don't know what you want... but I just wanted to share what I found. Good luck and have fun with your setup.

Those cables are for connecting from line level to mic level. GH has mic level input jack. The attenuation cables help lower the signal as the line level signal is usually high.

If a preamp/mixer can control the ouput level, there is no need for the attenuation cable.
