Zacuto Shootout Part 3?

The website says, that they will issue it during the last week of May.
Well, should come soon.

When they're done reshooting all the GH1 and Nikon footage with handycams and the Canon footage with the F35.

No, this is too simple.

I think delay can be caused by rendering Canon footage on Hollywoon rendering farms from scratch using technology used in Avatar.
You know, modelling, lightling placement and high resolution rendering (remember - they must add moire and aliasing simulation!).
But it'll look really stunning, I promise.

Wow, this thread took a turn to sarcastic in a hurry!! LOL! Well, while were at it. Did anyone else get the feeling that instead of showing that HDSLR footage is "as good as film", the real result was to show just how shi**y film looks, projected digitally. I would like to have seen the film projected from a photo-optical prepared print compared to the HDSLR footage projected digitally.

Wow! So glad they had that little section on the importance of converting to ProRes! "It doesn't help to have a modern camera without a modern workflow." Hopefully this will help put the debate to rest...you need to transcode your H.264 footage! Sheesh.

Uh oh... what if I don't and I use CS5 or Edius which can both (altho Edius is still king of RT here) edit the native files just fine? Am I in trouble then?
=)

j/k btw..

Funny, the DSLRs all get blasted on resolution, but the GH1 was the sharpest of them and no one said anything about it. (Of course it didn't look very good at 357%, aliasing and whatnot).

Nice to see the colors on the 7D, and that they can get a decent key with these cameras if need be, although I guess we kind of knew that, already.

Main problem is that these guys are good, but almost no one understands real reasons why they got this results.
Comparing full-res RAW to line-skipped JPEG is kind of dumb.
Pairs must be line-skipped RAW to line-skipped JPEG and full-res JPEG to full-res RAW.
Same goes to resolution. 357%??? Guys, use 300%.

Part of the problem with that darn first resolution test is that it's also a dynamic range test! The Gh1 was looking very sharp compared to the others (although also very jaggy...but how can we tell what's web compression and what's not...is there any reason at all that they didn't post full resolution stills of these crops or even full 1080 stills...I mean...come on guys) but you couldn't see the fans because of the dynamic range....not because of the resolution, they were just blown out on the GH1 vs the 5D.

Compared to the other DSLRs it held up best in the res test. The film scans at 4k looked outstandingly good in comparison. Why did the girl look completely soft on the colour test with the flowers on the GH1, or was that just me?

I thought The Last 3 minutes was a beautiful film, was that shot on the 5D? Not only did it look great, but it was a really emotional ride ..amazing.

I also thought the girl looked very soft on the color test with the flowers on the GH1. It really stood out.

Have to say I got the overall feeling that the Nikon and the Panny were kind of thrown in there just to keep the whole piece from being completely Canon centric. On the whole, it came across as film compared to the Canons. Half expected to see "sponsored by Canon" in the credits.

I'm not making any judgement as to whether the perceived slant toward Canon is good or bad...I think it reflects more upon the superior job Canon is doing in promoting and supporting their DSLRs than on any intended or conscious bias on Zacuto's part. Any bias they may have has most likely gradually developed over time as a result of their keen interest in DSLRs and constant exposure to the company who shares that interest on an equal level. Think the same might be said of Philip Bloom.

I don't think it's a stretch to say Zacuto comes across, at least at some level, as feeling Canon is the acknowledged standard by which all DSLRs should be judged. It shows in this piece.

I have questions: Did Zacuto publish the settings used for each camera? Were the same settings used consistently throughout the entire 3 episodes of tests? Why is the GH1 framed differently compared to the other cams? I thought the GH1 VF is supposed to display 100%?

For me the Zacuto tests/comparisons are useful in showing us that in scenes with actors & props (as opposed to test charts), DSLRs can kinda sorta hold their own against motion picture film.

However, I kept thinking throughout watching all of them: God, I'd give anything if these tests had been done by someone like Adam Wilt instead of Zacuto.

I'm not saying Adam has a bigger brain than Robert Primes, ASC, etc., but rather that Adam is usually much, much better about telling us what we really need to know, nuts, bolts, ohms, watts, warts & all.

Oh, and I think Zacuto's pro-Canon bias is pretty blatant. Not subtle at all. Although it would be nice if Panasonic made some effort to recognize the reality of & promote the GH1's capabilities as a pro tool, they don't. However, that's no excuse for Zacuto and others to ignore that reality. But it's Zacuto's "store" and website, so they obviously can do & promote whatever they want. I'm OK with that, but it's one of many reasons I'm disinclined to buy anything from them.

I think that's mainly because the Canons are dominating the market. I've yet to hear of a shoot around here using a DSLR that isn't using a 5D or 7D. I get some funny looks when I say that I ordered a GH1.

The blurry girl was a bit odd, you're right that really stood out.

Panasonic broadcast is certainly pushing the professional application argument with the AF100. Still, I'd like to see them include the highest possible codec option available to them. I'm torn between 7d and GH1, but the live monitoring issue probably represents the break-over for me to the 7d. Which is unfortunate, because I think the GH1 looks better.

The only thing I kept thinking during those last few lines of commentary on the potential of RAW was...RED. Eh, haven't we seen that future?
