FS5: Zacuto - Odyssey 7Q+ Compatibility Issues?

This is not a joke. I have sold my FS700+Odyssey7Q but i still have tons of stuff lying around in my shelves that i had to buy to make that frankenrig work for me. In the end, the camera and setup was so large and fragile, that it hindered my work. When the FS7 came into my home, it felt like i had discovered jesus (no joke). It really lifted a burden off my shoulders (pun intended).

But i still have tons of junk lying around reminding me of that dumb camera purchase :P

I've grown to hate those kind of setups. I know with some systems you're going to need a recorder for the RAW or the monitor for the village over your shoulder or this and that, but they are just so not fun.

This is one example of an EVA1 I recently saw at Cinema5D (and it of course doesn't apply only to this camera but any of them), you have pieces and wires sticking out in every direction. I've seen all kinds of crazy Hollywood setups (much more advanced than the one below) and many people like to build up their rigs just because...but it's truly the worst kind of shooting for me to have so much stuff hanging off your camera.

Yeah, that is truly a mess and I can't work with a contraption like that. One of these days a manufacturer will realize what we need is a super35mm sensor in a shoulder-mount Z450/F800/Betacam style body, with a good OLED viewfinder, v-mount battery plate, and a wireless microphone slot -- at an FS7 price. That camera would rule the market and sweep the market. My F55 with the ENG dock comes the closest I've seen, but it's still not what I really want and is too expensive for most people to justify.

Arri Amira.

As Donny said, it's not 4K, so that's a deal breaker right there. Plus no slot for 2-channel wireless mic receiver and I'd rather record XAVC-I than ProRes. My ideal camera is basically a smaller Z450 with a super-35mm sensor and e-mount.

I've been saying the same thing for years, Doug. To sales reps at major vendors and even directly to manufacturers standing in their booths at NAB. But apparently no one cares or they just don't think they will sale. My "dream" camera would be my P2 VariCam with large (global) sensor, large neutral/universal mount(a la FZ), 10 stops of ND or variable ND, OLED VF with flip-away diopter, and a few tweaks here and there. To take from everyone's favorite still photographer blogger, Ken Rockwell, to describe a good ENG camera, it just gets out of your way and lets you shoot.

I've shot many times with the Amira, and it's a nice camera , but it is not what we're talking about. Taking the picture out of the equation, if you gave someone an Amira and a good ENG camera and let them spend just a little time with each, no one would take the Amira over the ENG camera. There's a reason that the design is almost universal among all manufacturers, even down to 'same switch' placement and has changed so little in the last 20-30+ years.

Yes, those are on my wish list as well. It's interesting to note that our dream camera has no new features that aren't already on other cameras -- we just want them all incorporated onto one single camera. How hard is that? I'll be talking to the Sony engineers extensively about this topic while I'm working for Sony at NAB next week. They made some changes (mostly adding S-LOG) to Z450 last year after I lobbied hard for it at NAB. Also, they brought Alister Chapman and me to Japan after the EX1 launched so we could give them feedback, and a lot those changes came out on the EX1R, so they do listen to customer feedback.

Here's my dream camera that I'm going to lobby for. I'm calling it the PXW-Z550. So what am I missing?
I think they'd sell a ton of these. BTW, there is no sense in asking for really high frame rates, RAW, and other exotic stuff because then you won't get anything at all. I want to keep the list pared down to just the essentials that we actually need day in and day out. There's a really good chance a camera like this could come about someday soon.

PXW-Z550 Dream Camera Wish List:

Shoulder-mount body style (similar to F450, F800, X500, etc.)
Super35mm 4K sensor (global preferred)
Locking E-mount
Rossette for mounting a short, sturdy, arm (not like the FS7 arm) that has a REC trigger built-in.
Electronic Variable ND
4K UHD up to 59.94p and up to 120 fps S&Q Motion for HD recording
XAVC-I, XAVC-L, and MPEG HD422 codecs
S-LOG2 and S-LOG3 via true CINE EI mode
Native SxS slots with XQD compatibility using an adapter
Simultaneous Recording to both cards
Fast Hybrid Auto-Focus and SteadyShot when using compatible lenses
MI-Shoe on handle
Slot for 2-channel Sony wireless microphone receiver
12G SDI video output
HDMI output
(4) Audio channel recording
(2) 3-pin XLR input at rear - AES/EBU: AES3 compliant
(1) 5-pin XLR for shotgun
(1) XLR-type 4-pin power input
V-mount battery connector
D-tap output connector
Power consumption should be under 30W
Three choices for EVF: 1)HDVF-EL30, 2)HDVF-EL20, or 3) FS7-style LCD with diopter.

Priced under $15K for body -- plus your choice of EVF.

Features that are not needed ( especially if it reduces overall cost of camera):

All wireless connectivity, QoS, live streaming, and remote control
Ethernet connector
GPS
Pool-feed input recording
HLG

Doug - I could get in line for that camera as well. Would like to add dual ISO (aka Venice & Varicam) of say, 1000 & 5000 to your list. And I'd be fine with XQD slots instead of SxS (but then I've never owned those cards).
Oh - and a nice trade-in program for current Sony owners of other models.

Progress is being made on my Z550 dream camera. Cannot say more yet, but the right people are taking it seriously.
BTW, the camera needs to have SxS slots so that it is compatible with F55, Z450, Z280, etc. However, high-end XQD cards in an adapter will be an alternative for people who don't want to use SxS. But if XQD is the native type of card, a lot of people would be pissed. Including me.

I'm with Doug. SxS is the way to go in a camera like that. You could use the native cards and/or(probably) use XQD's in adapters like in the F55/5.
