Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Letus, Oh My

Lucky Duck
Here are some grabs from my recent trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, all shot with the Letus FE. I have posted a lot of shots here so that I can demonstrate the resolving power of the Letus. I am using the VIVIDRGB setting in these shots with color gain at 0 and sharpness at 0. I applied a warmth to the pictures by using the incremental white balance control on the camera.

Lenses used were Nikons; 28mm, 50mm and 100mm.

My zoom setting moved for some of the shots so there is a little vignetting in some of these stills but for the most part it wasn't a problem.

Unfortunately, these stills are way softer than the original. There doesn't seem to be reliable way of preserving the full sharpness of the raw files. Anyway, enjoy.

Course, my favorite is the 6th image in the 2nd group. That bison is looking over at his buddy saying "Watch this" right before he launches that touran into orbit. :)

Even if his car is behind him, that bison will beat him to it every time if he wanted to.

One of these days I want to put together a film of all the touran clips I've captured out in Yellowstone over the years.

Awesome stuff as always! I was just cutting some Yellowstone footage myself this past week. I love that park, it's my favorite haunt.

That reminds me of my recently deceased uncle Jerry. Back in the 70's his family took a trip through the smokey mountains. Everyone was stopped along the road feeding and checking out one of the local roadside bears. My uncle tossed a raw steak behind this one dude......... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Thanks for the stills. Just this weekend I've been going through about six tapes we shot on a PD150 and 575WSL DVCam in the park and at Jackson Hole about five years ago.

Alas, even "little PD" made Yellowstone look amazing. Wish I'd known about DVX100 back then.

Not that it would help much if he did get in the car... My father was driving through Glacier National Park about 8 years ago, waiting for some bison to cross the road, minding his own business and staying in the car like you're supposed to... and one of them came over and rammed his door. :) He drove all the way back from Montana having to climb out the passenger side... :D Made a couple of impressive holes, that's for sure.

Great looking grabs. :)

Great images!

Was this filter applied on the 35mm lenses or to a mattebox?

Thanks!

Giovanni

directly on the lens. For the kind of shooting I do, a mattebox is mostly not practical because it is too cumbersome and takes to long to set up.

Thanks for the comments and great anecdotes!

Lots of chromatic aberration, especially on the fence close-up shot. Red on one side green on the other. A1 issue or Letus?

I disagree with your assessment. You say "lots of chromatic abberation" but it is only in some shots and only where there is high contrast. Dennis at CineVate has done extensive testing with his Brevis unit and believes this kind of issue is a Canon lens issue, not what's being used with the adapter. I tend to agree with him because I do occasionally have problems with CA using the regular lens.

Was at the area (Tetons/YellowStone/Jackson Hole) last summer. It was very beautiful, love to live there, but dont think the job market is as vibrant.

Here is some footage as an example of the sharpness and resolution of the picture using the Letus with a 28mm Nikon in the first two shots and a 100mm Nikon in the last shot. This is as it was shot, there is no color correction or effects.

I have included two versions here. Obviously, the 1080 version is going to be the closest to the original:
