GH4 Yagh!

So I have the YAGH...I have mixed feelings about it.

It's a necessary piece of kit when a client requires XLR audio inputs. I have also used the SDI out to an Atomos for a client that wanted me to deliver 1080 ProRes. I haven't used it to record 4k uncompressed yet, but I may buy an Atomos Shogun when it drops (not sure if that is optimized for 4K from YAGH though). It was also nice to be able to power it from AC power from a stinger on a long, locked off shot.

Cons would be the weird, bulky ergonomics, the fact that it needs external power, and the fact that the LCD wont spin more than like 25 degrees when its attached.

If you need XLR audio, than you will probably want to get it, as I don't know of any other solutions. But if you just want it for the SDI, than the black magic HDMI to SDI mini-converter is only $280 on BH.

I'm sure there are some HDMI or SDI to XLR audio disembedders or something long those lines out there, but I have never looked.

Personally for audio I find the DR-60 mounts better in my shoulder setup than the YAGH. Problem with the YAGH is that I have to choose to use all my current accessories OR use the YAGH. The Tascam gives me all the function I would desire the YAGH for anyway and I get dual sound rec.

For the right price I'd pick one up but like Jaimie said above it would have to be $500 ish.

I never understood the pricing rationale that they used. You can't make the add on accessory more expensive than the camera itself....and make it butt ugly...and make it difficult to use handheld etc... and then expect people to gleefully hand over 2K for the brick. $500-$600 bucks and it would have sold like hotcakes.

SDI and XLR are pro connections. Anything with HD-SDI is always super expensive, let alone 4 of those on the Yagh.

Plus the fact it needs external power and must be removed to allow users to change the battery on the GH4!! Its like there was 2 different design teams working on the GH4 and YAGH who didn't communicate with each other until the day of release!

They should have just released a grip that enhanced ergonomics like regular grips do. It should just have two xlr, two battery trays and a single sdi out (just acting as a hdmi>sdi converter). Price should be no more than $600. A lot of people would buy one.

You can't have something that costs so much have so many downsides...

Going by Philip Blooms review.

So I went back to his review and had to watch that section several times to understand the point he was trying to make. I think what he was saying is that if you want the YAGH to remain on the camera at ALL times, but not use it's functionality (not power it on) then yes, you will have to take it off when the internal battery is depleted. However, I'm not sure I'd want it on the camera if I wasn't using it, so to me his comment seems a bit of a canard.

As ever YMMV.

Coming from a design background this is functionally very poor, though as you said perhaps the YAGH is only designed to be used on the odd occasion. I can only image being on a days shoot and having to remove the YAGH just to change the battery would soon get very annoying.

In defence of this box I 'see it'

1) you are a production company with a pile of SDi monitors

2) you have a pile of Vlocks and Dtap to XLR power leads

3) you want a small 4k camera to jam into tight spots like car interiors

4) your time is money you dont want to be dinking with off brand batts etc.

5) you evaluate the GH4+box as being a lot cheaper/smaller/lighter than a Red or other short form 4k cam (exept the normal chip sized BMC4k)

It works for this sector (apart from the competition from the BMC4k!)
