XH A1 and SD

I'm considering buying the XH A1, but as of yet do not have the requisite hardware for the HD back end; I've got a non-Intel Mac, no Blu Ray burner, no HD NTSC monitor, fast drives, etc. All this will come in the next year-18 months, but I want to start shooting now and buying a SD camera seems counter intuitive at this point. Once my workstation is upgraded, I can work in full blown HD.

So, for the time being, my question is this: What is the basic workflow with the XH A1 to get SD?
Do you record on HD and transfer to SD when you capture to FC? If so, is this easily done?

Or do you actually set the CAMERA to record in SD?

I thought I read that you can record on HD and somewhere in the workflow 'step down' the footage to SD. That way you can always go back and have the original in HD.

Thanks.

You heard right. You can record in HDV and then switch it to down covert (in the menu) when you bring the footage in to FCP. This essentially brings the footage in SD and keeps the HDV footage on the tape for later use.

Yeah, you can do both. You can either set the camera to RECORD in SD, or, as Pete says, you can record in HD, output in SD.

That's excellent news. Knowing I can make this transition makes me confident about stepping up to a HD camera.

Can you tell me if this SD/HD flexibility exists with other cameras in this class/price range?

Thanks again.
