x1.4 / x2.0 extender

I'm thinking of adding a x.14 or x2.0 canon extender to a 70-200 L f4. I was considering a Canon 100-400 zoom but portability is always an issue because I work in the field alone most of the time and that lens is big. I like the 70-200 L f4 because it is very sharp throughout the range (sharper and faster than the 100-400 under 200mm from the tests I've seen) and an extender wouldn't add that much weight to my traveling kit.
I've seen all the comparisons on The Digital Picture but looking for some feedback from some hands on experience.
I'm not worried about the speed because it will be used for HD at 1\50 in daylight and always on a heavy tripod. Just concerned about sharpness and contrast.

The 1.4x Mark II TC would be the one to use. I've gone thru quite a few 1.4x's and 2x's from Canon, Sigma, Tamron and Vivitar.

It's my goto TC for my EF 300/4L IS, and the AF speed and sharpness is very good.

I've used various 2x's with my 120-300/2.8, 70-200/2.8 and even the 50-500. Softness is noticeable on the f2.8 lenses, but still very useable. On the 50-500, it's just too soft but then again, shooting something a mile away presents lots of other issues.
