Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Yes, I'm afraid it's time to part ways. Ever since you started getting noticed I feel as if we just don't see things on the same page anymore. :'(

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I'm still waiting on that Jared.  ;)

Man enough to get a shnazzy title other than "Senior Member?" ;D

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I still haven't seen it :(

I want to see the original before (insert famous director here) steals it... :)

John- love the PulpFiction line...

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Ouch! And the ref takes a point away. I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but I think my friend Steven has done some pretty original work mister. And if you would like to continue this convo outside, I'll be there. (Film Discussion)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I love that whole sequence from Pulp Fiction. In fact, it's probally my favorite 'scene' in the film. Travolta and Stolz running around all manic.

Ooohh! A Spielberg conversation! I'll be there whoever starts it. I have some solid takes on Steve.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

WOW, i totally didn't mean that, I made Spielberg out to be Puff Daddy...

what I meant was that this kid did something great, and that soon I would see someone bigger doing it...

I went back and editted it...heh

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

enough yappin already! some1 post frames or the video, i still havent been able to see it and its frustrating to read all this and have no idea what it actually looks like

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

...but by a 17 year old with a 3000$ camera. All the more reason to keep waiting to see it, Joe. It's great.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Well, yeah... what I meant was, I don't care if it was by a 45-year-old with a 35mm rig or a 17-year-old with a DVX, the thing looked absolutely first class and professional. It absolutely stands on its own.

If you then find out that it was a teenager with a DVX, that's where it enters the mind-blowing category!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I hadn't planned on replying to this thread but I got sucked in...

Nicely done, for sure. Hardly mind blowing. It looks like a really bad music video you would see on MTV (thats still a compliment).

Excellent use of the camera's potential and the editing is impressive. Creativity wise it is lacking quite a bit.

Don't misunderstand me, it's quality work. I just can't believe some of the things you guys are saying about it. Is it because he's 17 and you all have doting parent syndrome?

Am I jaded because I'm not surprised that a 17 year old can do this? From what I've read he's been doing this twice as long as I have.

I've run into people the same age whose talents impressed me more (Colin Minihan age 18 shot this mv on a VX2000 http://www.smiley-films.com/drist-normalcy.mov ). I haven't seen any other of Matt's projects so that could change.

Ok, reality check people. Make a list in your head of mind blowing music videos that you have seen on MTV. How about mind blowing independent films. Now watch this video again and compare.

And finally, the people who mentioned that the music has everything to do with it are right. It is, after all, a music video. If I got Tom Hanks to play the lead in my short film...well, you get the idea. Basically he got Alanis to sing a hit song in his video (whether she knows it or not). That makes a HUGE difference.

So please take it down a notch people.

Matt M - Awesome work man. This will definitely be a good calling card for you. I would love to see what you could do with a good short film script. Do you have any shorts online? Mastering the technical aspects of copying Hollywood moves is the first big step, I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of creative cinematography you have brewing in your head. I'm at the same point I think...almost...I have some creative moves I'd like to try but just waiting for the right vehicle. Best of luck to you and keep us posted on any new projects.

p.s. I've got one friend I can trust to give me an honest reality based opinion of my work. That friend is valuable motivation for me to improve myself. Because of your age you'll get a lot of "encouraging" compliments (fluff), but make sure you have a brutally honest friend close by to give you constructive criticism, keep you grounded, and striving to be new and inventive.

Edit: ok...two if you count John. :P

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Once again, (and again)... the props to Matt are on the look and feel of the piece. The cinematography and post are first class. People keep bashing it on the fact it's not an original music track. Duh. Consider it a needledrop track. See past it and look at the quality of work that is capable of this camera when in the right hands. We should all be inspired to get out there and top it... not break it's legs out from underneath it just because of the few whiners who haven't ponied up and shown any of THEIR work...

It's not "lacking in creativity" on any level. Just because a piece has a somewhat similar look and feel as other media out there (which happens to be one of the most popular styles today), doesn't mean it's "not creative". Shoot, most spots out there on the tube look alike now-a-days. They're also all associated with professional, high-quality work. I do agree with ExFilms that I'm excited/anxious to see how Matt would handle a treatment of a short film script. I think he could really prove his validity as a strong player in the field with a good narrative on his reel as well...

But as always, this is all IMHO 8)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

ex films, that vx2000 video was pretty good. is the director from san diego as well?

im not so sure i agree about your comparison of it to matt's work. i dont think they are even in the same league.

i agree with a lot of you, that it would be interesting to see a narrative piece by matt, but some of you make it sound like he is an "incomplete" artist unless he has a short film for you guys to view.

as far as music videos go, i cant begin to see where anyone would say it lacked creativity. if you are all speaking only about his video for Uninvited, i can see where maybe you werent blown away by the content. but if you guys saw his clips for Bring Me To Life... those clips are freakin AMAZING. there is a narrative story behind it. there is an incredible use of excellent lighting. the camera movement, the post prod work, everything.

look at it from a technical point of view. this kid is showing what he has done so far. he has raised the bar for DVX filmmaking. i dont think anyone can dispute that. i have no doubt if you give him an underground band with an original song, he is STILL gonna "wow" us.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Yes, I have seen the LIFe video and it is very cool and conceptual and in the same league as his other work. kids got it, man.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Not sure where Colin is from. Wasn't comparing him to Matt, just an example of a filmmaker about the same age whose video impressed me more than the Uninvited video.

And I say again, I thought Matts video was great...but not mind blowing, 35mm, worthy of MTV, sell our cameras and give up, etc. I haven't seen any of Matts other work. I am only commenting on the video that this thread was based on.

Now you've really taken it too far, do you really think the uninvited video has "raised the bar for DVX filmmaking". I give up...my point is lost. I knew I shouldn't have said anything.

Matt, again...great work, looking forward to seeing more.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

no. i dont think the Uninvited video did. i DO think the Bring Me To Life video did though. i guess you havent seen it. after he gets his site back up, id like to hear your thoughts on it. i didnt really think this thread was based on the Uninvited video only. it thought it was regarding ALL his work in general.

i thought Uninvited was a VERY solid piece. but the Bring Me To Life stuff was the work that AMAZED me. i guess theres no real point for debate until we have all seen the same stuff though.
