wow! how was this done

What exactly are you wanting to know?
It looks like it was shot in a studio - with some compositing done for the ultra wide shots.
But other than those ultra wides, I don't see anything too crazy in this - unless I'm missing something.

i find how the girls appear from behind to be very amazing....how was that acheived?plus if you look in between his legs you cant see where they come from

Ahhh... it's too early, it was done so smoothly I didn't even notice. Now I see what you're saying.
Definitely compositing - as to the 'how,' I'm not sure. Maybe shooting the girls coming from one side first, then the other side - and combining it in post via keying and roto?
With a solid backdrop like that it definitely becomes easier.

Pretty nice effect though - it was seamless.

hehe its 6pm in this part of the world!i want to recreate the same thing for a music video..was thinking its green screen but roto must b involved like u say!

if you look around 1:04 at the shot of all the different girls coming out from behind him you can see that the edgeon some of their hair is not perfect. I'm going to say the shot the girls on a green screen seperately and put them in after the fact. Also, when they all run behind him and disappear you can see a bit of a wipe on the last girl on the right.

Look at 0:43. You see the girls and their shadows to his left and right, but their shadows and his end at his inner legs. Also notice you never see shadows hit the back wall.

So ... the red floor was there, of course. And he and the dancers were all there together at the same time with a green backdrop. Then the only tricky part would be rotoscoping or masking out everything between his legs (insert penis joke here.)

I wish I could do this when I was a stage magician. :/

Oh, this reminds me of the good ol' days. :)

I would think it was done with the magic of editing. One girl hides behind him in the MCU she comes out. CUT. Another girl hides behind him, move to MS. She comes out. CUT. sort of thing.

I can't seem to find them anymore but there used to be a behind the scenes for this video on youtube and from what I remember everything was shot in that red room

What music video are we talking about? I can't see this youtube video in my country and would like to search for it somewhere else.

It's actually really easy to hide the girls behind the main artist using clever camera angles, except for the gap between his legs. Have you seen the video for Feist's "1234"? All done in a single shot, and the people are able to appear and disappear behind her with simple camera angles. Check out the "making of" video. It's a pretty impressive production.

It's obvious that they've painted the red cyc back in between his legs, and didn't do a great job of it because there is a shadow that runs along the convergence of the floor and the wall that is not consistent where they've replaced it. I suspect, though, that it was minimal compositing with in-camera effects.
