Alien 3 not enough credit here wicked awesome.
aliens everyone likes it.
Alien dark as ****!

Ghostbusters is most definite not Science Fiction

IMDB nor AFI includes in their SCIFI categories. It's like saying RAIDERS is comedy because of some funny scenes.

Funny scenes aren't the premise of Raiders. Using made-up technology to catch ghosts IS the premise of Ghostbusters.

On first blush, I wouldn't consider Ghostbusters sci-fi, but as I reconsider I think that like Galaxy Quest and Back to the Future it fits the bill as both comedy and sci-fi. It's actually listed on IMDb as: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi.

I don't think of it as sci-fi FIRST, but I think you'll find it difficult to come up with a definition of "sci-fi" for which you can't make an argument it fits.

I thought Spanglish was science-fiction, as the only explanation I could think of for why Adam Sandler's character would pick Tea Leoni's horrible cheating shrew over Paz Vega was if he was in fact from another planet.

Gonna have to go with this little gem.

Director's Cut is almost here. It's been a long wait.

EDIT: Hold the phone, it was released two days ago. Guess I've got a quick errand to run.

Stop what?

Stop trying to convince everyone GB is Science Fiction. :) :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Just because it has science and technology, does not make it science fiction. Ghostbusters is straight up comedy. Nothing more, nothing less.

It has ghosts and monsters; does this make it horror ? No it does not. I'd go so close as to put it on a sort of cusp, but classifying it as Science Fiction ? Can't go there.

Sorry. I believe you can. A lot of sci-fi magazines would agree with me, too.

Like I said, give me a definition of sci-fi that it doesn't fit, and then we'll talk.

Many definitions

A literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background.

And no, golf is not a sport.

Calling GB SciFI feels almost politically correct, doesn't it ? As if not to hurt anyones feelings cover all the bases kind of way.

Another def ?

science fiction, a popular modern branch of prose fiction that explores the probable consequences of some improbable or impossible transformation of the basic conditions of human (or intelligent non‐human) existence. This transformation need not be brought about by a technological invention, but may involve some mutation of known biological or physical reality, e.g. time travel, extraterrestrial invasion, ecological catastrophe. Science fiction is a form of literary fantasy or romance that often draws upon earlier kinds of utopian and apocalyptic writing. The term itself was first given general currency by Hugo Gernsback, editor of the American magazine Amazing Stories from 1926 onwards, and it is usually abbreviated to SF (the alternative form ‘sci‐fi’ is frowned upon by devotees); before this, such works were called ‘scientific romances’ by H. G. Wells and others. Several early precedents have been claimed for the genre—notably Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818)—but true modern science fiction begins with Jules Verne's Voyage au centre de la terre (1864) and H. G. Wells's The Time Machine (1895). Once uniformly dismissed as pulp trash, SF gained greater respect during the 1950s, as writers like Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, and Arthur C. Clarke expanded its range. SF has also had an important influence on postmodernist fiction by writers not devoted to this genre alone: Thomas Pynchon, Kurt Vonnegut, Doris Lessing, and Italo Calvino are significant examples.

Speculative scientific developments? Improbable or impossible transformations? Apocalyptic? Mutation of known physical reality?

Are you reading the same thing as I am? How do those not apply to Ghostbusters? And it's not just some tangential throwaway element -- it's the whole premise of the film.

Heck, then I guess Blade Runner is just a cop movie, and Aliens just a war movie. :)

funny how everyone is picking the same movies.. but i'll be no different.

i've always DIS-liked sci-fi, but I LOVE Alien. that movie is wicked pisser.

This is another golf conversation !

Respectfully disagreeing no matter which definition is found.

Ghostbusters is nothing but comedy. I'll allow it for Cuff Purposes. But fringe. Way on the fringe.

Even AFI lists the film in TOP Comedy's and no where on the SCIFI AFI list can it be found. Not even in the nominations.

I think the Science Fiction in such an afterthought in the film. Like the horror (ooh Ghosts and monsters) is. A different approach to that film and you have a horror film.

A different approach to it once again ? You still aren't going to have Science Fiction

In fact

I think we have to stop holding onto definitions and Wiki so much (I've been guilty of it)

Not everything is black and white. We have to look in the areas of grey (of which not everyone is capable of doing).

It's pretty simple:

Does it feel like a science fiction movie ? Does it taste like one ?

I don't think so.

You take the science fiction out of the film, and you don't have a film. At least nothing recognizable as the same film.

You think you can? Work it. And then I'll use the exact same method to show any sci-fi movie you want to name isn't really sci-fi. 'Coz you can take the aliens out of Aliens a hell of a lot easier.
