T2i Would you consider this low-light banding & noise normal?

This illustrates my point about using the ISO you need, but then having so much light at that ISO that you nearly need an ND.

Though if you were to use the ND would this become counter-intuitive? As the scene would then require a greater amount illumination for correct exposure, bringing back the noise you attempted to eliminate by increasing the light in the first place?

Is it possible to get a contrasty exposure without having to resort to post. Or is the 550D simply unable to?

That's why I said "nearly". The idea is to use all the dynamic range available, AND to make sure you've got adequate light.

Yes, about 7 stops worth. Most people wouldn't consider that very contrasty, but that's all we've got. The rest has to be done in post. And it is for this VERY reason that people who are determined to get "the look in the camera" will always have noisy footage. The cameras and the codecs are simply not up to the task. People are careful with this stuff on FILM. And here people are trying to get their look in camera with the cheapest tools available. Something got to give.

Get the image in the camera between 15 IRE and 95, and take care of the contrast in post, and your footage will be clean and crisp.
