FS7: Would You Buy A Panasonic AU-EVA1?

Nirv; What a change from when I got started said:
Yea man, welcome to the internet! 40 years ago I was one of hand full of guitar makers in this country. Now everybody and there mother make guitars. There is a huge industry centered around teaching and specialized wood dealers. The challenge is keeping oneself relevant in this day and age, and one way I found was making videos! That was my solution.

The music industry also has suffered as CD sales plummet, and most musicians make fantastic CD's in their garage...... Apple doesn't call it "Garageband" for nothing. Pro-Tools has put many a studio out of business, a nasty little fact most audio engineers don't like to discuss. I can make a better sounding CD in my living room than I hear in most sound studios, and for next to nothing.

Hard to name any industry that hasn't suffered at the hands of the internet..... but, that can be a good thing for people as well who can take advantage of it at the same time.

Nirv, glad to see you waking up, but didnt this all start back in 2010 with the release of the 5D2?

But if / when all the old farts die out.. there will be only kiddos who cant shoot anything but auto ,on a monopod with a stills camera.. are they going to be the dp, s of Breaking Bad.. Mad men.. Bird man.. Arrival..Blade Runner..Kes.. etc.. no they aint .. and all we will have left is crap on you tube.. I would think its a duty of any working DP to be worried about that grim future..

Yea, you should be worried. You have a skill most anyone can develop within a short amount of time. Maybe take a few online courses on how to work Canons auto-focus, and focus assist, things are changing and your eye-sight getting worse the older that you get! Now you old timers face even more challenges as you try and hold your rig steady and focus on birds in 8K...... ha ha!

Well thats my point too.. !! its not that hard to pull focus !.. there is skill for some shots..that is learnt over time/practice.. and "knowing " the lens it can become second nature.. unless telepathy makes great strides there is just no way that AF will ever take the place of the operator /directer who ever actually deciding where the focus will be.. or moved between.. a machine will never be able to do this.. just as a machine can never decide the aperture.. they can only work between parameters .. which yes can be set to some extent .. maybe some day ok yes there will be AI of such level that the whole job can be down by a robot/droidy thing.. but AF and AE dont think.. they dont have artistic interpretation .. to shoot your kids saturday football why not.. but at any other level being employed as the Dp/ Cam op.. there is no use for it.. except gimbal or some such.. if i were a dir/producer and paid a decent day rate for a DP.. who turned up and used IS,AF,AE... would not sort of wonder their proficiency !.. would stay in a dentists chair if he /she got out an iPad and started googling "how to fill cavity"..

You mentioning aperture, focus, beginners, amateurs, old farts and old timers, remind me of the old dictum....... In the house of a hanged man, one never mentions the word rope.

Its not just pulling focus though is it.. sorry but I dont share your optimism .. its part of the dumbing down.. already content ..next is the skill sets.. and pay will also follow.. well already has.. its a Fox/intern shot/ crap content future that being played into..

After a long sleep, Donny123 wakes up to the realization we are being dumbed down and manipulated by the very monster he helped create! Didnt someone make a movie about this already?

Clearly face detection / object recognition is the future...

I'm looking forward to the day where I can do a quick 360 shoot of a person and the camera learns that person from all angles, then store the person with a name... then just tell the camera to "focus on Mike... rack from Mike to Ben" and it does...
Or have a focus puller with an iPad app marking the objects/face/person to be in focus and with a slider racking from one object to another only having to care about the speed of the focus... knowing that slider full in one direction is in focus even if the object/camera has moved...

HD at 10bit 422 around 400mbps puts you in a good place, image-wise.

For a one-size-fits-all investment for folks looking to step up from DSLRs without needing to upgrade their support gear, this seems pretty good. I think the FS-5 also does that spec, just not sure how many mbps.

If the price is right, I can see it catching a good market.

I understand both of your points because I have served in both old and new schools. But the key to us old schoolers was the use of parafocal lenses. It gave you certain amount of relief. Now with the big sensors and especially with 4k, I have been burnt with focus being off just a little. Sure AF can burn you in a quick run/gun situation with a lot of people in your frame, but it is tool for some situations. But I do love the art of pulling my focus. It feels organic, like the camera is part of my hand. There are some things I will not yield to (yet!), like having a bunch of crap hanging off my camera. Again, I think back to my old sony with the u-metic deck, I feel grateful for not only the marvel of technology, but for learning the basics of the "old school" ways.

In the end it's very simple:
On the one side you have people who bought a camera and a variety of still glass who swear by a certain combination of IS and AF combined with face-tracking smart touch screens and future firmware upgrades. They are on the brink just a software upgrade and new lens version way from bliss.
And on the other side the people who invested in cine glass and balanced cameras.

EVA1 is EF mount. That is how this camera will be delivered in the Fall.

An EVA1 with M43 mount would mean that almost all native M43 lenses would not cover the sensor. Yes there are adaptors for other lenses but the native lenses would not work.

??...so I presume this is simply Panasonic saying we don't want to do a M4/3 mount, and not, if you have M4/3rds native lenses, as well as legacy glass, we as a company are worried, that you as our client investing in M4/3 would not understand, that you can't use our native glass with the EVA...because I know exactly no one, who can't get why s16 lenses won't cover their m4/3 sensors

All you guys that want a m4/3 mount, let it go. You're beating a dead horse. It's not happening. As I said already, I'd venture to sat that for every ONE person complaining about not getting m4/3, there are at least 100 applauding EF/s35.

You are right!...that was my last kick..

I miss the old days when I had the first camera I ever bought the XH-A1. A nice zoom and AF. What a shock when I got the 5D3 and had to do it myself.

Donny, I'm sure you know but if not...you can use a touch screen with auto-focus and literally touch faces as you please.

So it's either rotating a knob or touching a screen.

You might wonder about speed. A human's decision whether to pull slow or fast is one-of-a-kind, but the electronic system also provides us speed control for smooth transitions at variable speeds.

Yes Ive mentioned touch screen way back.. there is no way you can work in most situations .. let alone fly on the wall .. tapping a screen.. do you have 3 hands for a start.. :).. its great for what it is.. but not really a pro user feature.. for many obvious reasons ..
