FS7: Would You Buy A Panasonic AU-EVA1?

I understand both of your points because I have served in both old and new schools. But the key to us old schoolers was the use of parafocal lenses. It gave you certain amount of relief. Now with the big sensors and especially with 4k, I have been burnt with focus being off just a little. Sure AF can burn you in a quick run/gun situation with a lot of people in your frame, but it is tool for some situations. But I do love the art of pulling my focus. It feels organic, like the camera is part of my hand. There are some things I will not yield to (yet!), like having a bunch of crap hanging off my camera. Again, I think back to my old sony with the u-metic deck, I feel grateful for not only the marvel of technology, but for learning the basics of the "old school" ways.

Ditch the stills zooms.. get a par focal one.. :).. they should have been banned by law from moving image production... runs for cover :)

Enough of this silliness. I have a major shoot coming up June 20th, for 5 days and will need some advice. I will start a new thread soon.

Good luck to the old farts, evolution is a *****!

haha well said.. you dont look that young though man.. in fact you might be older than me :)... I guess I should just spend an afternoon learning how to make guitars .. just need some software on my iPad .. wire and some plywood right .. :).. then we will be equally as talented in our work..

1. Most still zooms are parfocal.
2. without still zooms we'll still need $100-200 per lens per day to shoot. There would be no GH5s, FS5s, EVA1s...
All you could get would be HD F35s with accs that break your back in an hr...;-)

1... Most stills zooms are par focal ..??? its the opposite is it not.. I dont think any are unless you get a lucky one.. and for good reason.. they dont need to be and it costs alot to make them so.. what you been smoking man..

2 Yes that would be alot better.. :).. easy rig and tripod.. dont work 12 hr days.. seriously though these days not really the case e.g. the new and excellent Fujinon cine zooms.. Sigma Zooms.. the Zeiss .. these lenses are not heavy and are relatively cheap..

Donny, I'm sure you know but if not...you can use a touch screen with auto-focus and literally touch faces as you please.

So it's either rotating a knob or touching a screen.

You might wonder about speed. A human's decision whether to pull slow or fast is one-of-a-kind, but the electronic system also provides us speed control for smooth transitions at variable speeds.

Yes Ive mentioned touch screen way back.. there is no way you can work in most situations .. let alone fly on the wall .. tapping a screen.. do you have 3 hands for a start.. :).. its great for what it is.. but not really a pro user feature.. for many obvious reasons ..

You know what your problem is, and why you are receiving so much flack? You throw around the word 'pro' too much, when in fact you are only talking about one small aspect of professional videography.

You go right ahead and spend a day and learn to make a guitar, that says more about you than it goes me. I've been shooting video for 11 years, and guess what you moron I can use a freaking follow focus as well as you can. Now it's time for you to shut up!

Don
You are completely correct that there is no way I have seen where using a touchscreen handheld is ergonomically viable.
It is amazing that no manufacturer sees this basic error.

Using a gimbal or on a crane or whatever AF is really the only way to operate solo without an ac and remote focus.

I find the c200 very appealing for these situations. Also telephoto walk ins af cannot really be matched.

In stills af became de facto in the mid 90s but even today I know which shots require manual.

The quote in post #126 is a mixture of two comments from two people. (Just wanted to make note of that.)

Yes, I can make it work in every single situation at all times.

EVERYONE WORKS DIFFERENTLY.

Tried to delete that post but apparently I cant, so I did a new one minus your quote. The way Donny writes his posts leaves something to be desired. looks like I screwed it up even more, don't know where your quote ends and his begins. Thanks Donny for your organizational skills!

It's still not correct, haha, but it's okay...my original post followed by his response:

The beautiful art of manual focusing should never, ever go away, but on only the most talented productions in the world will you see the best human focus pulling.

And I'm sorry to say that on everything else, you won't...and auto-focus will be more than good enough and even the better option to use.

Everyone works differently.

Both are professional.

Michael,

You have stepped over a line there. Play nicely please.

Yes time to warp this discussion .. I seem to have struck a nerve.. and your not doing yourself any favors now Michael..

??...so I presume this is simply Panasonic saying we don't want to do a M4/3 mount, and not, if you have M4/3rds native lenses, as well as legacy glass, we as a company are worried, that you as our client investing in M4/3 would not understand, that you can't use our native glass with the EVA...because I know exactly no one, who can't get why s16 lenses won't cover their m4/3 sensors

There are many clients who pay not attention to camera sensors and their sizes. You mention Super-16; there is a vast swath of consumer & prosumer clients who have no idea what that even is. Not everyone has the experience of you and the people you know.

I work for Panasonic. I do not know every detail of every decision in our process. What I am doing is reporting a statement of fact. The EVA1 will ship in the Fall with an EF lens mount. That's it.

EF mount is the right call, no question about it. Panasonic are going to sell bucket loafs of these. I look forward to road testing one later in the year.

I understand...And though I'm dissapointed, I also understand Panasonic has to commercially viable...I'm happy to be part of a forum where someone with your experience is involved in the production...so though not for me, if Panny succeeds, that's good for all of us...Rereading my post, it appeared snarky...this was not directed at you!...not often a consumer gets to have a conversation with a corporation like Panasonic!
