Worth getting DVX?

I'm thinking of getting a camera. More specifically I've been looking at the DVX100B and the Sony Fx1. I'm just wondering if it is worth getting a DVX now, because I know it has been out for quite a while. Do you think it would be better to get an Fx1 rather than getting a DVX? Or is the DVX the way to go?

Thanks for all the help.

The DVX100 has officially entered the "Classic" status. It's an amazing camera. What you have to determine is the future of your video production needs? Are you going to need HD soon? If so, maybe the AG-HVX200 is the way to go because it has the DV tape deck AND P2.

I don't want to confuse things though so to answer your question, I would go with the AG-DVX100B, by far.

Hey thanks for the quick answer, maybe in a few years I'll be able to afford the HVX, with the cost of P2 cards its a bit over my budget. Most of my videos, will be web based and I have seen alot of footage from both, and the DVX footage always looks very pixelated, while the Fx1 tends to have crisp HD quality. I really like the DVX colors, but I'm worried if I get it that I will have very pixelated videos.

I've said it a million times, but it's late and I need to finish this vodka, so here's my two cents again. The DVX is such a wonderful camera. Rent a couple movies- "Incident At Loch Ness" and "Iraq In Fragments". Both shot on the DVX. And both uprezzed to HD and projected on 35mm film. The quality of this camera is outstanding.

And since everybody is jumping on the HD cameras, you can find a DVX100B with low hours at a good price with money left over for a tripod and UV filter. Because your new camera will need a tripod and a UV filter. This is important. Your new camera will need a tripod and a UV filter!

As far as compressing videos for the web, the DVX footage can look great. I use the free MPEGStreamclip program: http://www.squared5.com/ It gives fantastic results. I don't know what was used to compress these two videos for the web, but they're both shot on the trusty ol' DVX and look damn fine:

Edit: If you're not focusing on narrative work or interview type situations you could skip the tripod. But for the love of god and all that is good get an inexpensive UV filter to protect that lens!

whoa...that vimeo video you linked to is soooo screwed up. no comment.

DVX all the way man.
it seems like I've never heard anyone say "the DVX sucks" so I'm sure you wont be disapointed too.

since the gh1 is coming out and more dslr is going to take over this market, I'm sure you'll find a used DVX under $1k in no time so you can wait just a little more if you want:)

I have shot a film on the Red, I own a HVX and I still love the DVX. Here is a video I just shot a couple of weeks ago with the DVX it won a contest for best video.
I wanted to shoot something run and gun and edit easily so I used my DVX. It is still a fantastic camera. FInd a good used one, or wait and see the results from the GH 1. (which I have ordered 1)

I went from an xh-a1 to a DVX and regretted nothing. I recently had to sell my dvx for rent...I know, it was sad. I am currently saving up to get another DVX or a new Nikon if they improve their video mode as I am in the market for a new camera body as well. I as well have achieved amazing results with the dvx. I have a few uprezzed videos on Vimeo, which I am too lazy to link to, because like semila I have some beers to attend to. Long story short, the dvx kicks ass and will for a long time to come.

Watching stuff like this helped me make up my mind on the DVX, the FX1 is an interlaced only camera, (no 24p) and it cost about the same new, I knew what the DVX was capable of and when I bought it, I really didn't give a stuff about the extra resolution that HD can offer. RESOLUTION IS NOT THE BE ALL END ALL.

Resolution isn't making this image look totally sick!
BY THE DVX!

totally agree.
I never care about resolution.
HD is just too sharp and unreal. it is more then a human eye can see in real life.
Now, why would you want to see anything more then you see in real life?

Thanks, for all the responses I think I'm sold. Shaun that car video was just amazing. Now all there is left to do is buy one. I think I'm gonna get it off B&H in a few weeks, now it's just down to finances haha.

Take a look on the HMC-150. It shoots HD as well as SD. This is the "real" spiritual sucessor to the dvx.

umm. no.

lets not make the argument that the dvx is better because it shoots lower resolution because that argument is just completely ridiculously wrong. To appreciate it more you might want to start watching more movies on blu-ray, and then if it is still your serious contention that dvd quality looks better or more 'real' than blu-ray than fine (im rolling my eyes btw). The DVX is a great camera though, with unusually standard features, a great filmlike look and like everyone else I highly recommend it. You wont be dissapointed, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
