Woods in Winter

beautiful, cinamatic poetry.

im confused though, how can you have the foreground in focus/background outa focus, then pull background into focus while foreground goes outa focus, without an adapter?

Its called a simple rack focus which can even be done on a cheap $300 handycam.

Steven, this piece is pretty special mate. Looks like you've really mastered the art of rack's and pulls with your DVX, great control. You also manage to get an awesome shallow DoF,,,,,, who needs a 35mm adaptor.
Cheers, Shaun

Yeah sweet, those shots really look cool.
When you are doing a rack, do you do it by eye or do you get the Z numbers and focus while looking at the numbers change? Remembering the numbers between the 2 focal points?

Anal!

Anal!

Steve I feel really anal asking this but can you share your complete workflow of this look. Including what computer and software you used, 24p type etc, I really love the look and am probably not alone in that and would love to get the same look, and after all imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! James

shaun - i usually just go by eye and if i can't tell i try to remember the numbers. i usually go hand held so going by eye is a lot harder

jamesmallonuk - im not sure what workflow actually means, but i just shot at 24pa (f6) but changed all the number values to 0 except for master ped which was -5 or something similar. i edit with a dell xps m170 laptop, 2gb ram, 256 nvidia card and my footage stays on external drives. i edit with vegas because it is simple and effecient and it works well on my laptop. i used premiere for the past 5 years before this one, and it started to act up while printing to tape so i switched to vegas and havent thought about using anything else. i usually just throw the shots i like the most down on the timeline, mess with the curves to make it more vibrant looking, then mess with the colors if needed, then mess with magic bullet and then export as a quicktime h.264 with a constant br of 350 or 400 at 360x240 res or a little larger. when i just shoot random stuff its mainly just to get practice with editing and making footage look nice. i hope that covers work flow and helps you out

foreverbmx - that would be a good switch. bmx looks real cool at 24p, i posted a video right before this one called bmx, snow & high shutter if you want to check it out

thanks for the feedback guys
