EVA1: Wooden Camera to offer PL mount modification kit for EVA1

There are already plenty of PL-EF adapters. I’ve had mine for a year so I can attach my SLR Magic APO Cine Hyperprimes to any of my EF-mount cameras. I’ve been using it with a Metabones EF-E adapter on a Sony A7s Mark II this week on a short film and the Metabones shifts on the E mount whenever I rack focus. That shift is precisely why you don’t want an adapter unless it positive-locks...which the standard native EF mount does not on EVA1. If a third party were to make one, that’d be cool. Regardless, if you want to use PL mount lenses on EVA1, as I do, you will want to seriously consider the PL mod kit.

ok gotcha. so the PL Mod doesnt completely void the warranty except in the ef mount?
is this policy US only?

That's the US policy I can tell you about because that's the part of the company I'm connected to. But we communicate with each other and try to match out as best we can.

Sorry if this has been talked about...It seems there is a Japanese company making a EF-PL mount adapter without doing modifications...

That adapter works with maybe a dozen PL lenses, and doesn't work with 100s more. Most PL lenses extend into the camera cavity, and they will physically hit the EF mount's electrical pin block. So that won't work. This adapter is really only useful for the smallest handful of lenses, while the Wooden Camera modification will work with almost all of them.

Quick note to piggy back on The Wooden Camera PL mount install - We are a friendly local Panasonic reseller in Dallas right down the street from Wooden Camera. If you buy the camera and PL mount from us we can facilitate its install and ship it out ready to go!

From Wooden Camera:

“While the vast majority of lenses are compatible, due to the ND filter turret on the EVA1, lenses with a rear protrusion longer than 33.5mm, measured from the PL flange, are not compatible.”

There are very few PL lenses that protrude that far. Off the top of my head I can think of a couple of Angenieux zooms that might have a problem and possibly some hyper-wide fisheye, like a converted Nikon 8mm. Not sure with any of those but real it is few and far between.

The 8mm nikkor is a retrofocal SLR design. It clears the mirror. The Zeiss standard primes are pretty deep....

I seem to remember one of the Red Pro Primes jutted out pretty far and caused a problem mounted on anything but a Red One. Never used it so I couldn’t say. But, like WC says: the “vast majority” of PL lenses should work.

You might be thinking of the RED 18-80, which had a rather fat housing directly in front of the PL mount. On some non-RED cameras it could interfere with PL mount "ears" (the levers on the nut ring of some PL mounts), camera viewfinders or other mechanical parts. I remember removing these bits of housing for some owners as it was just cosmetic and did not expose anything of issue in the lens.

That must be it. It certainly sounds right. Thanks, Mitch. Otherwise, I heard those Red lenses were just fine.

Angenieux Zoom Lenses on EVA PL mount

Well this is exciting (and unexpected), Wooden Camera are working on a PL mount modification kit for the EVA1.

All my glass is PL, so I'd written off the EVA1 as option. Looks like I can start considering it again :)

Does anyone know how "solid" this mount conversion from WC is? I have Angenieux Optimo Style lenses and the native EF bayonet flexes just slightly when I have the lenses in EF mode and thus needs support. I'm really hoping this conversion has similar strength to a true locking mount so I could forgo support (especially for gimbal use).

It's a solid replacement mount and it is a standard screw-down nut Positive Lock PL mount. The installation video should answer your questions.

And that does not void the warranty? Wait till the Japan HQ sees this....
Mitch What was that about the EF mount being 1 piece with the chassis? I think neutral mounting system is totally doable. I'll look into it this year I promise.

"Japan HQ" knows all about it. We are all over this and nothing about it is a surprise to us. I am in direct communication with both our factory in Japan and with Wooden Camera. We all know exactly what's going on.

Here again is the warranty position by Panasonic US (I can only speak for the US as that is where I am employed, but I believe the rest of the world is in agreement):

As long as the installation of the PL mount has nothing to do with an issue on the camera, that issue will be fixed under warranty (provided of course it is a warranty repair item in the first place). If the PL mount in any way causes some form of damage, Panasonic US will repair the damage but the costs will not be covered under warranty.

I don't think there could be anything more fair and reasonable.

Jacek, if you would like to discuss a mount solution offline I am happy to do so. More options for clients is a great thing.
