Wimbledon 2008 Thread

Ivanovic was a surprise. The rest went pretty well as expected, though, I thought.

Safin -- three in a row. Hasn't happened in a while.

Women's draw -- could be a Williams final.

This is the first W in a long, long time that was perfectly on schedule at this point. Monday might actually be the round of 16.
 
Getting back at tennis...Well, not really and a bit off topic, but what do you guys say of "that" watch commercial with Federer in it? yes, the one with "that" tune that's used also on the yatch race (also selling "those" watches)...

I find the use of the Wimbledon footage+music+ Federer scream and "falling with joy"footage at the end fantastic.

Safin's having a great run. It'll end on Friday, but he sure has been reminding people of what he could have been if had been able to keep his head.
 
Safin is a stud; he has the tools to beat Federer. He has the tools to beat anyone in the world. But can he keep it together ?

I'd love to see Safin win the whole thing; if not Rafa.
 
Nadal gave up exactly the same number of service points (10), against the #11 player in the world. Ancic is #43.

You do know you're at the buffet loading up your plate with heaps of words you may have to eat, right? :)
 
No, I said he "might not" make seven. (He still has to make six.) I did say he won't make eight, so maybe I've ordered some crow myself on that, but it's not a heap, and I think I'm right. :) Heck, your own timeline for him (winning the next six majors then retirement) contemplates that.

But if Federer doesn't give Nadal the beating that Nadal gave him in Paris, then I'll be passing you the salt. :)
 
Look at what I said. I said I think I this may be Nadal's year, but either way it goes, it'll be a competitive match. You're predicting a bloodletting with Nadal on the ground crying. :)

I never ever said it was the end of Federer's career. I did say it could be the beginning of Nadal's time.

Borg retired at 25 because he liked being #1 and didn't fancy touring as #2. Now, I think Borg is far more vain than Federer (though all the blazers and cardigans and gold trim and tuxedo pant shorts might belie that a little), but still -- the temptation will HAVE to be there for him. He's done things no one else has done. He doesn't have anything to prove. He's got all the money he could want. Why not retire on top instead of playing second fiddle?

Because somebody like himself came along and topped borgs record. So why just top it slightly, if you could top it big time?
 
Well, he's only tied it so far. And if he loses this year, everything starts again at one -- it will take him six consecutive Wimbledons to break it, starting next year.

Remember, my statement above contemplates Nadal winning this year, and then taking over the #1 spot later.
 
I'm agreeing with David on this one.

Nadal is poised to rise; his age, his experience, his history with Fed ? All point to this development.

I hope RAFA crushes Fed in the final.
 
Williams sisters in the final. Will probably skip. Don't care which one wins.

Tomorrow, the only interesting match will be Federer/Safin -- but only if Safin the two-time Grand Slam champ shows up. If the other guy does, it'll be done in an hour.

This will be a great match. Once in a while an excelent player that has "disappeared" comes back in Wimbledon with a vengeance- Ivanisevic, Becker, etc...

This is going to be "the match" of the tournament.

Of course, before the main event, the Summer blockbuster "Federer vs Nadal in Wimbledon II"... :)

You keep confusing what I'm saying as being a Nadal fanboy, and I'm just not. I like him. I think he's going to get the big W this year. I'm calling what I see on the ground. But I'm not painting my face.


and b) well, yeah, it'll end with Nadal staring at three bagels and crying. And rolling on the grass with the towel over his head. And Federer kicking him while he's down. With cleats. Y'all got a problem with that? :)

Suppose he's already past that point? You don't seem to be acknowledging that possibility. Everyone has limits. He may have reached his.

I don't care how old he is. Borg was a year younger, just as dominant, just as "unbeatable." His end started when he was beaten at Wimbledon, after five straight titles, by a 22 year-old upstart who nearly beat him the year before. Hmmm.

At the start of 1981, would anyone -- anyone? -- have suggested that Borg might be retired by year's end?

Now, I'm not saying at ALL that Federer's headed for retirement this year. I'm just saying that ends, historically, have come very quickly, and that history is replete with unbeatable people who were shown the door. Of that, there is no dispute.
