Wimbledon 2008 Thread

The Big W is here.

Early impressions:

The press loves controversy, so of course they're all hyping Federer's weaker record this year. Brad Gilbert says it'll be a Nadal/Djokovic final. I think that's highly unlikely.

Ivanovic, fresh off the French, looks to be a new Steffi if she can keep it up.

That video scoreboard on Centre Court is preposterous. Wimbledon is supposed to be a bastion of tradition.

I find it hilarious how this thread has ZERO responses:nads: - while the other "sports" threads are out of control.

I'm with ya David, and love to watch... but unfortunately I'm not as informed as you. What usually happens is I'll be up to par on info about the players right as the whole thing ends:cheesy:

In order for it to happen, Djokovic would have to get past Federer in the semis, and I don't think he's ready for that yet.

Could be Nadal's year, but he'll have to beat Federer to do it.

I haven't watched Federer play much this year. Is he any worse than before with his "weaker record"?

His record is about what it was in 2003. But he's still #1, he's still the reigning champ, and few have a shot at him. "Weaker" for him is still a darn sight better than most are ever going to hope for.

Nadal is one who does have a shot. He's still on his upward curve; it is possible that Federer has crested his hill. The changing of the guard will happen at some point. This year? Dunno. Sometime over the next two, though.

Yeah, I think Federer/nadal final and I think Federer wins. If he is not that weak like in the last match against Nadal. He normally loses on clay against him, but that was just aweful.

If anyone has a good chance of beating Federer its Djokovic. Djokovic has improved significantly from a few years ago and already knows what it takes to beat "The Fed". One thing for sure, I would love to see this match if it happens. Could be a semi being more interesting than the finals. If it winds up as yet another Nadal/Federer final I don't see Nadal pulling it off.

I don't think so. Djokovic doesn't yet have the maturity to beat Federer on his best surface. His game is still a little too undisciplined.

Nadal, however, very nearly beat Federer in the final last year, and Fed wasn't slouching in the match. Nadal had the momentum; it was his match to lose -- and he did it by giving up two breaks in the fifth.

Nadal's got the game to win; it's a question of what's in his head. Does he have the mental game of a Wimbledon champion? That's the question this year. Remains to be seen.

I love tennis. I play all the time! But watching it could put me to sleep I think. I will do it occasionally but I would much rather get out there and do it muself. I might tune in to this however, I sometimes do.

Djokovic loses to Safin in straight sets. Ivanovic stays in by, literally, a millimeter or two on the net tape. And the day's not even half over yet.

I can't believe the Ivanovic match. I'm pretty sure I'm watching a rerun but I can see the outcome.

Interesting day. Upsets, near-upsets, scares. It gives you the palpable feeling that no one is safe, and by and large, that's a good thing.

Safin . . . such a shame in so many ways. When he's on, he can compete with anyone. But he's off more than he's on.

I'd love an underdog story here; I'd love Safin to go all the way. But you never know who's going to show up at match time. A lot like Goran that way.

Hewitt actually looked pretty good, better than he's been in a while.
