C300: Will the FS7 finally knock the C300 off it's perch? What will Canon's response be?!!

Agree with everyone here that Canon looks better out of the box. Just compare Laforet's Möbius C300 demo film to the new Sony FS7 demo. I love the specs but found it difficult to get excited about the look after I watched the video from the tea house.

I own C300 and I'm selling it...sooner than I wanted to because of how it'll depreciate now. However, it's still the best cam I've ever owned and I don't think that'll change anytime soon. It had everything I wanted for the most part. FS7 doesn't really do it for me. I had that C300 glued to my hand for 2 weeks shooting BTS and I can't think of a better cam to have. GREAT EVF, peaking controls, internal ND's, simple post workflow, solid handle, DSLR-ish grip, etc. A few things to dislike but whatever.

Doubt Canon will have a response super quick...other than price and 4K not sure that Canon will have much more to offer. They got a lot right with the C-series IMO...just a few things wrong that they'll probably fix now.

being the C300 seems near perfect for you as you state i have to ask what will you replace it with assuming you sold your C300 tomorrow?

thanks

I think you can't compare these two cameras because of their demo films. Mobius had much bigger budget for sure and it was really a short movie, with a plot and twist. If that isn't enough to give it the movie feel it was also shot like a movie. Tea House thing is just camera demo done by videographers. It is just video piece so to say. It's very rare that you see something good as a camera demo because many times they just build the shots or what little of story there is around showcasing the camera's various features instead of it's cinematic looks. I'm certain we will see many things in future that will look like real cinema. I'm sold, but not because of that video, but because it can give you pretty much what F5 can. Not that F5 looks like Alexa from the box but with good colour correction and post grain and such it will too have the proper cinema feeling.

The C100 demo film was uploaded and only available in 720p on Vimeo, with one of the main selling points of the C-series cameras being their increased 1080p sharpness over DSLRs at the time, so having only 720p available for viewing seemed ridiculous (along with the vacation video premise). At least the Sony demo film was uploaded at 1080p, though, in both cases, I have no idea why the camera companies don't make the original files available for download in order to see the best quality.

It is nice when a good launch film compliments a camera. Consider the GH3 launch film by Philip Bloom which didn't look like a huge budget, but had talent behind it to show the camera in a good light, was uploaded and displayed at 1080p, and is available for download on Vimeo.

Wasn't the C100 demo film "Bart" ? I thought that was pretty good. Of course these films usually use lenses that are hard to afford even as a rental, unless shooting with a healthy budget.

I was talking about Just C IT, which I believe was the first C100 video online. *Shudders* Their film-making content and style was reminiscent of GoPro, except GoPro's videos generally look better. I think the film-makers when hired by Canon got together with their friends and decided to turn it into a paid vacation rather than a camera demo. I can just see the look on the Canon executive producers' faces when they got the list of expenses to pay for--skiiing, single engine plane flight, parachuting, boating, diving, motorcycle and jeep rental, surf-boarding, flights--on top of paying the film-makers for the video.

I find it hard to get excited by a Sony camera these days. As at today regardless of grading and matching processes, Canon C series skin tones look the best to me. That could be different tomorrow. Always happy for something to be pleasing when Im not expecting it as well.

No point trying to prove me wrong, as its subjective opinion. Theres some shots in there where skin looks not so hot. Im not going to pick every one but opening MCU shot of girl poolside and MCU boy in water for a start - again subjective and if I actually had watched that with sound, I can't say that I wouldn't have enjoyed it and not cared anyway, I was too busy looking specifically at skin tone.

Jump to 8 mins on vid below (i promise you'll be thankful you did). I find nothing interesting here. In fact everything looks a little plasticy and lifeless to my eye. Again this is simply my opinion. Others may feel differently.

No use in arguing cameras—it's a very personal decision.

As it has been proven time and time again: a pretty sucky camera can look great when handled by a skilled operator and a great camera can turn into crap in clammy wannabe hands.

Also, generally, for back patting and feel good conversations, the dedicated camera forum will have more people "on the right side".

I think one needs to think why the C300 hit the mark if one is to consider if it can be 'knocked off it's perch'

-small solo op size
-fits everyones 5d2 lenses
-bbc 50mbs
-now very accepted

Will the FS7 destroy that?

Firstly most prodcos will think
'do I need to upgrade' (not really!)

Next will be post - currently the FS7 does not have an image that sings

(even 5d2 laforet vid sang to every proco every where 'I need this')
