C100: Will Canon offer a paid 4k upgrade to C100 MK2 once they release more 4k DSLRs?

A bit like the DAF upgrade for the Mk1. Their 4k DSLRs must be around the corner. Event people (for whom the C100 is aimed), may then opt for the cheaper 4k DSLR than a C100 unless Canon remove the 4k factor by making it a possibility on the MK2.

I think there is a strong likelihood of this happening later in the year / 2016. I see them allowing 24fps @ 4k / low bit rate. For the folks that want a more robust codec, higher bit rates / more fps you go c300. From there those that want raw/higher fps(120+) which the c500 could tackle(hopefully internally this time). I'm sure there will be more bells and whistles on the c300/500 options, but I do see 4k coming to the c100.

I and everyone else shooting with this camera would be beside themselves with excitement if Canon announced this sort of thing out of the blue. But they will not. No way. Canon is about excelling at the intended job, not trying to half-ass a million features. Magic Lantern has proved that even if the ability is there, it's not getting implemented. Honestly it makes sense, they got us to buy a 1080p cam, and when they offer a 4k cam, we'll buy that one as well. A free upgrade that canabalizes a guaranteed money making opportunity is simply bad business. If you're buying a camera based on the possibility of future unannounced upgrades, don't buy it in the first place. This isn't a grassroots camera company that promises the world...

Doubtful
Canon need to move quick... My first project is 2015 was 100% shot and delivered in 4K - I quoted 3 jobs in the past few weeks all with 4K as a requirement...
I have an A7s and a C100 OG.. I love the image from the C100, but I'm already having to rent other cams/recorders to do 4K....
If things continue that way I'll be selling the C100 for a new main camera... which currently would be the FS7. Couldn't see the 1DC as a main camera (audio, ND, etc)

I doubt it, if they would did it to any camera it would be the C300. I foresee the C100 remaining 1080p only.

There is a first time for everything :)

The c100 mk II had its processors upgraded so in the very least, its a possibility. The c300 is the oldest of all the cinema cameras and would be the least likely to see this upgrade. Also try to remember when they released their cinema line the sony f3 was king of the hill and canon dominated the market until the f5/55 changed the tide. How long did it take Sony to release their tech? 2 years! This is obviously the year of the refresh and if anything Canon has a solid reputation for producing some of the best technology in the industry.

In the end I guess none of us know what their plan is but they are hardly as conservative as folks have been making them seem.

I find it unlikely. Canon has shown a major trend of reluctance to cannibalize their high end cameras, at the detriment of purposefully hobbling their lower end ones. The c100, both mark i and ii, seem to be selling well as is.

Can the SD cards handle it? Can the HDMI output handle it?
There's more required than just the sensor and processor, though on a surface level they appear to be very capable of 4K.

The gh4 records to 4k via sd cards, and so do many other consumer model cameras(gopro, bmpc, sony handycam). They do so at bitrate levels well within the capability of SD U3 class cards. The hdmi would need to be upgraded but if you reference my entire post rather then just a small piece of it, you would have seen that I mentioned 4k being a possibility with low bit rates(thus negating an external option). Anything high bit/frame rate would be an up sell to a more expensive model. It technically wouldn't catabolize any of their newer models as they will likely have many more bells and whistles.

we all pretty much know that if Canon wanted to make the C100 mk I, II,, C300 record 4K they would be able to do it... a punch of hackers got 2.5k 14bit raw 444 from the 5D, so there's no limit to what Canon CAN do, in fact, I'd argue they can sample the entire 6K sensor on the 1DC and compress it enough to the CF cards. Will they do it? will they upgrade the C100 mk II to 4K? no.

it's marketing.

they'd rather make you sell the mk II, buy a new mk III than gather all the mk II cameras from owners and perform 500$ upgrades.

So a C100 MK 2 with no 4K, and C300 MK 2 with 4K leaves a $7k+ gap... surely the 4K entry level non-DSLR EOS Cinema camera is not going to be a $12k+ C300 MK 2?

Maybe there's something in the middle otherwise it doesn't make any sense to me? (assuming they almost certainly won't update the C100 MK 2 to 4K)

C200?

Ya, I think they'd rather push the price down on C100 MK II for a couple of more years and ease it out when the 1080P market disappears. It's at $5,500 right now ($6,000 with a 24/105 F4 lens) and I see a $500 price reduction every half a year or so, depending on competition. To wit, the original C100 is priced at $4,000, down 50% from its $8,000 September, 2012 launch date MSRP. 4K may be coming up big in the major economies but 1080P will still suffice most anywhere else.

The updated cinema line will likely be shown at the NAB in April, by which point, I would guess C100 MK II will be lowered to $5,000, C300 MK II 4K will be around $10,000 and C500 5K-6K (with the updated 1D C sensor, perhaps) will be around $20,000.

I'm thinking the C100 mkII will be the last of its model and will never see a 4k C100 and the C100 will be dropped after the C100mkII. i see canon making the C300 mkII (4K) priced down closer to the FS7 to seriously compete and the C500 dropping to around 15k + or - with more robust...everything loaded.

a canon 4k DSLR or sorts probably the 5DIV (?) priced around $$3,500-$4,000. this would take the place of a 4k C100...but...would not have the ergonomics or video benefits (ND filters, audio XLR etc) and great handling out of the box like the C series so Canon can get off charging less money and still finally have 4K thats in a bit more competitive area like the A7S.

i own a C100 and would have loved that the C100 mkII be 4k but right now with 4K on the horizon and really looming i don't think there will be too many takers for the C100 mkII unless you really have money to burn or you really need to do serious work where that particular form factor trumps most other stuff which is where i happen to be with my current C100. its a work dog. i feel that ill be shooting 1080 delivered for at least the next 12-18 months. i have an LX100 for playing in 4k for now. even if i got a real 4k camera now i still don't believe i would be delivering 4k anytime soon but 4k in a 1080 timeline sure is nice to edit with!

but what do i know. just fun speculation.

Funny, I see the opposite. I see the C100 mk ii getting a paid upgrade sometime down the road that enables it to shoot some form of 8bit low bitrate 4k and this will be their entry level 4k cinema camera(which would compete with the fs7). Or at the very least, a c200 with the above features.

The c300 mk ii I see having a full frame sensor with some type of 10bit broadcast approved codec, moderate high speed features and other bells and whistles that should trump the f5 for 12-14k. The c500 mk ii equipped with the same ff sensor should do all the fancy raw/high framerates and perhaps do more of it "in camera" to fill the 18-23k price point. The 1DC could get refreshed with more video features(different codec, 10 bit, 120fps, vector scope, waveforms, etc) and remain at the same 8k. The 5d mk IV would then come in around $4k, also being upgraded with more video features(waveforms, higher bit rate, 8bit 4k, 60fps, etc).

This is fun!

"Full Frame" sensors? I doubt that. 1) it's not really needed(I say this as owning 3 FF still cams) and 2) it would make a lot of their cine glass unusable on the new bodies with FF sensors. Only their cine primes cover a FF sensor. All of the cine zooms only cover s35.

And I do not see a paid upgrade to make the C100mkII 4K. Or a new 1DC.

Might one ask, what it is you do see? :)
