7D Why "two" files for video clips ??

George D.

Well-known member
I just got my new 7D and I've been checking it out for video. I noticed that when I download the video clips into the PC I get TWO files for each clip. One is a regular video file, but the neighboring one says: MVI_00##.THM, which is clear with no image, and if I click on it Windows, or any other program, CANNOT open it. What is THAT, and what does it mean?

Thanks.

.thm = Thumbnail

This is used only to preview your clips while you still have your card in your camera. So once you place the file son your computer you no longer need those .thm files and only the actual .mov ones

Thanks, that explains it. I wish though, that Canon did NOT allow the transfer of those files when downloading into a PC. It just makes it a hassle to delete them all, but I can live with it.

There is another concern:

It says in the Manual, Pg. 81; "Movie file names will start with "MVI_". The extension will be ".JPG for JPEG images. "CR2" for RAW images, and MOV for movies."

What "extension" ?? What's a CR2 ?? And, I have no MOV files. Why not?

It's a little confusing in the manual and does not spell it out very well at times.

Also, I do not like the fact that I cannot put in my own prefixes in the file numbering system. That is just one more area where Nikon is better.

Your thinking to much dude. Learn the camera, it takes time. If you don't like it, sell it... Simple as that.

If you feel Nikon is better go buy a Nikon then. Every company is different and I'm more than sure if your Nikon was so great you would have not bought a Canon in the first place........

So relax and learn the camera, complaining about simple things here makes no sense and is not needed. When you plug your card into a card reader you can organize the files and only import the ones you want. So in all actuality you do not need to import any of the .thm files.

George,

A better way is use the EOS utility that comes with the camera. It automates your work. You don't have to remove the card from your camera. Just plug the usb cable and the EOS utility opens up. It shows you the thumbnails of the videos and pics. Allows you to choose or select all and lets you choose a distination folder to download to.

In my opinion, using cam as "card reader" is faster than most cheapo card readers, also minimizes the potential for damaging the pins of the card.

The THM files also contain the EXIF data. I believe the Canon Final Cut import tool also extracts some of that from the THM files if you go that route.

An extension is the part of the file name after the dot. In a file called MVI_0123.MOV, MOV would be the extension.

A CR2 file is a camera raw file. On my Canon 10D they were CRW files, but CR2 seems to be an update to the file format.

I agree with the previous poster. Read the manual, learn the camera. If being able to name the prefixes of the file names is important to you, I'm afraid you might have the wrong camera for the job.

You must have your OS set to not display extensions. That's a computer issue, not a Canon issue.

"CR2" is the extension for RAW images. I'm not sure what other kind of explanation you're expecting for this.

Windows hides most file extensions by default. You can unhide them in the view options. Bing "hide file extensions" to find out how or just poke around.

Your lousy attitude is NOT appreciated.

I was only stating things I needed to know that I could NOT find in the manual. Asking for a little help is not a crime. If asking offends you, don't answer.:violin:

I got the 7D for video ONLY. Believe me, if it was just for stills, I'd have gotten a Nikon D3s. But, that is MY business.

I was only asking questions. When that becomes a crime, let me know.

Much thanks to everyone else. I am most grateful for the help....

Are they really the EXIF? They are at least thumbnails. And i do believe they are just used for the first frame to show on your camera when you scroll trough your movies (so it doesn't have to load the actual movie).

Rename such THM file to JPG, and you'll see it's just an image which - i believe - fits exactly on the cameras screen.

More like your childish rants are not appreciated. Also comments like this

Are not needed here, because with that statement you are implying that Nikon is better on many other fronts. Learn your camera, learn your computer and stop complaining just because you can't do what you can with a Nikon. I'm more than sure the community here can come up with many things these Canons can do that your Nikon can't. So go out there and shoot then come back here with a fresh mind.....

I agree with Cieloent on this one. While it is not a crime to be a newbie to a camera, complaining about it then saying how better another brand is just because you don't understand your own camera (and computer apparently) really is childish.

You are just asking to start a Nikon vs Canon flamewar and THAT is what's not appreciated.

So just ask your questions in a respectful manner instead of blaming the camera for the basic things you do not understand about it.

Cieloent,

I think you're going out of line. George just just got his camera. No need to add attitude in your posts.
I personally think his not starting a flame war with his observations on his new camera compared to a nikon.

He did appreciate your first response. He said "thank you". So no need to bash him in your next reply.

A little patience with others goes a long way. After all, you cant tell the tone of the written word.

Exactly, so how can you say I'm out of line?

It seems like you posted something and can't do the same yourself. I have no problem helping anyone, I actually like too. But as soon as he said "this is just one more reason why Nikon is better" means he just lost all respect. If he did not want that he should have never said it.

It's like someone buying something and complaining because it's different and complaining about it. That to me makes no sense. I'm done here as these things never end good. All I can say is learn your tools and ask for help without complaining.

"That is just one more area where Nikon is better." - this is what george said. I don't think this is a big deal or disrespectful to YOU.

And I say your out of line because George did not do anything disrespectful to YOU.

He did not offend you you. He thanked you for your response and then you replied in a not so nice way. I did not see anything in his posts attacking or disrespecting you.

I replied after you and focused on his problem.

No need for harmful remarks over a posters opinion on his camera.

Thank you Teddybear. At least there are a few of you out there that are polite, respectful, and a little understanding.

I meant no offense to ANYONE, or ANY camera manufacturer. I "have" read the manual through twice, and my custom PC and Adobe CS5 are new to me too. I was just asking a few simple questions. Good grief!!

As you said, there is no way to put inflections in the written word. Phraseology is difficult for everyone except maybe for an English teacher. I have been a professional DP for over 35 years, but just because shooting "video" with a "DSLR" is new to me, is no reason to be the brunt of bashing. Not meaning to blow my own horn, but I have probably forgotten more about cinematography than most people on this forum even know.

Any offense to ANYONE was purely unintentional, I assure you.

Enough said, and I will now remove any more emails coming to me from this post. So, anyone wanting to bash me further, save your time. I will NOT receive it.

OVER and OUT !!

I used to dislike the nasty comments by Cieloent, but I am getting used to it now. Every message board has it's own rules and etiquette. His comments have always had a little bite, but he seems to (mostly) know what he is talking about.

Apart from that, all the answers to the original poster are in this thread already and I can not add anything. Ok I lied I can add something. Avoid asking questions like this in public, this site is much better. You can't hear the snickers online.

Teddybear, it is very hard to indicate tone in text, but the initial phrasing of his questions followed up by comparisons of Nikon to Canon looked very much like a troll trying to get an off-topic argument started. And we all know how those can go on this board.

That was my only concern (and apparently not George D.'s intention).
