With builtin NDs, the camera manufacturer can perform corrections in-camera.
Software, as with Canon's Peripheral Illumination Correction.
Not that I've been looking out for it, but I haven't noticed it.i have a theory that when you use any filters above 7 stops, you will end up with color shift and sometimes IR pollution, have you experienced that with your C300 ii?
As we all know, assumption is the mother of all mishaps… but for my part I've always assumed that any serious manufacturer would seize the opportunity to match each separate filter stage to its sensor. I've always thought of it as an additional advantage for cameras that have internal NDs, apart from just the convenience/sealing.
Especially with cameras like Canon's newer models where we see up to 10 stop worth of ND. It wouldn't be possible without careful tuning. And like you say: it might not be possible to make perfect filters in hardware at the higher NDs, but at least the in-house solution is a known quantity and can be further adjusted in software.
